Where Disease Is Bred.
When a sewer is clogged or choked up the accumulations poison the atmosphere in its vicinity and bring out the condiiio::-, that breed disease. We all kiio that in time of pestilence every p: (.-caution is taken, not only to keep the sewers free and open, but even to remove ali decaying matter from the community. The danger of infection i•- thus minimized. How few of us who pay taxes for the maintenance of s.miturv bureaus for the public health think of :tn equal requirement for our individual welfare. The alimentary cam*! is the great s^wer of the human system. When that is dammed up conditions are generated which invite fevers and such diseases as our na'ure inclines to. Constipation is a clo y. :ng of the natural drains, and nearly everything we suffer from follows this condition. It will not do merely to clear the drains from time to time. We must repair and improve the working power of the machinery who-,e function it is to perform this work. SlIlilllN liilc licuits differ from pills in that they are more than a mere cathartic They not only stimulate sluggish bowels and clear the system of all disease-breeding matter, but they remedy the evil complained of they restore power and freedom of operation to the secreting organs, and they tone up and strengthen the entire system. They are easy and soothing in action. Try them. 25 cts. a bottle, 5 bottles, $1.00. For sale by diug-gi-ts and medicine dealers throughout the country, or by mail, postpaid, on receipt of price. A Valuable Murr Iv 111 «*i) by I j^litnitiu. During the severe electrical storm last Saturdaj night lightning str.ick the stock barn on the farm of ere Harlow, seven miles west of the city. A standard bred two year old Gen. Smith mare, standing in one of the box stalls was killed, but the building was only slightly damaged. The horses standing in the adjoining stalls escaped without injury. The mare, which gave promise of being valuable in the show ring, was appraised at 6D00. The building and contents were insured against tire ajid lightning in the Ohio Farmer's by Yoris iV Sti 1 well. This is the second time the building has been struck by lightning within the past two years.
TUo l.a*»i !)a» «if INuuju ii. The grand spectacle of "Pompeii" was witnesse-.1. Thursday night at Indianapolis by an immense and enthusiastic audience of (J,000 people. The performance was perfect in every particular and far surpassed the most sanguine expectations. The high wire artist, Prof. Weitzman, thrilled the audience with his daring and seemingly impossible feats. The acrobats gave a marvelous performance and the daring revolving ladder act was seen for the first time in Indianapolis. The fireworks were grand. Those who attended the World's Fair say that the display at "Pompeii' surpasses anything seen in that line there.

Ice .linking Plant. It is said to be tho purpose of the Water and Light company to purchase the necessary machinery, locate it in the old electric light building and begin soon the manufacture of ice. Should this prove correct ice may hereafter be a cheaper commodity than at this time, and the competition may be strong between it and Mr. Martin the present owner of the ice plant here.

The Robin Wm Win Enongh. to Kat* Joat Row. That was a charming' object leBson which n-as noticed in the yard at the
Hickories," up Windsor avenue, in Hartford, and it was an instructive lesson in helping oneself as well. Midway between the house and barn is located a large cask as a drinking place for the horses.
Usually, of course, this tub Is nearly lull, but at the time referred to the water lacked quite a little of reaching the top, Alonjj came a robin, spinning over the ground like mad, only stopping- for a moment, as is his wont, to listen. Reaching the tub he quickly vaulted to the edge. A look of disappointment was visible when he arched his pretty neck so that one eye could look down at the water. It was too far away and the bird trotted around quite ill at ease. Tho faucet was leaking just a trifle—only a drop at a time—drop, drop, drop—and the robin's eye finally caught tho crystals and the little fellow almost shouted for joy as he danced "round to that •ide of the tub.
Placing himself directly underneath t.is outlet, ne threw back his head, opened his beak, and thereafter each drop landed in his parched throat. More than a dozen drops disappeared down the narrow channel then tho robin bowed his head just a little, so the cooling drops landed on the top of jt and trickled down on either side. Ihen it flew away to a neighboring tree, as content and happv as if at peace with all the world.
THE COLD FEVER.
A Ilomorobrtince of tho Days When It First Struck California. J- was a resident of San Francisco in 1848 wnen the gold fever struck that part of the country," said Matthew I*. Farrell, one of the pioneers of California, "and it seemed as though oil the people went- wild with excitement. As soon as it became known that gold had been discovered, men hastened to sell tlieir real estata and merchandise that they might obtain means to journey to the gold diggings. Row boats worth S50 were sold for 8500 to those wishing to sail up the bay into the Sacramento river. Tho price of shovels and picks jumped from SI to 810. Stores were rummaged for bottles, vials and brass tubes to hold the gold when found. "In less than two months San Francisco was as if swept by a pestilence three-fourths of the male population had gone to the mines. Real estato dropped fully one-half in value, and the same happened to all merchandise not used in the mines. Labor ros9 tenfold in price, ^cgro waiters received S10 a day and cooks S15, but even such wages as these could not induce the eager gold-seekers to remain in the city. Xearly everyone went to try his luck. Some made their fortunes, but many came back a good deal poorer than when they btarted."
And the Follow Climbed Down. A young man dwelling on the borderland of aristocracy, where, as George Eliot says, annexation becomes a burning question, was entertaining a group on a hotel piazza. With great freedom he swung into the conversation by their familiar abbreviations the names that decorate the Gociety columns. At length a woman, gazing pensively out at sea from the depths of a Shaker rocker, turned to the young man and, bending over tho arm, said: "My dear sir, you have buried a man who was alivo on Friday. Such haste is not seemly. You have divorced a woman now happily wedded. This is premature. But when you marry my husband to another woman, I must reproach you. My dear sir, you should rcspcct, the law, if not tho gospel."
Sickened of tho Scnlpcl.
An extraordinary event led Lassone, physician to Louis XVI. of France, to abandon his anatomical studies. While selecting from among soma "^ead bodies a suitable subject for diseeotion, ho imagined that one of them showed doubtful signs of death, and sought to revive a life which was perhaps not extinguished. His efforts were crowned with success. He cured the man,and as he was poor nourished and supported him, but the idea of having been on tho point of commiting a crime so affected Lassotie that he felt himself unable to pursue his aocustomed labors, and from that timo forward the study of natural history aad chemistry took the place of that atomy.

Peculiar to Itself.
Hood's Sarsaparilla is peculiar to itself, in a strictly medicinal sense, in three important particulars, viz: first, in the combination of remedial agent3 used second, in the proportion in which they are mixed, third, inj the process by which the active curative properties of the preparation are secured. These three important points make Hood's Sarsaparilla peculiar in its medicinal merit, as it accomplishes cures hitherto unknown.
But it is not what we say but what Hood's Sarsaparilla does that tells the story. What Hood's Sarsaparilla has done lor others is reason for confidence that it is the medicine 1

Is a dangerous condition directly due to depleted or impure blood. It should not be allowed to continue, as in its debility the system is especially liable to seriouB attacks of illnecs.
