A Novel Clipping Machiun-
This is an age of novelties. There are novel machines and novel people to apply them. One of the latest and most peculiar devices is a machine for clipping horses. It works to perfection and clips a horse as smooth as a mole's back. Harry Nixon and Jim Sullivan are training some colts for Judge W. P. Uritlon among a string of others at the fair ground and they put in their spare time clipping horses. So Mr. Dritton helped them buy a machine, that they might more rapidly and satisfactorily perform the work. One man turns a crank that furnishes the power. A small endless chain runs through a rubber tube and transmits the power to the clippers that skins over the animal's body and mows ofT the surplus hirsute like a lawn mower. The operater holds the tube and can movt the clippers at will. The boys can turn out a cleanly elippeo! horse every hour and are making money. The working of the machine does not frighten or annoy the horse in the least, but it rather seems to enjoy it.

Chlcusro Iioa'ril of Trade' OiH'.UiO, March 17.—Considering that tho Chicago wheat trade 1ms been waiting for weeks for cash business to star' a bull market there was remarkable lndilVorenee to all iniioenees:Lliis morning, oradstreet's gave wheat ami Hour® nt bu compared with about 2.:,til,, the week previous and about S.bOO.'XK) a year ngo. The general belief also l'uvored decrease of nearly 2,0!'0.000 in the visible supply for .Monday, lint the export clearances was accompanied by the prediction tlmt the country can spare feed and seed for four months and export 10,000,000 a month for the same time, and still have good reserves July 1. The Jtay price started a fraction higher at oS^c, touched SSXe, made a little buige to tho first hour. hen tlie bull market failed to appear the pit became dull and the market heavy, and there was a drag ging decline to afrer 1! o'clock, and near the close held barely at Friday closing price at .,e. The story of wheat out of condition in a vessel in the river started the story of weevil, ami this was the chief cause of the late selliug. although the arbitrator iti the case said the cargo was simply wet by a leak in the hatch of the boat and not over (00 bu to be replaced. On the late soiling May wheat went to 5S ,,c with no rally.
The only thing to prevent heaviness in corn was a great bull market in wheat. This last backset iu wheat has left corn without a prop. Once the price for .May got under 3Tc there was heavy selling by all classos, with, perhaps, some raiding by the late bull houses to make a market to buy on. NKW Yoiiic, March 10.—Tho French line steamer La llretagr.c, while coming iu on her way from .sea last night, went ashore off Fire island. The accident occurred at midnight. It is not known whether the ship has been wrecked or not. or whether there lias, been any loss of life.

The La lirctagnu is one of the larg'est ships of the French line. 'lhe latest advices say that the steamer has been wrecked and that there has been a great loss of life. This can not be continued. The steamship people are very reticent. They usually arc in an accident of this kind. They say that there is no fear. Agent lorgetof tile company, however, hurriedly left for the scene on a special

Humors are rile. -N'one of them can be believed as they lack continuation and all have to be taken for what they are worth for the siune reason. The place where the La Lretagne is ashore'is one of the worst on the coast. The Mirt at this pla.ee is extremely dangerous. From what can be learned it would seem almost a miracle if a steamer went ashore at this point and escaped Vicing wrecked.
It is not believed that the steamer is in any danger. There is not much sea on and the wind, which is coming out ot the south, is blowing- only a light breeze. The captain of the sent a boat ashore wish be sent to the agents of the company in New ork, notifying them of the accident. Xoneof.th.se in the boat would give any detail or explanation of how the accident occurred.
Men from the life-saving station have gone to the scene of the accident to give whatever assistance they mav be called upon to render It is not believed. however, that their assistance will be required. jVThe steamer can not be seen well from lie shore, but to all appearances she is not hard aground and is resting easily.
