Where Disease Is Bred.
When a sewer is clogged or choked up the accumulations poison the atmosphere in its vicinity and bring about the conditions that breed disease. We all know that in time of pestilence every precaution is taken, not only to keep the sewers free and open, but even to remove all decaying matter from the community. The danger of infection is thus minimized. IIow few of us who pay taxes for the maintenance of sanitary bureaus for the public health think of an equal requirement for our individual welfare. The alimentary canal is the great sewer of the human system. When that is dammed up conditions are generated which invite fevers and such diseases as our natun: inclines to. Constipation is a clogging of the natural drains, ami nearly everything we suUer from follows this condition.
It will not do merely to clear the drains from time to time. We must repair and improve the working power of the machinery wlio-.e function it is to perform this work. Slllitll's ISilc BeilllS differ from pills ill that they are more than a mere cathartic They not only stimulate sluggish bowels and clear the system of all disease-breeding matter, but they remedy the evil complained of they restore power and freedom of operation to the secreting organs, and they tone up and strengthen the entire system. They arc easy and soothing in action. Try then). 25 els. a bottle, 5 bottles, $1.00. 1'or sale by druggists and medicine dealers throughout the country, or l.y mail, postpaid, on receipt of price. The board of trustees of Wabash college was in session on last Thursday afternoon and evening considering uutinly matters pertaining to financial management, and detail. A review of the year's work indicated that .all branches of college work had been carried on with great elliciencv and that the departments were fully manned and equipped. Certain plans looking toward the development of particular lines of work were carefully considered and so fiir as possible arranged for. Attention was given to the financial methods and conditions "-for another year, and adjust, ments made looking toward increased stability and usefulness in this direction.
Notwithstanding the stringency of tlie times it is expected that all branches of college work will be maintained at their present high standard and the expense kept strictly within the limits of the income.
Action upon the resignation of Professor Alexander Smith was postponed until the June meeting of the Board in the hope that he might be induced to reconsider his request and remain in the service of the college.
The public will be glad to know that the faculty will remain unchanged and additions made to the working force as rapidly as the means of the college will permit.
The departments of Athletics and oratory arranged and provided fur by private friends of the college will probably be continued in the same way during next year the attempt to do so will at least tie made.
An Open Air Baptismal Service? Last Sunday was a notable date in the hiBtory of the Otterbin U. B.church. The pastor, R. M. Zuck. has performed a good work there within the past sis months, adding about 87 persons to the church membership. After the service lant Sunday the congregation repaired to Offiel Creek, on the Gilliland farm, and the pastor administered the ordinance of immersion to IT persons and that of sprinkling to 7 persons. The ceremonies took place in a grove and was witnessed by a large crowd of people. Over '250 conveyances passed through the gate into the grove.
An unpleasant incident occurred just after the service by the indiscreet actions of a couple of young alecks whose conduct was next to sacrilege. They wore riding behind a stallion and trying to cut a swell. As soon as the audience was dismissed they drove into the water where the immersions took place, and the horse becoming frightenened or entangled through striking quicksand began to rear and iiovur.-e in a threatening manner. He finally freed himself from the buggy and broke away, leaving the buggy and boys in the creek. It was then Mr. Zuck's privilege to walk to the water's edge aud give the boys a plain lecture, which he did, much to their chagrin and complete humiliation. If Mr. Zuck is again disturbed on a like occasion he should call upon the law to see that good conduct is maintained.
