FACTS FOR CONSIDERATION.

Some Plain Statements Regarding

the Financial Question.

To :he r.ditoi-M the HKVIKW. In reading the newspapers it r-eoms that the "money question, the Silver question" is the mam issue now brime the people, and tin- Sentinel, the Indianapolis .Journal and many neuspapers purporting to lie republican and democrat journals all seem to have bolted their several parties and seem to have formed a new party, "the or

id

bug English party." for no such tiling as a gold sound money party ever existed in Ameriea unless it has b. en reeer.tlv formed by Byiium. Carlisle. Sherman, Harrison it C". li is well to notice the declaration of the two great political parties on this question and it will show that these gold papers ami gold advocates have ft their former democratic and republ.- an parties and now accuse those who ill stand on democrat or republican "money" principles as declared by the parties in their conventions, as having "left the party and gore after the silver craze." In the national democratic platform of 1S31, the democrat money plank is as follows. '•We believe in honest money, the gold and silver coinage of the constitution, and circulating medium convertible into such money without loss."

And in the republican national platform of

1SS1,

the money plank of the re

publican party was as follows: We always recommend the best money known io the civilized world, and we urge that an elTort be made to unite all commercial nations in the establishment of the international standard which .shall tix for all, the relative value of gold and silver coinage,"

But the country that elected Grover Cleveland endorsed the democrat theory "gold and silver coinage of the constitution."

And in 13S3 the national democrat party at St. Louis by the lirst plank in the platform adopted the platform of 1Q31 on the money question above set forth, and in 1SSS. the national republican platform of that year coutained the following declaration: '"The republican party is in favor of the use of both gold and silver as money, and condemns the policy of the democratic administration in its efforts to demonitize silver."

In 1S02 the democratic party in its national platform, paragraph 7, said "we denounce the republican legislation known as the Sherman act of 1880 as a cowardly makeshift. We hold to the use of both gold and silver a6 standard money of the country, and to the coinage of both gold and silver without discrimination against either metal of charge for mintage.''

This is where democrats now stand, and it is not democrats that denounce people as silver cranks who still stand on the declared democratic principles. InlS92]the national republican platform contained declaration as follows: "The American people from tradition and interest favor bimetalism, and the republican party demand the use of both gold and silver as standard money,"

Thus it will be seen lhat both the great parties were in 1882 what the gold bug papers now denounce as "silver cranks," as ran off after the "silver craze." Oh: what bosh it is the old cry of "stop thiuf." Those who now advocate the single gold standard have bolted the democrat and republican party and seem to have joined the Baron Rothschild, Grover Cleveland and John Sherman's English Wall street party, and are now accusing others of leaving the party. If they will turn the magnifying glass and look in at the other end they will see themselves out of the party. But this is not all. In 1892 the Indiana state platform of the democratic party contained a declaration as follows: "Wo denounce the silver bill, so called (the Sherman) as an ignominious surrender to the money power. It perpetuated the demonitizing of silver and tiie single gold standard, whereas the interest of the people require the complete remonitization of silver and its restoration to perfect equality with gold in our coinage. We demand the free and unrestricted coinage of silver upon the basis existing prior to 1873." This is where I stand now and it is where all democrats stand, and it is no wonder that the goldbug papers denounce democrats for standing on their principles and try to coerc* them into leaving the party and joining the "gold party," the 4th party

In 1892 the Indian? .-'^ata platform of the republican party, tleclarod on the money question as follows: "We cordially commend the action of

the republican congress or. the subject of silver coinage." Every democratic congressman who is recorded as voting, including the la6t candidate of that party for Vice President, at the timo of demonitizatiou of silver, voted in favor of that measure. Ex-President Cleveland by message to congress strongly opposed all legislation favorable to silver coinage and the law recently enacted (the Sherman act) was passed in spi'e of persistent democratic opposition, Cnd' its In nej/i-it nt iiilhti iin- silver has rapidly appreciated the gold standard of values. Farm products are advancing in price, ami commerce is feeling the impulse of increased prosparity. It will add more than 8r0,000,000 annually of sonmf citrn nr)/ to the amount in circulation among the people and is a hiii mi'f pnuhnd ttp toward fn.u coinage."

