Genial Man Remembered.

The late Mit Galey whose death occurred only a few days ago in this city, will long be remembered by hiB old and later acquaintences for his genial disposition, the vein ot humor which pervaded his '.'onversation, and the seemingly apparent wish to look at the bright side of everything. "Mit" was a finished singer and a natural comedian. Away back in 1S5G. '57 anil '58, he in connection with Harry Morgan, Ozro J. Dodds, Tip Wade, Beal Galey and two or threo others organized the "Crawfordsville Minstrels." and from the start it was a success. The entertainments consisted of songs, farces, etc., interspersed with local hits, and at ovcry exhibition big audiences greeted them. Everybody went and the shots made at this or that incident of a local nature created loud applause. In all this Mit seemed to secure a large share of the praise meted out to the company. A short time before the war the company disbanded and Mit never again appeared, we believe, before ths public. Tho old company, however, is still remembered by many of our older citizens, who do not hesitate to say that its performances were the best they have ever Been before or since.

5.—Mr.

Gladstone

has written a letter to Earl Rosebery congratulating him upon his accession to the premiership. In his letter Mr. Gladstone promised to aid the new prime minister whenever his assistance was asked. It is understood that Earl ltoseberv's communication to Sii William Vernon llarcourt has resulted iu the latter consenting to retain his position as chancellor of the exchequer and in his accepting the government leadership of the house of commons.

Notwithstanding the fact that yesterday was nominally a day of rest, Lord Koscberv was busily engaged all day. Mr. Herbert Asquith, the home secretary, and Earl Spencer, first lord of the admiralty, visited him and remained some time. Afterward Lord Rosebery called upon the earl of Kiinberley and offered to him the post of foreign secretary, made vacant by his promotion to the position of prime minister.

Sir William Vernon llarcourt had a long interview with Lord Rosebery in the afternoon. The new prime minister has appointed Mr. Munroe Ferguson his political private secretary. Lord Rosebery has been the recipient of many congratulatory letters and dispatches. Among those who telegraphed to him were the prince and princess of Wales. A large number of persons left their cards at Lord Ro.sebery's city residence, 3s l'.erkley square.

All the machinery and upper works and all except about four feet of the lower deck are under water and directly in the course of drifting ice. The boat will be a total loss. It is valued at S?5.000. The int Stillings owned by Selzer Bros, was carried up against the bank by the ice and one side is down in twelve feet water while the other is high and dry. Much of the machinery is under water. It is valued at S^OOO and is in danger of tipping over and being destroyed by floating ice. 1 he crew of the Bennett, six in nui.il.ti escaped to the shore b\- jumping f'.om one ice cake to another.

CKIIAI: RAHIIS Iowa, March .. Heavy rains caused the Cedar river to rise between three and four feet in a few hours, carrying the ice out into the river. About fifty feet of the dam was carried out with the ice. When the water goes down it will lower tho water above the dam about four feet exposing the inlet pipe from which tho city gets its supply of water, thus making a water famine imminent unless the repairs are made immediately.
