HAGGARD. OF TIPPECANOE I Sena'or Haggard. of Tippecanoeeounty. the republican oflieial from that county in the State legislature. "ins to h.-about as contemptible squi:' as was his opposite. Mi-Hugh. two yars I ago Tlic other day in caucus he it- reported to have said ho would be ashau -d to no home to his constituents ui: il
every democratic otlicial of the Statu in stit utions had been bounced. From this remark very gooil flea cau be formed of the uii-ist ti ealitire of Tippecanoe's Senator, lie is without ques tion a (spoilsman of the first water, and iiis IDimi docs not reach above anything Suit spoiis. narrow contracted and has probably HS mucli idea ef liis duty to the people as the man in the moon. He I is the same individual who is seeking to saddle a debt of SK.lH.tmO on th- tax j'payers of Indiana through tin* fanatical and bogus patriotic idea that the State needs a soldiers' home in :ouiity. the real intention, as is believed -by many, t.o bo to provide ft places lor hungry republicans hereafter through dozens of positions that would have te be established to keep the tiling In running order. Haggard is just the kind of an individual to regret that political opponents were occupying otlicial positions -that some of his polit icai friends were needing, Me-Hugh ts one of Tippecanoe county's jewels when Senator two years ago. Haggard is another bright shining diadem. Now we would suggest that that county herealti give the State something not so brilliant nor dazzling in the way of
State Senatoi, 'J he State could easily get along with something more solid, with an individual laboring for tiie interests of the peopie. instead of a narrow partizan who is formulating plans to raid the treasury for the benefit of party friends.
THE NICHOLSON BILL. The Nicholson temperance bill before t'he S'ate legislature seeies to LM: a stumbling block to republican states men. Many of them would like to have the meas re pass but have not the moral courage to say so. They are afraid of the saloon inlluenee hereafter in its toffee toward the party. They have not the courage to denounce a wrong ami vote against it if they think it such, where they think it may contribute to the party's injury. Tho majority of tlie republican members of the present legislature is composed of time-servers, party policy men, seekers for spoils, who, if they have any liied ideas for the better government of the people, have not the courage to thus act and vote if there is any prospect in thus doing so they may antagonize some other interest.
A FINANCIER NEEDED.
The tinancial management of this government anil the advisors of it seem to know little of the subject in hand. They seem to be till moved by hellish pecuniary interests, and the good of the entire country is a mattor consideration. Any street has behind

At important I crici-es in tjie hi.-tory of a country some great mind arises to assume command and by his ability bri^g order out of chaos, law .ut of misrule. The time fi-r the appearance of pome great patri otic and unseltish financier to arrive is now here, and t- country awaits 1 ,tnjii"tv his arrival.

AS A LEADER.
\f a political manager the late Isaac P. (iray will be more missed than any man in the party for the past twentytive years in Indiana, lie was not in particular an orator or graceful speaker and in this particular is not to be com-
Tippecanoe pared 'or one moment with Hon. T. A. Hendricks and others who might be named, but in political strategy, the ability to discover the weak places in the ranks of th.- enemy autl perfect plans to firing about victory through them, none weie to be compared to
Gray. He know all the arts of the shrewd politi :ian, and knew how to apply them. The effective work in politics is always just before the decisive light is begun, anil no leader of the democracy in Indiana better understood this than the Mibject of this article. (Iray may not have been succesful in managing "grand rallies'' barbecues and such like, but in getting men out to the polls and getting them interested in the party's success he was a peer among thy leader Politics was a science with him. and i.. may be a long time before any other man equally as shrewd arises to take his place.
PROTEST BY CATHOLICS. At il recent meeting, held in Logans port by the Catholics belonging to tilt? Knights ot Pythias and Independent Order of Odd fellows, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:
Whereas. An edict from the head of the Woman Catholic church has beet published and ordered to be put in force that any Catholic can not belong to the Knights of Pythias and Independent Order I )Jd Fellows and hold m«mberslnp in the church at the same time:
Resolved, We, as members of the Roman Catholic church do not concur with the edict published,
Resolved. That e. as members, knowing that there is not any thing in tho above orders conflicting with our relig lous views: '1 herefore. We do not fej that wo should be barred from membership the same.
Resolved, That. we. ac, Catholics, do prefer to hold our membership in these orders as well as in the church, inasmuch as we believe in the teachings of both, and hope that the church will reconsider the course it has 1 alien.

MAY BE HE RIDES FREE. A somewhat animated discussion in the House of Representatives last week I over the motion to sond the anti pass bill to the railroad committee, where it would bo heard of no more, was decided after a vote that it bo not so disposed of.
Mr. Mcf'rea. our representative, favored it being given to the committee, but the majority of the House on vote said different. The question might fitly bo asked does Mr. AlcCrea ride on a freo pass, or does he pay his way?
THK Lafayette Courier laments that in the new apportionment likely to bo made by the legislature for Congressional purposes Tippecanoe will probably be placed in a district not cast iron republican. Its lament is useless. It may be to the county's permanent benefit to fall into good