Now who is the "silver crank':" When did silver become ioisovml money under either democrat or republican principles as declared in their platforms? Never, no never. It is tho bolters who are condemning democrats and republicans as sHvr i-rnii/ s. It is the -1th party. Wall Street Goldbug Rothchild English party. But later still. In 1

SO 1

the democrats of Indiana in their State platform of Auirust loth, 1S9-1, less than a year ago said: "We endorse the repeal of the purchasing clause of that cowardly republican makeshift, tho Sherman silver act of 1SIK). We reaffirm our belief that both gold and silver should be used as the money standard of the country, and that both should be coined without discriminating againstj either metal and without charge for mintage. We believe it absolutely necessary to the welfare and prosperity of the great producing masses that silver should bo restored to the place it occupied in the coinage system of the world a quarter of a century ago." A quarter of a century ago would reach back to 1S70, prior to the demonitizatiou of silver in 1S7.L 1 stand on this platform now, and I think all other true democrats do All who now advocate the single gold standard have certainly bolted the party that adopted these plaforms, but accuse those who still stand by them as being bolters. But later still. In Juno. IS'Jo. the republican clubs of the United States mei at Cleveland, Ohio, with over one thousand delegates present, and that august republican body passed a resolution endorsing and adopting the Minneapolis platform of the national republican party in above set out as follows: "The American people from tradition anil interest favor bimetalism and the republican party demands the use of both gold and silver as standard money."

Now in all fairness, who ha-s bolted the party? Nobody but tho single standard gold advocates like Bynuui. Carlisle. Cleveland, Sherman, and the papers who justify them. The people of this country have been taught free coinage of silver and bimetalir-m by ail parties and all newspapers until a few of them have joined the gold forces, whoso only object is to increase the value of gold and decrease the value of labor and the products of labor, and to pauperize tho people just as the single gold standard has done in England, Scotland, Ireland and other gold standard countries, and if tho gold policy is continued here it. will inevitably reduce our laboring and producing classes to the same level of Scotland, Ireland and England. Do jou want that? If ou do join the gold party at onc3. If ji.u do not want it stand by American principles, the American linancial policy, the gold and silver policy established by our forefathers in our constitution.

G. W. PALI..

THK Sunday closing craze has run it6 allotted time. The first Sunday after Czar Bandel's manifesto was issued the city was what is known in common par lance as "air tight," and any person who would have dared disturb the Sabbath atmosphere by cracking a smile would have been promptly "run in" and given tho full limit. The seconu Sunday some of the more venturesome and lees Godlike opened up their places of business for a few hours and were not dis. turbed by the officers. This oeemed to lend confidence to others, and last Sunday the city resumed its wonted appearance. All the customary Sunday openiny houses were wide open and business was carried on with the usual spirit. The Good Citizens' League is indignant over what they claim, aB one of them this week said, "this gross and flagrant violation of the law," and threaten to have each and every violator prosecuted when the grand jury convenes in September. A bitter war is promised, not only in this city, but in almost every city and town in tho State, and the outcome will bo watched with interest.

THK selection of George Brewer for county superintendent by the republican trustees last neok, has left a breach in the republican ranks that will be hard to reconcile. Tho defeated candidates are crying fraud and are open in their threats to bring dire destruction to what they style the "ring" that engineered the deal through.

THE Illinois republican boodle legislature has adjourned. It was the moat corrupt body in the history of that State, and will go far toward again placing that State in tho democratic column in 1896.

THE Good Citizens League should turn its attention to the prefent city council. If there is any clause in the League's constitution which provides for the inspection and riddance of a cor [ruptcitv government it certainly has ample food for thought and ground for work. As between keeping a peanut stand closed on Sunday and renulating city affairs which involves thousands

1

and thousands of dollars it doesn't require much of a brain to see which is paramount. The ote is only baby play compared with the other. If the Good Citizens League yearns to ingratiato itself with the good people the city by accomplishing something that will echo down tho corridors of time let it array itself with the democratic party at the ni xt city election, and assist in exterminating a pi st that has for years held the municipal reigns ami eaten pap from the public trough. 'I be continuous reign of any one party always grows corrupt. Those cities enjoying the greatest prosperity are where politi cal parties are evenly matched or wherepolitics cut no figure and men are chosen from their titness io'- the osition.

Is this our case, and is it any wonder we are corrupt. Ihe Good Citizens League should paste this in their hats.

So MUCH partiality is shown in the distribution of labor among the laboring classes of the city by the common council and its hirelings that even Mayor liandcl revolts. A great many men who are forced to idleness by the scarcity of labor have made application for sufficient work to pay the taxes on their little homes, but the appeais have so far been to deaf ears and the dishing out of work to a select few goes right on with disgusting regularity. When such politicians as Mayor Bandel openely censures the council for adoptng such nefarious methods it must be indeed rotten to the core.

IN some sections of the United States it is reported that the heat of the past few days cooked the corn crop. The blades would turn almost white and then wither and die. In this communi" ty the heat only had a tendency to ripen the grain.
