A Successful Day at School

On last Saturday Clarence Fink completed his winter term of school at Ridge Farm, and as he has taught the school with perfect satisfaction to all the patrons, and much benefit to the scholars the patrons of the district concluded to return the compliment by presenting Mr. Fink with a handsome dinner. The west half of the district met at -lames Wilkinson's and the east half at Fruits P. O. The signal was given and tho delegation moved forward at eleven o'clock sharp. Tho dinner party advanced to t^e door and knocked, Mr. Fink opened the door and expecting to receive only a few visitors as is the custom with the closing days of a country school, but to his great surprise, each and every one carried a basket loaded to the handle with provisions of all kinds. The object of the meeting was soon made known to him and dismissing his school turned every thing over to his much welcome visitors. No sooner was school dismissed than the tops of the benches were made to serve as legs to tables with boards spread over the tops. This done the ladies began to spread their table covers and in less iiuno than it takes to tell it two tabies full length of the house, on each side of the room was loaded with any and everything oue could wish to eat. After dinner was over one could scarcely miss what was eaten, after feeding one hundred and tifty persons. Then' seemed to be but one of the patrons who was hard up with but little work and a large family to support. A statement to this effect was announced to the house, whereupon' each and everyone donated a portion of what tiiev had left to this unfortunate family and a committee wasappointed to deliver the same to the unfortunate ones. consisting of a washingtub loaded with provisions. The table was then cleared when the visiting party gave way to the teacher once wore, who made out a program for a literary entertainment which did justice to himself and scholars. This being done Mr. Fink concluded to draw his exercises to a close by presenting each and every one of his scholars with a handsomely cloth-bound book. And thost' aUunoiing every day of the term each with a copy of Shakspare's works Wh then extended invitations, to all those who might wish to speak a word in behalf of tile school. A few remarks were made whereupon he closed his programme by biding all his scholars good-bye. Everyone went home feeling joyful and happy and freely exprc-ssinii their desire that Mr. Fink may be with them attain and teach their next term school.

Measnrini the Distance.

W'liilo at the battie-tieid of Shiloh (.Jen. Wallace will have a survey inai:'e of the route over which he marched with his division the day of the battle, His friends have suirgested that lie have this done in the interest of correct history. It has been averred that Wal lace's division did not march more than a mile after leaving Crump's Landing on that day. (loiioral Wallace has always maintained that his division marched about thirteen miies. aud he now proposes to have a surveyor go over the route with him and take the exact distance, (leneral Mcl iinnis said that ho was only sorry that (ieneral Wallace had not had the distance of the I march measured many years ago. "It ought to have been'done before (ieneral tirant died." said (ieneral Mc iinnis. "Friends of Conera! Wallace, who have gone over the route in recent years, assert that the route is not short of thirteen miles."

The Petition Not Grautea-

A petition, signed by over three hundred tax payers, praying that the new Orphans' Home building be erected on the old site, was presented to the Hoard of Commissioners on Monday. The petition was denied. The Home will therefore be located in the tract of land in Britton's lilen purchased Ijy the county for that purpose. The county ?an doubtless sell the old site, comprising 17 acres of land, especially if it is divided ui), to much better advantage than the new location. Jn denying tho petition of tho tax payers, the commissioners made the following explanation for so doing: A tavorablo consideration of the petition would have vitiated the letting till a new notice had been given, and the specifications retiled with the change in the location designated. This would have delayed the work at least seven weeks and at a big expense."
