THE BIG FAIR.
WEEK OF FAST HORSES. FINE
STOCK AND FAMILY
REUNIONS.
One of Biggest Thuursday's in His
tory of the Fair Notes and
Incidents.
The monotonous cry of tbu anny of hawkers, the crowing of the proud game rooster and sharp cackle of the premium hen, the vociferous neighing of the big stallions and infantile whinna of the lost eolts, the lowiug of over-fed cattle, the bleating of prize sheep (and those that didn't get a prize) accompanied by the disgruntled grunt of tbe fat porkers from the adjacent pens—all these and other familiar sounds officially proclaim that the big fair is now drawn to a close. By reason of so many counter attractions the attendance has hardly been up to former years, yet these conditions render it all the more pleasant for those who do attend and exhibitors have fared better as the premiums will not he divided among so large a number a* heretofore Fair exhibits are to be seen in all departments. It is believed the proceeds have been sufficient to make the association come out even. More extended notice of the various departments is contained in the notes that follow
NOTI'.S.
The poultry show was all right.
D. (1. Legg, of Tipton, was expert judge on cattle.
Mr. Lehman was starter for tho races again this year. The water supply was as refreshing ami plentiful as ever.
\V. A. May, of Sharpsville, was expert judge in the swine department. Mrs. Schloidler and Mrs, Beesom, of Indianapolis, were the judges in Horal hall.
Allen Robinson carried otT the largest string of ribbons in the vegetable disj filav.
The special policalanded a man on Wednesday for selling liquor on the grounds.
W. 1). Cox's cages of mice in the pyramid at the large fountain attract much attention.
The art display of Mrs. Julian, of In diauapolis, was an interesting feature in Horal hall.
The ribbons in the sheep pens were tied on by expert judge, J. K. Tomlinson, of Fairland.
There were eight herds of sheep on exhibition and the show was an unusually good one.
Lee Fork, of Knightstown, performed the difticult task of naming the ribbons in the horse kepartment.
The fat tailed African sheep were there. They were exhibited by a sheep grower from Putnam county.
The Younts woolen mills make an elegant display of blankets, worsted goods, yarns, etc., in tloral hall.
MeCluro A- Graham made a rich display in carpets, portiers. lace curtains and tho like in their old space in floral hall.
The mammoth buggy tent of I). J. Woodward and Mort Reckner adjoining Mechanic's hall contained a rich and cottly display. Their colored glee club was the envy of all side shows on the ground.
II. K. Tinsley fc Co..- and Cohoon AFisher have neat and elegant displays in their respective lines in mechanic's hall. The former was under the skilled supervision of Monsieur Grant Gould and the latter of handsome Howard Griffith.
Kostanzer's Sons occupied their old space in floral hall with a rich collection of parlor pieces, couches, carpets, etc. An exquisite couch, combination book case and secretary and handsomely finished extension table, three pieces in their tine display was 6old before the fair was half over. At their double store rooms on south Washington street may be seen a grand display at all times. Their leaders are furniture, carpets and stoves, and the stock is larpe and complete.
The track was so heavy on Wednesday that the races were uneventful. However, the program was carried out, which consisted of a 3:00 trot, purse 8170 the 2:50 pace, purse, 8150: and the half mile and repeat run, purse 850. Joe Glasscock's Little GifT won the trot in three straight heats, with Julius Caesar a close second. The beet time was 2:55. In the 2:50 pace there were 7 starters. Elijah Clore's Dan S. took the race in three heats. Roe
Byrd's got second money. Best time 2 41. The running race was won by Raeelet, owned by J. R. Rankin, of Klmdale.
A high attainment in realism was reached in the quaint log cabin of Zaek Mahoruey A: Sons, to be seen in the annex to tloral hall. The wide tire place with the strings of dried apples and pumpkin hanging near, tho wild skins on the wall, the tallow candlesticks and the old spinning wheel presided over by Mrs. Sarah Dunbar, all suggested the plain and comely living of earlier days. Just adjoining, and in striking contrast, were the modern and wealthy furnishings of a suite of rooms by Louis Bischof.
'Tis music that charms end sooths tho throbbing multitude. Floral hall has been full of it all week. Over in, the north wing of the hall the I). II. Baldwin & Co., under the able management of Geo. Hughes, occupy their old sp'ice with a rich display in pianos. Excellent performers have been at the service of tho throng of visitors to rentier selections. The D. H. Baldwin A Co., now have three large factories—two at Cincinnati and one at Chicago. At Cincinnati tire manufac tured the Decker [Bros., Haines Bros., Fischer and Islington pianos and at Chicago the Estey and Hamilton organs The concern has a large capital stock and has an equipment for business in their lino that leaves little to be desired: Mr. Hughes, the home manager, can therefore offer thoroughly reliable instruments at a low price with a guarantee to givo perfect satisfaction. Visitors aro always welcome at the music rooms on south Washing street.
Thursday's. Kucr*. The track was in excellent condition and barring the siid accident to Gee Grimes, the races full of interest. (Jue Allen lowered the track record two seconds in the 2:2S trot, without a skip or a bobble.

Foil in tlu» rrrk To Die. On Tuesday afternoon Mat tew Scott of Waynetown. was fishing in Coal Creek that runs along the north side of the town. About-") o'clock he was presumably struck by appolexy and fell in the creek. Alex McClure was socn attracted to the scene by the splashing of water, to find the old gentleman sub merged up to his neck and struggling as if in groat agony He was immediately removed to his home, but up to the time of his death, which occurred at 1 [o'clock the next morning never regained consciousness sufficient to make his ailment known. Mr. Scott was 80 years of age and a Mexican pen sioner. He leaves a wife and severe grown up children.
In tin* second heat of the free-for all pace on Thursday afternoon, Gee Grimes driver of Guerita, was badly hurt. Just before the wire was reached in the last round Guerita fell and Mr. Grimes was hurled headlong and landed by the side of his horse, Minnie R. was right behind and went over the sulky, receiving injuries about the fore legs. She went iu the next heat, however. Mr Grimes sustained a severe coucussion of the spine and may not recover. He was removed to the home of his father ou west Wabash aveoue. He is conscious. It was a narrow escape from breaking his neck. He made a short turn with his horse to get the pole from Minnie R.
