The applicants are all former otiice holders or professed politicians, and for once it might be policy to appoint none of them, but to give the otiice to some worthy ex-soldier who is not begging for oflico. There are several of them in Indiana.

Speaking of how and why he acquired such expert marksmanship, tho renowned author-soldier said a few days ago in conversation with a party of friends: "When 1 vras governor of New Mexico that territory was and had been for years terrorized by bands or daring and murderous outlaws, at the head of whom was the famous border desperado, "Billy the Kit!." liy virtue of my office I became this man deadliest enemy. No man over excited more terror along the
For weeks there was unbroken suspense during which he heard nothing from the pursuer or pursued. They were both dead shots and there would be killing when they met. It was a most remarkable and exciting chase. The whole territory was deeply intent upon it and news of the whereabouts of the two men was eagerly awaited. "Finally, onG day there rode up to my residence a travel-stained six-footer in wide sombrero hat, mounted on a peny worn out with hard work. He got off let his pony wander loose and came up to tho door. I met him on the front step with my guns ready for instant use audajUed him his errand. 'I am Pat Garrett, governor, and have just shot 'Billy the Kid' out here at Ft. Sumner.' And it wastrue. Hehadcomeup with tho desperado heading for Santa Fe to end me, had got tho drop on him and without a word shot him through the heart. I have still kept up my practice somewhat, but not un Icr as thrilling circumstances."

frontier or gave better ground for the y®llow metal, lhls^ chloride is used for dread in which ho was held than this
man. He perpetrated murder after murder and their were few crimes of, which he had not been guilty. He had openly boasted that he killed nearly fifty men and enjoyed shooting a man down •just to see him kick.' I determined to rid the territory of this scourge and offered a large reward for his capture. The offer proved to be a great sensation throughout the territory and a tempting bait to tho ready shooters and officers of tho law. There were in the territory hundreds of men who accepted with great delight this opportunity to take a hunt through the mountains after such formidable game. Well, tbe result wat that after a most exciting chase the outlaw was surrounded by overwhelming numbers and compelled to surrender at the point of fifty guns after shooting down three of his pursurers. He was taken to Lincoln county, away up in the state, to answer an unusually flagrant murder. Ho was wildly enraged at having been trapped and swore that the moment he ever got frQe ho would ride clear through to Santa Fe, 6hoot me down and then gladly hang. "I knew the character of the man and while never dreaming that he would ever again be at large, I determined in order to be safer, to begin pistol practice in case an impromptu duel should ever take place between ua. I got a brace of the best pistols I could find and every morning epent an hour out in the corral firing at a mark. In a few weeks I got eo I could hit the figure of a man marked out on the wall at twenty paces about every time. And as I became more and more skillful, I felt correspondingly safer and didn't much dread an open meeting even with the caged1 murderer and with my life for the stake. "Two months dragged along and one day down at Santa Fe we got the alarming news that "Billy the Kid" had murdered his two jailors, stolen a horse and had started for Santa Fe with the open threat, 'Now for the governor and then hang.' Then I began practicing several hours every day and for wee«s was in daily expectation of meeting the ruffian. I still went about my duties, but heavily armod and with my pistols ever ready. Pat Garrett was the sheriff to whoso charge 'Billy the Kid' had been entrusted, and when ho learned a half-hour afterward and while away from home, that 'Billy the Kid' had escaped, ho started in hot pursuit.

Odd Place for a Snitke.
Mr. Edward .lones, who resides at Alexandria, Ya., was chopping some oak wood one evening when he came across a piece that was very hard to tplit. He worked at it till it came apart, but was dumfonuded when he found a snake in the centre of the tough piece, rolled up in a ball, with no means of ingress or egress. The wood had grown around the reptile to the thickness of 0 inches on all sides, proving conclusively that he must have been there for many years. Some who viewed tho stick and the smooth cavity where his snakeship had lain calculate that not less than a hundred years had elapsed since he took up his abode where he wa-s found. The most curious part of the story is that the snake was not hard, dry or petrified on the contrary, he was as flexible as any snake would be rolled up in winter quarters. Mr. Jones had several handsome offers for either the snake or the split stick showing his abode, but all offer# were prompt vefuaed.
Made nig Own Stamp!
An interesting story of the ending of some old postage stamps which were engraved over half a century ago comes from Providenee. The postmaster at that time was Welcome
Saylery, who considered, as the Uu'ted States had no postal service then, that the idea of a stamp for the Providence postoflice was a good one. He grew enthusiastic over the work, and in a short time a copper-plate was produced. From this eleven stamos, ten five-centers and one ten-cent stamp wero made. This was tho proportion of high and low stamps used in those days. The stamps were a great novelty when they appeared. Recently Lycurgus Saylor, a relative of the deceased postmaster, pulled out of a pigeon hole a role of the ancient stamps, the sheets being in good condition. They wero purchased by a Philadelphia collector.

Argus-Hyed and Ilydra-Ileudod. The term "Argus-eyed" means watchful. According to the Grecian fable Argus had 100 eyes, and Juno set him to watch all of whom she was jealous. When Argus was slain she transplanted his eyes into tho tail of the peacock. "Hydra-headed" is a word derived from the fa"ble of Hercules and the Hy.lra. The Hydra had nine heads and Hercules was sent to kill it. As soon as he struck off one of its head^, two shot up in its place.

Compare the luxurious habits of the present legislators with those known to have been in vogue not over a century ago among one of the most aristcr cratie bodies in America. A Blessing Indeed.
What would this poor, weak humanity do were it not for those strong, noble, restless spirits who are ever searching the caravans of knowledge for the good of mankind? Dr. Greene, of 35 W. 14th St., New York, who a few years ago gave to tho world that priceless boon, Dr. Greene's Nervura blood and nerve remedy. has now introduced another bless ing for the aick and suffering. He is the most successful specialist in curing all nervous and chronic diseases, and he offers to everyono, far and near, the opportunity of consulting him, free of charge, through his iyetem of litter correspondence.
Write him about your complaint and send for his symptom .blank, and he will return you an exact explanation of your cas.e with advice, free of charge, and tell you how you can be cured. Ho gives most careful and explicit attention to all letters, and his answer always gives the sufferer a perfect understanding of tho disease. If you wish to avail yourself of this great physician's skill, write him at once about your disease and you will undoubtedly be cured.

A "Trust" Which is Popular. There is a great deal of indignation felt against trusts. The Sugar Trust, the Standard Oil Trusi, tho Welsh Tin Plate Trust, the English Salt Trust, and other combinations of tho kind, are vigorously denounced, and it is a Eubject of controversy whether there are more trusts in England than America, arid whether protection or free trade fosters them. But there is ono form of trust against which no one has anything to say. That is the trust the public reposes in Hood's Sarsaparilla.
