A SLV OLD WOODCHUCK AND PERSISTENT ENEMY.
A Long

HIS
It«-late« 111* Experi
ence With a Chuck That Had Become Very Smart Through Close Touch With Civilization,
"Spuakiu of woodchucks," said uu old Long I.slaud farruor tlio other day, "roiuinds IJIU of some curious incidents with 'em. 'Twarn't iuoro'11 50 years ago wheu tliey was thick as flies ou this island, an we ate them instead of rabbits an made tnnlHora and mitteus out of their skins. They was mighty warm, too, those old woodchuck mittens an mufflers. When 11 man wanted a big follow, he only had to walk down into the nearest liekl an take his pick out of two or three. They was so plentiful that it was no trouble to kill 'em. But they have been killed off now so that there ain't many moro roun. hint in awhile a bi^ fellow brings up a lister into tiie lower clover lot an we have to root 't-iii out. "Ever hum wooddmeks'.- Waal, it, ain't much if they be young oiie^. Jf you wait long enough, you'll catch them rumiiu across the lor in broad daylight, ]f you are good shot, vc.u can brim one down. They're tough, an a big 1V1-
low will cany away big load of shot, But, if you get hold of a big lclh.w, an old veteran, so to speak, you'll lind i' 110 easy jot. to dislodge him. Ho's too knowin a cuts to live, lle'll only eat your clover at night, au, Lord, how much lie 'iiii get away with in one night! in ihe daytime ho keeps dose into his hole an laughs at you. Dig him out: Waal, yes, yon can try it, but he'll dig a good deal fa .-tor on the other end than you will an take it. easy at that. .Mind you, I'm talkin of old ones—those know all the tricks of the business. The woodcliucks that on lind on Long Island are wiser than tlio-jn most anywhere else Vanso they have to be eunnin an shrewd not to get killed. They're so close to civilization that they learn new tricks all tho time. "A lew years ago a cunnin old fellow took uii his homo in that clover lield just olf the lower medders, an we had the hardest timo to kill him that you can imagine. I guess afore we got through with him ho cost us 'bout $100 —that is, fur clover destroyed an labor at $l. iO per day lost iu trying to capture him. 'Twarn't. any use layin in wait fur him with a shotgun. He was too wise to poke his nose out of the hole. But every night he'd come out an eat clover fast enough. Ho brought up seven litters of young chucks in that tield, but we killed 'em all except tho old one. He'd bring a new mato with him to his home every season, but she'd bo shot in tryin to savo her young ones.
But we could never get a shot at the prime mover of the whole troublo. Wo waited fur him on moonlight nights an did get shot at him onct. But I guess wo only crippled him, an he »iever ventured out again excopt on dark nights. We had no chance then. We tried to dig him out, but after three days of steady work we got tired. Then wo started to burn an smoke him out, but it ain't no easy matter to make smoke go down hill an get. into all of the holes that a woodchuck can make Filially wo decided to drown the old critter out. We got together all tho old pork an oil barrels that we could find au filled them full of water. Then when everything was ready Si au Jake, my two sous, stood ready with a pitchfork an shotgun while 1 poured tho wafer into the hole. "Waal, sir, that hole held moro water tharu any millpond.
t,eu barrelfnls to bring it up to the surface, an then, .iest as I put iu tho last pailful, that pesky old chuck showed his nose. Si jabbed at him with the pitchfork, an Jako shot tho handle to pieces as he banged away at tho critter. But. it wari 't no use. Thewatur soaked away rapidly, an the woodchuck went down again, grinnin at, our failure.
But. we wa'.'n' so easily discouraged. Next day we added live more barrels an all tii" tubs au pails round the house. Then wo began to flood that bole again. This ti ne we had plenty of water, but there was 110 woodchuck to appear. Tho water camo up to the surface an flowed out of the hole, but no woodchuck. We thought he had left his iiomo for good after his first duokin. l.tut no. Ho came, out. again that night, an ato more clover than usual je*t as it to spite us. Waal, wo found out in time that tho critter was so wise that lie had tlug his hole way up toward a hill so that ho could sit, up them an watch us pourin water in at the nthor end. This put a stop to any attempt to drown him out. "It was Si that rigged up the trap that linallv caught the old iellow. Me took a big stone weight.'bout, ."it) pounds an suspended it right over the hole. Then he lixed a little stick down below jist as he would set, a rabbit, trap. Tho old muskrat couldn't get out of the hole noway without, hitting that stick, an —well, the thing happened two nights later. The first night the critter didn't venture out, but the second niornin tho stone was down, au tho old fellow was crushed beneath it. We ain't had nemo in the fields since then."—New York Post. (•rwtt Courtly.' vjhiie. 'alve had an experience with tho cAirtesy of the Spanish thieves once while she was in Madrid. Two well dressed strangers stole her satchel, which contained some money and a number of luck pieces and talismans, including a bunch of dried flowers from her father's grave. Tho lors worried the artiste, but. when the newspapers reported tho thel't. tho thieves sent her tho precious relies neatly inclosed iu a packet, in which was a polito uote begging that the "finder" of the reticule might bo permitted to keep the money as a souvenir of BO bharming a vocalist —New York World.
MYSTIFIED AUTHORS.
Father I'root JVliult* II Hit* Dullness to Hoax Notable Characters.
Authors havo often mystified tho public, but a man who :nado a business 01 mystifying professional writers is a notable character. Such a one, howover, was the Rev. Francis Maliony, bettor known as "Father Front. His favorite trick was to take a well known aud popular poem, translate it iuto another language, boldly assert that in its now form it possessed groat antiquity and charge tho author with having stolen it. This trick ho played on more than ono noted author during the early days of, the present century, and each was sorely puzzled to explain tho identity of the poem which ho knew to be his own with that in a foreign language.
1
Front translated Moore's "Go Where Glory Waits Thee" into excellent French verse, attributed it to Mine. La, Oomtesso do Chateaubriand and charged Moore with having stolen it bodily. The Bong, "Lesbia Hatha Beaming Eye, ho rendered into choice Latin and claimed it as a youthful production of, his own, which lie had once shown to Moore. Another of Front's achievements was the translation of Wolfe "Burial of .-stj- .(o'un Moore" into French, claiming, at the same time, that, the lines were written by ('olonei do Bcauinanois, who was killed at Pondicherry iu 114!).
Not satistied with this, lie proceeded further and translated the lines lnioVj German verso and stoutly declared that, while Wolfe had stolen from the French poet, the latter had in turn pilfered--} from the German, ihe latter poem hav-
Electric Freak In a Church. Recently there was an eclipso of the electric light a^ Elm Road Baptist chapel, Southsea, and, curiously enough, tho pastor had chosen for his texts, Proverbs lxxiv, L'O, "The candle of the wicked shall be put out," and Psalm xvii. "JJS, "For thou wilt light my caudle tho Lord my God will enlighten my darkness,'' a combination rather cruel to the electric light, for when tho lights went- out some of tho congregation went out. also aud obtained candles and lamps, whereupon service proceeded. The pastor couhl not couvonientlv change his texts ir consequence

