SINKS IN Til HI VKK.'
fit«:imtir l.miicreMnw (Jot'H Omvit :tnil Six are l.ont. Cincinnati. Ohio, IWnrch 0.—During: a heavy fojr yesterday morning as the steamer Longfellow, belonging to the Cincinnati. Memphis & New Orleans Packet Line company, was on its way to New Orleans it lost the course, crashed against a pier of the Chesapeake & Ohio railway bridge, and sank. The twenty-six cabin passengers were all rescued by the compan's harbor boat, the Hercules Carroll. The dead are: AULL. MRS. J. W.. Dayton. Ohio, body recovered and at the morgue. AULL. \V. J.. Dayton. Ohio, certainly lost body not recovered
ALDRICH. DAVID, ROME, N. Y„ passenger. CARTER, J. L.. Newport. Ky„ clerk. CHAl'VET. At.'OrSTUS. New Orlctns. barkeeper. MILLER, JAMKP, Cincinnati, colored porter.
Unfortunately thf complete list of the lo*t may never be known. All the records of the steamer were lost with it. and no passenger list is ever left ashore. The loss of the steamer is one of the tragedies of the riv*r which there seems to be no means of preventing:, short of the removal of hrldpe piers. The boat went all right until within a short distance before reaching: the piers of the Chesapeake & Ohio bridge, when the treacherous current began to interfere with the boat's management. There was no fog", as at first reporl"-d. but as the bow of the hoat pointed to the Kentucky short- the wind blew the smoke In such way as to entirely blind the pilot. The captain called back to run the boat south of the pier, but the current was relentless. The simple fact was that the biif vessel with the pilot's position obscured, was absolutely helpless. In a moment the Longfellow crashed against the pier ami was crushed like an egg. The destruction ,,f the steamer was almost instantaneous. Tt huiiK on the pier, while the current striking bow and stem broke It in two. and in less than (1v» minutes it went down.

The tramp was made to walk to the express car with the ensineer and fireman, lie h"-.,nl one of the robbers say that they had. bu:rgy in which they could ride, after leav- best tiiiioo! vc:ir ins tlie engine. It was explained thai the reason the robbe!:-. made no attenif to open the safe was the shor' tiint their disposal. The Oregon express was only i.me hour behind, and they had to finish the job before that» train approached or run great risk of being captured. The story of the hold-up, as told by Kngineer Ingh of the main train. is as follows: "A short distance south .of Castle switch myself antl Fireman
House were startled by a man who "crawled over the tender and, pointing a pistol at our heads, ord-red us tc stop the train. lie was masked. I stopped the engine and the fellow ordered us to get off. winch we did. The other masked men were standing on the ground ready to receive us. They ordered us to walk back to the express car. the men tellini.' me to instruct the messenger to open the door, as thev had dynamite and would blow up the car if the door was not opened. I told the messenger tills and lie opened the dooi and then shut it again, after which he fired two shots at the robbers. A passenger put his head out of one of the windows and one of the robbers tired a shot at him. The men again threatened to blow the car to pieces with'dynamite if it was not opened, and the express messenger then complied with their demands. The nun got inside, taking us with them, and ransacking the car. All the money was In the big safe and they did not try to open it. They ot nothing whatever. After satisfying themselves that thue was nothing of value outside of the sate, and that it had been securely locked, they jumped out of the car and went ahead to the engine again, taking us with them. Reaching the engine. the men uncoupled it from the train ami. tiring some shots at the passenger cars to scare the passengers. 1 suppose, pulled the throttle and started toward I.otii. A brakeman was sent back to Stockton to flag the Oregon express. which was soon to come along."
