On. has been found in paying quantities at Fortvillo, a small village near Anderson. The experiment was made of drilling into an abandoned gas well, and at a depth of 7" feet in Trenton rock, oil gushed forth at the rate of forty barrels per day. It is the opinion of many that oil wells will be developed nil tnrough toe gas belt. During the month of A pril o.jij wells were being drilled for tul in eastern Indiana. Wells county has j0 completed wells, Hlackford 11..lav bi, Atlains :i"J. (Irant 15 and Huntington 7. These wells are now producing about 1.UO0 barrels of oil per day. Men who own lands in the oil belt are getting fabulous prices for the privilege of using them.

DEATH OF EX-G0V. CHASE.
Kx
Governor Chase died at a town in Maine last Sunday after a short illness. Jly the death of Hovey in 'Ul Chase bo came Governor, and tilled tho chair until the inauguration of Mathews. Chase was a kind hearted man, an individual possessed of many kindly traits, and his death will be lamented by many. Ho was an indifferent business man, a poor politician, and should never have abandoned his calling of a minister for that of politics. As a minister ho was a success, and with the denomination to which he was attached possessed much influence.

strikes aiming employes in several lines of business were announced last week, particularly among coal miners in various western states where mining is carried on. After the experitr.ee which almost always follows such undertakings it would seem that strikes should be mrich less frequent, yet they are not.