Saved His Life
--by a fortunate ilis-LDVi-ry in the nick of time. Hundreds of persons suffering from consumption have had the progress of the disease stopped, and have been brought back to life and health by the fiu'aU'li .Medical Discovery" of Dr. 1' i-. ree.
"Years auo Dr. K. Y. fierce, now chief consulting physician to th Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute of Buffalo, N". Y., recopnizinK the fact that consumption was essentially a j'erin ilisease. and that a remedy which would drive the ncrnis and their poisons from the blood would cure consumption, at last found a medicine which cui cd yS per cent, of all cases, if taken iu the earlier stages of the ilisease.
The tissues of the hums being in it.-itcd by the nerms and poisons ifi the blood circulating through them, the germs lind lodgment there, and the lungs begin to break down. Soon the general health begins to fail, aud the person feels languid, weak, faint, drowsy and confused.
This is the time to take Dr Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery it drives the germs and poisons from the blood, and has a soothing effect upon the dry cough. In cases of bronchitis the Discovery" is invaluable. "Golden Medical Discovery" increases tile amount and quality of the blood, thus invigorating and fortifying the system against disease and builds up wholesome flesh and strength after wasting diseases, ,as fevers pneumonia, grip and other debilitating affections.

It has hitherto been customary to fritter away the intellectual force of parrots by merely teaching them to say "Pretty Poll" and things of that sort, but tho municipal authorities of a French town have instituted what it is to bo hoped will become a general relorm. I The poor box at tho town hall, it I seems, had for a long time been in a I condition discreditable to tho more prosperous of tho inhabitants. To remind them of their duty toward their poorer I neighbors a parrot was purebasod, which was installed close to the box and trained to cry, "For the poor, if you please!"
Tho result, it appears, has been highly satisfactory, pence and silver coin having been freely given iu response to the bird's appeal.
The idea is capable of being applied in a variety of ways. Parrots might bo used, for example, to warn passersby of the proximity of wet paint on fences or shop fronts, or to remind people 011 entering a house to wipe their feet.
In fact, parrots might be made really useful members of society.—Youth's Companion.
