A DAISY TICKET.

Of all the tickets nominated in years past by the republic .ns of this township, that of Saturday last is certainly entitled to first premium. The republicans themselves acknowledge that it is a daisy, and very many of them are disgusted with it. With one or two exceptions it is as poor material as could possibly be selected. Gilkey or VanBcoyoc, were either particularly well titted for the duties of tiustee, especially in that feature of the otliee relating to schools and school teachers, yet they seemed to not be in it at all. and the convention after a struggle settled on Symmes, who knows little or nothing of the duties of the position, but was selected by the younger element of the party and because he was an A. I'. A.

Hamilton for Assessor! What do you think of that? Can lie really ti'l the outios of the office? Many republicans say no. lie was chosen for 11is former services for the party, not for any fitness for the place, and if there is one on the ticket I hat will be defeated it is assuredly him if the voters ol the township take into consideration the import auce of the office to then:,

Buck for Justice of the Peace'/ Is not that a lulu choice? lie has had his name upon the ticket of every political party of the country for some years past for some petty otliee, and just what side he was on nobody knew. Altogether it is a "honey uf a ticket'' and disgusts many voters of the party in talking of it. The democracy can nominate easily a ticket of better material, and if so. can elect it, as a large number o'! the republicans do not desire to.support it if something better is presented.

NOMINATING AN A. P. A.'"

rl

lie republican township nominating convention on Saturday last in selecting Samuel Symmes for township trustee have chosen a leading member of the A. P. A. organization, in fact the man who introduced the principles of it in Craw fordsville and aided more than any one in installing the lodge here. The principles as all know are in many respects similar to the old Know-Nothing organization of forty years ago. Any man a member of the Catholic church is prescribed from holding any office of trust or profit according to the rules and regulations of the A. P. Association. Mr. Symmes will not deny this himself, he cannot and tell the truth. Although many of the ablest Generals of the late war were Catholics they could not, if living, according to the A. P. A. creed be allowed to hold any official positions. Such doctrineB as these are un-Ameri-can, undemocratic, are wrong, and are denounced by the best men of the country, and a man holding them should be prevented from obtaining any official honors whatever. For his zeal in the work along about the first of the year 1S93, Symmes was bounced from his position in the Journal office, even that paper at that time disapproving of his doctrines, but the Journal to be thoroughly "loyal" must eat from the dish set before it. and no doubt, will now give him its support.

Rkpchlican fitness for office in this township seems to be gauged altogether by candidate's connection A'ith some secret social or political organization. Although he may not be able to add up three columns of figures correctly or know anything about correct business methods, the qualification seems to be, is he a member good standiug of the G. A. R„ the A. P. A., the A. S. V., the K. of P.. or the I. O. O. F. or some organization. These alone are very poor recommendations for otliee, and if a candidate has nothing more to commend him it were better for him and the public that he bo defeated. A man's business capacity is or should be the first consideration with the public. The country has had entirely too many "clever fellow" office holders. There should be less cleverness and more business tact =n"ght for in candidates.

Hakkisun's boom for Presidential nomination on the republican national ticket, if his friends are not more cautious, will explode prematurely. It keeps them busy now denying his candidacy, yet few people will believe that he dqes not desire it again if it can be secured without a big hard tight. McKinley and Reed are also in the race with both feet and the contest betwoon the three promises much back biting, amusement and interest before it terminates.

Theevidence in the trial of the bank looters at Indianapolis will leave no question in the mind of a disinterested observer that the right men have been indicted, that they were as cunning and dishonest in all their actions as any bank burglars, and that justice will only be appeased when everyone of them receive sentences of long confinement behind bolts and bars.

COXEY fOUND GUILTY. COMINtt THIS WAY. The trial of Coxey and other leaders Kelly's Commonweal Army is now in of his band at Washington City last the vicinity of Quincey. Illinois, over weeli for trespass in walking over the

A ftkk thirty years of high tariff protection, why should there be destitution among the poor if a tariff benefits them? After thirty years of high tartiT who possesses the wealth of the nation? The rapid concentration of wealth among the few is (lie greatest danger that confronts our country. What is the remedy for the evil? Make wealth bear its just share of the burdens of government. Tax incomes. The greater the income the greater should be the tax.

