Washington, April 16.—It is the general opinion that the career of Congressman llreckinridge as a public man lias been effectually squelched by Miss Pollard's prosecution and the jury's verdict. One of the hardest obstacles that he will have to overcome grows out of his presentation of Miss Pollard to the widow of the late Gov. Blackburn. As might have boon expccted from a woman of Miss Pollard's temperament the long strain of the trial culminated in a nervous eollanse, and she is suffering from nervous prostration. The attending physicians do not anticipate any serious efleets from her illness.

Miss Pollard's brother, J. 1). Pollard, is a young man of years of age. He said: "My sister has mad*' no plans for the future, and we can not tell yet what she intends to do. She asks me to say that she never entertained any intention of going on the stage. Nothing could be farther from her thoughts or intentions. It is absurd. It is true that telegrams on the subject have come to her to-dav, but no attention will be paid to them. All she asks now is to for rest and quiet."

SISTER OF MERCY SLAIN.

Authorities of lierlln Make a Horrifying Discovery Near That City. Br.iu.iN, April 10.—The authorities of Berlin are investigating a terrible crime which has been committed near the Grunewald colony, on the outskirts of this city. The body of a young and beautiful sister of mercy was found near the road leading to the Orunewald forest district, partly concealed by bushes, and a gaping wound in her throat showed how she had met her death. The murder had been committed, evidently, after the commission of an assault. The premises showed that the victim had made a struggle for honor and life. Beyond the footprints of a man there was nothing to give a clew to the identity of the murderer.

A few hours after the murder of the sister of mercy a young peasant girl, who was passing near the (irunewald colony, was set upon by a man, who attempted to assault her and tried to cut. her throat when she resisted. Luckily this was a powerful country girl and she succeeded in lighting oil her assailant and in raising such an outcry that a number of people were soon attracted to the spot and joined in the search for the mail who assaultlier. I'rom the information gathered by the. police they are of the. opinion that the man who murdered the sister of mere .- and the one who had assaulted the peasant girl are identic»l

Reaching that place at 4:'i0 o'clock he was closeted with I'.rowne for nearly an hour. Apparently Browne told only his side of tlio story, for Coxey went at once to the opera house. l'rotost Ac.tinsl the Wanton Destruction of the IViitlieroil Tiibc. An American dealer sold last year 2,000,000 bird skins. All were used for ornamenting woman's attire. Women ought to cry down this vanity that feeds and pampers the destruction of the feathered tribes. The. birds sacrificed are, of course, those of the richest plumage, anil, of course, also those that will be least eas-ily replaced. In fact,if this thing continues, American bird lifeof tlie gen tier order will pretty soon become extinct. Charged with Assault.

Bki.i.kfontaink,Ohio,April 10. —Seymour Newlin, a negro, Saturday assaulted an aged woman Mrs. Knowles, living at llushsylvania. He was captured yesterday morning, but when the sheriff arrived from Bellefontaine to take charge of the prisoner a mob which had collected refused to give him up. The sheriff summoned a posse, but still the mob would not yield. A call was then made upon the militia, and a company left Bellefontaine late in the afternoon for the scene of the trouble.

The crowd of infuriated citizens at llushsylvania were apprised of the departure of the military and long before their arrival were armed and massed around the calaboose to receive them. When the company arrived at the building 100 voices warned the soldiers that the citizens were determined that blood would How before the prisoner would be surrendered, and that any effort at force would be useless. They declared dynamite bombs were under the building, and that the prisoner would be blown to atoms if a gun was fixed.

Sheriff Sullivan then held a long parley with the leaders of the mob, and it was finally decided that if Sheriff Sullivan would order the militia to Bellefontaine the citizens would guard the prisoner until morning and give him a lieariug in Ruslisylvania, and that Sheriff Sullivan would make no further attempt to get the man until after the trial.

The militia arrived here at S:30 p. m. The dynamite talk was supposed to be a bluff, but after the departure of the soldiers no less than six bombs were hauled from under the calaboose.

At s:")0 the mob made a raid on the calaboose. The building was overturned and the struggling negro quickly taken from it. A rope had been procured, a noose was put about the neck of the trembling wretch, and he was dragged to cottonwood tree about one hundred yards distant Little, was said, and no opportunity was given to the prisoner to make a coufession or statement. A dozen willing hands grasped the rope, and the negro was swung into the air. As his body rose above the mob the air was rent with shouts of the men and women who had assembled to witness the lynching. As soon as the work was finished" the mob dispersed and quiet was restored.
