'1 he op!e danced while) he played the fiddle. In this county alone in past years there., have been county ollieials who have, •.often made from c\S,00(J to 14,i)00 per Near. In other counties lii.e Marion, Viyo and
Aden, sonio county officials have been able to secure as u.uch as 620,(i00 per year. It indicates tiie dawn ,of better things to know .that such ui^antie legalized thievery as this lias passed and cannot soon return au'ain. The people through the leL'islature and the courts have liejit up a continuous ficjht until they have won a permanent victory. The laws certainly never aimed to pay such extortionate ealaries and fees as iu thousands! of instances have been paid to county otliciais in Indiana, yet tluouL'h corrupt schemes they have been paid, and through paid lobbies duriutc legislat'vo sessions, have been enabled to I old a tirm s, rip on the people. The present laws contemplate a reasonable pay to occupants of county offices and no more. Getting fortunes from such positions is not expected nor intended. The etrec!. however, on men always wanting crumbs from the official table will not be noticed. There will be just as many men wanting to run for office as heretofore, regardless of the emoluments of the future. Plenty can be found willing to sacrifice themselves for tin,' benefit of the public, and the i.ffices will be just as well tilled hereafter with the abbreviated salaries as formerly. Nothing is then to be feared on that score. No man is so important or useful but who in time can be succeeded by another just af competent. The decision is in the interest of the people and should .stand.
BRICEj THE "VENAL
To an outsider, one not living in Ohio, it would seem that the appointment of IJrico as chairman of the democratic State committee last week, was very impolitic, unwise and a foolish policy. Uriee, it will be remembered, with (lorinan and two other democratic Senators delayed for months tho passage of a tariff reform bill until the law relating to sugar, and in opposition to the sugar trust had been modified to suit the interests of the trust. Tho public believed then a'.id believe now that the trust bought these men. paid them immense sums for their votes arid influence. Now for a party to indorse or honor such men is the height of follyis an indorsement of corruption, and no honest men of any party will approve it. lirice in spite of his wealth and influence should bo kicked out of the party after his vote favoring the sugar trust. The people do not approve of corruption nor corrupt men, and the democracy of Ohio injure themselves by giving Jirice any attention whateverIf they approve of lirice and his past course they should not marvel at any defeat overtaking them.
A Yi Aii or more ago the i'ope of Rome advised and ordered that all CatholicH belonging to secret societies withdraw from them, and tlie officials of the church this country promulgated the order. There are thousands of Catholics belonging to the organizations of the Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows. They almost universally oppose this order from Koine. The latest iB ex-Congressman Foran. of Cleveland, who, although he is a Catholic, says he will not give up his secret society connections. Why the head of the church should oppose these orders whose principles are founded on morality, justice, good fellowship and scriptural teachings in general, is not explained, and Catholics by thousands in this country will pay no attention to it.
ADVANCING WAGES.
Over threo hundrod large manufacturing firms of the country located in thirty different States, and employing near -100,000 persons, have during'the past sixty dayH advanced the wages of their employees from 10 to LTj per cent How much better it would suit republican political schemers if it wore just tho opposite—that is wages reduced from 10 to 25 per cent.

TO TEST THE APPORTIONMENT LAW.
The Terre Haute Express says Senator David Turpie and General John S, Williams, of Lafayette, were in consultation here yesterday with Senator Voorhees to outline a plan for attacking tho constitutionality of the apportionment acts passed by the last legislature. It is their belief that the law is invalid by reason of tho fact that it was not passed at the time lixed by the constitution. They will take immediate steps to have the question settled by the Supreme Court. It was the contention of'republicans in the legislature that the previously enacted apportionment act being in contravention of the constitution, there existed an emergency for the passage of an apportionment act. The last legislature passed apportionment acts affecting both Congressional and Legislative Oi
THE "ALCOHOL" EXAMINATION. Next mouth and thereafter school teachers in their examination for license to teach, are to be questioned ou what they know regarding the effect of alcohol on the human system. After that probably another law may be necessary to tell what they know about the influence of tobacco, coffee, tea on the human sys'em, also the effect on mankind of hatred, revenge, free iove. benevolence, parsimony, etc. Of all the humbuggery being piled up now in the see. ingof an education, nothing can exceed many of the laws relating to school management, and this latest "alcohol'' business is one of the worst. Whoever liist suggested the enactment of the low it can safely be assertid was a crank, a fanatic of the lirst water.,.
Tin-: interest manifested by the temperance element and the saloon men in the Nicholson law has. in a measure diverted attention from the Moore bill, another liquor law passed by the late legislature. The Moore bill, unlike the Nicholson bill, is not mandatory, but at tho same time it gives cities the absolute power to say where saloons shall be located and liquor sold, and also gives the council authority to arrange furniture, fixtures, etc.. about saloons, Uuder the provisions of this law council could, if so disposed, confine all saloo to one street or one square in the c.-ity. 11 is in reality a much more stringent law than the much advertised Nicholson bill.
It is a rare thing to find the iron market advancing and booming along without the aid of the railroads, but that is the singular situation to day. Tho past week presents an unbroken record of advances and has been one of the most stirring in the history of tho trade. The Iron Age, in its summary, shows that this upward tendency has developed without the aid of heavy purchases on part of the railroads, and
the Central West leads in the general growth. Evidently the good, all-round work of the new tariff schedule is trimming industrial sails in ways of prosperity that evon it6 enemies must acknowledge as the material facts come to light.
Aftki: all the croaking heard a few weeks ago, it would appear that tho crop prospects this year, aside from wheat, are as encouraging and the yield will lie, generally speaking, as good as last year. The late rains have started corn, potatoes and grass to growing nicely. For the first timo iu many years a big apple crop is promised, and other fruits such as pears and grapes promise a good yield.
Inr expression that "corporations have no souls" is most times true, but not always. The Big Four in giving their employees a picnic on Saturday, is one instance at least where this can be contradicted. Tho company allows the employees their time, besides furnishing them transportation, which is quite a big item as there were several hundred here to the picnic on Saturday. The company grants similar privileges every year.
