He is the man that showed the council that the "White Elodhant" was a good thing. The Lafayette Courier gives the following: "The marriage of Chas. E. Helvey, the clever and genial agent of theO. S. Kelley Steam Roller Company, of Springfield, Ohio, and Miss Ricka Younger, sister of Mrs. W. H. Johnson, took place at the home of Mr. and MrsJohnson, No. 284 Main street, last evening, Rev. R. J. Swift anil Deadly Vengeance—Missionaries Thought to Uuvo Gone to Their Outlying 1'osts T.io Soon After the War.

London, Aug. S —A dispatch to This Pall Mall Gazette from Shanghui SOJM that furthor and ruliablo news of im alarming nature has been received there. It. is stated that fanatical outbreaks against the Christians have occurrod at Ching-Chow, a seaport of the province of Fo-Kien, and at liupoh, Thiping and Anil ui. These outbreaks, it is added, uro not morely the work of vegetarians but they are said to bo organized and carricd out by the Chinese (.lliciuls. The extent of the damage done is not yet known but tiio foreigners are reported to have escaped. Owing to the unsottlod state of the province 0U0 Sikhs, reliable British Indian troop-! from Hong Kong, will escort the liriti-h consul liom Foo-Chow to Ku-Cheng. where tho consul will conduct an inquiry into the recent outrages. The Shanghai euivespondont of The Pa. I Mall Gazette expresses the opinion that further outrages are inevitable unless Great Britain "takes swift and deadly vengeance."

Demolished the Hospitals.

In regard to the dispatch from Hong Kong announcing that the British and American missions at Fat-Shan, near Canton, were attacked by a large and infuriated mob, which demolished tho hospitals and cau-ied some of the missionaries to ti.-e to Shameen, it is stated that the Wesleyan mission has one of the most important medical missions in China at Fat-Shan. The hospital and station are under the charge of Dr. Wanyon, who has just arrived hero after a porilous overland journey, during which ho was arrestod in Armenia as a spy. Tho rest of tho mission staff of tho Wesloj-au mission at Fat-Shan are Chinese. They were attacked a few years ago, upon which occasion a missionary was killed. A representative of the Associated Press has had an interview with Mr. W. W. Uockhlll, third assistant secretary of Itate of the Unite 1 States, who was one of the ilalegares to tho rocent international gei«rap::al congress, and who returns to New York on Saturday next.

Missionaries Made a Mistake. Rofosring to the massacre in China, Mr. Rockhill said he thought it was a groat mistake for the missionaries to have returned so soon to the outlying stations after the conclusion of the war, especially as thoy had been warned of the danger so in anything about what £the United States and British governments might be expeoted to do under tho circumstances, but ho exprwsed himself as being certain that the diplomatic representatives of the different countries interested would make a common cause of such cases as they did when the Swedish missionaries were murdered at Sang-Pu. Continuing, Mr. Rockhill said he thought the vogetarians must be the North China society known as the Tsaili, who are not so much vogotarians as abstaiuers and non-smokers. Thoy are neither a political nor an antiforeign society, arid according to Mr. Rockhill a number of servants of tho United States ministry at Pekin are members of it.

BRITISH STEAMER WRECKED.

Only Three of the Seventy PaHseugem Said to Have Keaclied Land. SYDNEY, N. S. W Aug. s.—A boat's crew of Ohineso has been landed at Furster, about one hundred miles north of this port. The men report tha5 tho British steamer Catterthum, 1,4 -ij tons, whloh sailed from Hong Kong iv 27 for Australian ports was wrecked. The fate of the other members of the crew and the passengers la unknown. Later in the day details of the wreck of the Cutterthun were received here from Gutter. The Bteamshlp, it appears, was wrecked In the Seal rocks off Capo Hawk early in the morning during a gnle.

The passengers, who nuinberod seventy persons, of whom fifty-five were Chinese, wore asleep below whon the ship grounded. Only three of the European passengers and the second mate of the steamer were saved. The others are missing, but it is believed to be possible that they succeeded In taking to the boats and that they were afterward blown out to sea and may be heard from.

HCNTSVILLE, Ala., Aug. 8.—News has reached here that great excitement prevails at Soottsboro, Ala., over the arrest of Dr. May and a lulnlng expert named Dan on a charge of "salting" th« gold minos on Santa creek, in Marshall oouaty, by which a number of citizens of Soottsboro and Chattanooga were laduced to invest a good deal of money.

SPHINGFIELD, Ills., Aug. 8.—Governor Altgeld has received nothing farther from Spring Valley. No reports have been recolvad from there. The governor will not order troops unless absolutely neoesjary. He believes the trouble Is all over there. The oolored oltlzens' action advocating conservativeness Is heartily commended by all.