Under our tariff system the poor have beeu bearing the burdens. Why should the millionaire not pay more toward the support of his government than the daylaborer? We predict that the most popular feature of the new tariff bill will be the income tax. It will likewise be the most just provision.

BIG LICENSE.

Danville, Illinois, and perhaps other towns in that State, compel men running saloons to pay high for it. LaBt week the city council of Danville licensed 3S men to run saloons, and each saloon must pay into the treasury of the city 81,000. thus netting to the city the sum of 53S.000. Although a high sum for license this does not seem to lessen the number of saloons, nor particularly to monopolize it. Crawfordsville has perhaps about one-half the population of Danville and has IS saloons which pay 8100 each for license.

Tiik colored voters of Indianapolis have worked themselves into a frenzy and now vow all sorts of things because one of their number was dragged from an elevator of the New Dennison House and not permitted to ascend in it to a higher story of the building to see a friend. The New-Dennison is republican headquarters at the Capital, and this treatment of the colored man ami voter is received with much indignation. The colored voters will find out some time that the. sole and nly use the republican party has for them is to \ote for it, nothing more.

The thing I going from ljuincy to Peoria. From looks much like a farce. No particular there Danville, and Crawfordsville harm was done by his intrusion, and if would be in a direct line. This city has auv other person, not so notorious just heretofore been oil'the route of these now as Coxey, had done the same thing I tramps and crauks, but from this init is questionable if any attention! formation we are not to escape the would have been paid him. Coxey and plague after all. Tne easiest plan, if his men are, no doubt, cranks more or there should bo an mtlux of these lees, yet fortius there is some other way gentry, would be to give 'h.'tn one nu-al less brutal than clubbing and imprison- I and then force thetn to pass on. ing them to serve them. If a mob of high government officials or of bankers I'1' tariff deform, not reform, that from Wall street would have done us the Senate seems to be aiming to bring Coxey and his men did in tram pint,' down the grass would they have been arrested? l-lardly. The worst punishment to them would probably have been a reprimand. Then why not treat Coxey the same way? Is it to impress the cranks of this countrv

h. a a though having but a short official life, managed during his little brief term in the State legislature to do much more harm than goodf vTake for instance the municipal law regulating the length of terms of city officials. That was a measure introduced by McHugh. There can be no question that counciluien. for instance should be elected as often as ('very two years. The presence of many tuen acting in that capacity is often injurious after a short time. Tl

to concoct schemes to get money out of corporations or contractors having business with their cities, yet under the present law which is Mcllugh's, they remain in oflice four years, instead of two as heietofore. A thrifty, unscrupulous man when opportunity offers can "Hue his pockets" quite lively during a four year's occupancy of councilman's place. The old law should bo restored so far as it relates to citv niacin's.'

iu a dirty breach of promise suit at Washington City, is a candidate for renomination for Congress, and has entered upon a vigorous canvass of his (Lexington, Ky.i district, lie has continued to further play the hypocrite by asking forgivness of his constituents for his conduct with Miss Pollard and re-join-ing church. He should be retired permanently for the good of the service anJ himself too.

Rathf.h than continue the farce of trying to pass a tariff reform bill the wisest thing for the Senators managing it would be to drop it and adjourn They can do no worse both for the country at large and their constituents at home, if they stop at once for whatever they do will create more dissatisfaction than if they dropped it permanently now. The exhibition of jackasses at a district fair could not show off more "points" than the present U. S. Senate.

What Will Do It

Medical writers claim that the successful remedy for nasal catarrh must be non-irritating, easy of application, and one that will reach the remote sores and ulcerated surfaces. The history of the efforts to treat catarrh is proof positive that only one remedy has completely met these conditions, and that is Ely's Cream Balm. This safe and pleasant remedy has mastered catarrh as nothing else has ever done, and both physicians and patients freely concede this fact. Our druggists keep it.
