Tie Sunday t'IUNin«(.
Through the efforts of the "Good I'izens League''most of the business uses wore closed on Sunday than betore in several years. Cards in the front windows of a dozen meat markets, said "Closed on Sun-lay," and few of the grocers houses were opened even for a few moments. Livery Stables, drug stores, hotels, etc paid no attentiou to' the ounday closing movement and were open as usual. Martins business ice I room, ho front room of the Journal and Ins!ej livery stable, all the proprietors of w!i, belong, we believe to the -MethoJist church and are members in' good standing, were opened, from which we are lead to believe that they do not believe in practicing what lie v. Tucker, of that church and 1 'resident of the Lea'.'in- enjoins upon them regarding Sabi.aUi closing. The movement so far as Keeping closed on Sunday was received with considerable dissatisfaction -iiid ridicule by many persons, and if persisted in will lead so to extremes. What right many persons asked, have ie hired help in the homes of members of the league, to cook and wait on these people on Sunday? If they work on Sunday and are paid fur it. so it is ar gueil has the butcher or grocer the

The jiroposed building of a new school structure at Darlington to take the place of tho old frame which has been condemned as unsafe has caused considerable dissatisfaction and ill feeling amonga number of citizens of that nourishing town. The cost of the new building is to be §7,000, and bonds drawing interest are to be issued to secure the money to pay for it. Charles JohnstoD. the attorney of this place, who has taken a hand in this matter, in his professional capacity we presume, comes in for a share of the abuse at tho hands of some correspondent of the Echo newspaper who favors the now building. To tho outsider it would it would seem strange, if they actually greatly need anew building for school purposes, and tho condemning of the old would seem to indicate that they did, that there should be objections to building a new one. The cost, 87.000, should build them a substantial and enduring structure. Linden has a splendid £0,0J0 school building. However the township built that aud not a corporation. With the rapid growth of Darlington for live years past it would 6eem that a new school building should be a popular measure.
movement partakes of fanaticism and ultra piety, of the purest l'uritan quality It. will soon spend its force and be forgotten. *,

Didn't Have the Nerve.
After makin threats that all persons who did not close their stores on Sunday would be arrested and fined, *ho Good Citizens' league said they would ,see that they would close, but when a leader was asked to tile affidavits ho said •it was not his placo and said it was knottier man's placo to do it. They have not the nerve and Sunday closing .will, not amount to much in this city as it has been tried many times before. .More kicks were heard than ever before, and every person who could leave the city did so. In time Crawfordsville will he run strictly under the "Blue Laws and everybody will be compelled to follow them Mayor Baudot said he was ready to hear all cases. Who will be the person to come forth and have these business men arrested? Porhaps thetlood Citizens' League is waiting for the return of Dr. Tucker.

Will II. 'Thompson, formerly of this city, was toastmaster of tho banquet of the State Jiar Association of Washing

speaking of his part says: "Champagne hail not been reached on the menu when Toastmaster Will. II. 'Thompson, of Seattle, arose aud holding in his hand the programme of toasts, a copy of which lay before each banqueter, began to speak. .Mr. Thompson paid a beautiful tribute to Spokane aud to eastern Washington, designating it as a country rich in resources, vast in its possibilities and grand in its good cheer and friendliness. Then he lowered his voice and every sound was hushed to catch his words. There was one thing in his mind that was eior associated with Doners and decorations, perfumes and mufric, happiness aud pleasure, and that to-night was absent—woman. To him she was an iniluence for good and gentleness, and ho hoped at the next banquet of the bar association in the boautiful city of Tacoma they would not be absent."
•1 he Montgomery County Fair will this year, as in the past, sustain its reputation as being among tho very best in the State. Tho directors are getting everything in order for a lirst-class exhibition and indications point to a lirstclass show in every respect. Pprsmiums in all departments are ample to pay exhibitors for their attendance. The premiums for trotting, pacing, and running horses are largo, and many excellent roadsters will be brought here during the fair week. The ground is in excellent shape for the fair, with plenty of shade, water, etc., for tho largo numbers of people expected to be present.
