Where Disease Is Bred.

When a sewer is cloggcd or choked up the accumulation poison the atmosphere in its Vicinity and bring about the conditions that breed disease. We all kno.v that in time of pcstilence every precaution is taken, not only to keep the sewers free and open, but even to remove all decaying matter from the community. The danger of infection is thus minimized. IIow few of us who pay taxes for the maintenance of sanitary bureaus for the public healtii think of an equal requirement for our individual welfare. The alimentary canal is the great sewer of the hum:n system. When that is dammed up conditions are generated which invite f-veis and such diseases as our nature inclines to. Constipation is a clogging of the natural drains, and nearly everything we suffer from follows this condition. It will not do merely to clear the drains from time to time. We must repair and improve the working power of the machinery whose function it is to perform this work.

Voorhees' lleiillh. Great concern is felt among the Indiaua delegation at Washington City About Senator Voorhees' health. It is co secret here that he has baen gradually failing for a year or more, and, as he is now about J7 years of ago, any improvement in his condition, it ie feared, is not likely to bo more than temporary. The senator's intimate friends do not seek to conceal the fact that he is steadily failing iu health and they have no hopes of his permanent, recovery. If lie lives to serve out his term it will bo as much as his friends here hopo for. They do not look beyond that for any future public career of his. Senator Voorhees' ailment is organic. The cause of his recent collapse was an inllamation of the bladder, which, while it has been relieved, has not been cured entirely, and still keeps him in his room most of the timo. Hut he has a more serious .trouble, that gives uneasiness to his friends. It is valvular rheumatism of the heart, which his doctors discovered about a year ago, and which has been carefully nurBed since.

Siiiniin'1- Itewrl-. .i- v, „,I It is veiy fashior.able to take summer outings, to go to the Shades, Indian Ford and Ma,vinkuckee. Many people get to see their namos in the papers by going to these places and that, you know, makes up for all the fatigue and expense in going to such places. It is the sublimity of satisfaction to have tho notice made that Mr. Sickspittle and family aro enjoying themselves at the Shades during the heated term. It may convey the idoa to the world that Mr. S. has plenty of mouoy, plenty of tune, and is a man of the world, although I10 may owo for the family washing. Although so far as the enjoyment is concerned, most any reasonable person could content themselves a milo from town, anywhere along Sugar Creek, that would appear too common altogether, and would not look near so lofty in the newspapers. Such is the silly vanity of many people.
