Royal
Biking Powder haa the
enviable record of having received the highest award for articles of its class— greateit strength, purest ingredients, most perfectly combined—wherever exhibited in competition with others. In the exhibitions of termer years, at the Centennial, at Paris, Vienna and at the various State and Industrial fairs, where it has been exhibited, judges hare invariably awarded the Royal Baking Powder the highest honors.
At the recent World's Fair the examinations for the baking powder awards were made by the experts of the chemical, division of the Agriculture Department at Washington. The official report of the baking powders which were made by this department for tho specific purpose of ascertaining which was tho best, and which had been made public, shows the leavening strength of the Royal to be 1G0 cubic inches of carbonic gas per ounce of powder. Of the cream of tartar baking powders exhibited at the fair the next highest in strength thus tested contained but 133 cubic inches of leavening gas. The other powders gave an averago of 111. The Royal, therefore, was found of 20 por cent, greater leavenstrength than its competitor, and 44 per cent, above the average of all the other tests, its superiority in other respects, however, in tho quality of the food it makes as to fineness, delicacy andwholesomenesi, could not be measured by figures.
It is these high qualities known and appreciated by the women of the country for so manv years, that have caused the sales of the Royal Baking Powder, as shown by statist:-'::, to exceed the sales of all other baking powders combined.

Common to Xoarly All Civilized Countries—Issues In Various Nations. Almost, if not quite, all civilized countries use paper money to facilitate payments within their own jurisdiction. The United States use paper money to a greater extent than any other country, aud in notes in smaller denomination than any other country of equal importance. All of our paper bills except the gold certificates are in the denominations of 81, S3, So, $10, 820, 850, 8100, S5U0 and 81.000 our gold certificates do not appear in denominations less than 8^0. The Dominion of Canada issues 81 and S3 notes, and various banks issue notes varying from 85 to 81,000. Mexico issues paper money of 10 pesos and upward and the South American states issue paper of similar denominations. The bank of England issues all English notes in denominations of £5, £10, £20, £50, £200, £300, £500 and £1,000. The banks of Scotland and Ireland issue notes of £1 and upward. The bank of France issues notes for 50 francs, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 francs! The bank of Belgium issues notes of 20 francs and upward. Italian banks issue notes ot 1 lira and upward to 1,000 lire. The bank of Germany puts out notes for 5 marks and upward to 1,000 marks. Austria issues notes of 1 gulden and upward. Russia is the only European country which issues government notes, its paper money being of the denomination of 1 ruble and upward. Sweden, Norway and Denmark issue by their banks notes for 5 krone, 10, 25, 50 and 100 krone. India does not issue paoer money, nor does China now. Japan provides paper money of 1 yen, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 100 .yens, and the other countries, as a rule, issue paper money, the lowest denomination of which is usually ten limes the value of the coined unit of value. Ho was about to go on when a window was opened above.him and a woman's voice demauded: "Say! Are you a burglar?" "No, ma'am," was the reply. "What are you doing there?" "Just tying up my shoe." "Oh, that's it!" "Did you want a burglar, ma'am?* asked the pedestrian, thinking he detected a tinge of disappointment in her tones. "You don't see any around, do you?"' "No, not just now. but I presume I can find one somewhere about. Is it anything special, ma'am anything which won't keep until to-morrow night?" "No, not so very special," she answered. "My husband went away with 513 in his pocket this morning and came home drunk about an hour ago. I've been through his pockets about six times and can't find a cent and I thought if you were a burglar and could look him over I'd divide with you on whatever you fouud.

IKOOMI TAX CAUSING DISCUSSION.
MUCH
A Special Station Held In the Treasury Department, Bat Nothing Decided Upon—Deolsloa In Judge Long'e Pen* •ton Case Delayed—Washington New*.
Washington", Jan. 2.—Members of the majority of the ways and means sommittee were in sessioi until nearly midnight at the treasury department, trying to reach a conclusion in regard to the imposition or rejection of an income tax Owing to the absence of Representative Hynum, it was deemed inadvisable to take a vote, and after session of over three hours, an adjournment was agreed upon until this afternoon at 3 o'clock, when it is the expectation that a vote will be reached.
There were ten members of the committee in attendance at the meeting, but they were eveiriy divided on the proposition, so that a determination of the vexatious problem hinges upon the vote of the Indiana congressman, Mr. Hynum. It. is pretty well understood that the majority on the ways and means committee is divided (5 to in favor of an income tax. An clfort has been made to swerve Judge Turner of (ieorgia from his stand for individual income tox and induce him to support the taxation in incomes of corporations, but thus far without avail. Chairman Wilson. Hourke Cochran, and Kepresentative Breckinridge of Arkansas walked home together after the meeting, but were decidedly non-committal as to what they thought would be the outcomc of the discussion.
Some, of the democrats in the house and senate who oppose au income tax have suggested tho advisability of raisiug the revenues which would accrue from incomes by a restoration of the tax on sugar not exceeding one cent a pound. The suggestion is one that the committee is not likely to regard favorably. I'rom the data at hand the committee learn that the consumption of sugar in this country since the duty was removed hits increased from ten to fifteen pounds per capita. The increase comes almost entirely from the use of sugar in the t'ruit industry, which received a great stimulus from the introduction in this country of free, raw sugar. Not only has tho home market enlarged, but the shipments of American fruit have greatly increased. A restoration of lie sugar duty, it ia believed, would seriously embarrass this growing industry.

Gates Not to Oppose Morgan. Washington, Jan. 2.—A report has been telegraphed from this city and widely circulated that Congressman Oates wonld oppose Senator Morgan for the senate before the next session of the Alabama legislature iu November, The report is pronounced by well-informed Alabama politicians a6 being not well founded. Senator Morgan's reelection is regarded as a certainty, as he has the united support of the regular democracy, and his candidacy is favorably looked upon also by the Kolbites because of his free silver views. When Congressman Oates was in Alabama recently he said be would oppose Senator l'ugh for the senate three years hence, and this statement probably gave rise to the story that ha would run against Morgan,
