THE "GEBEYMAKDEE" AOT A few of the republican party leaders of the State, through altorneys, have filed suits in the Marion county Circuit Court to test fhe constitutionality of the lriMslati"© appointment of tln last Gene'-al Assembly, otherwise krrnwn as the "(Jerrymander law." Tho •gerrymander'' business was first inaugurated in this State, by the republican* during the halcyon days of Gov. Morton. It aimed to kepp as many demm-rats out of office as possible, and was fur a time a success, but soon reacted i.pon its originators and the democrats soon defeated them. After that unwise and time serving democrats followed the course formerly pursued by republicans, and adopted the "gerrymander" business-, returning evil for evil. Tho whole business is wrong, infamous and impolitic. It takes away the will of tho people and substitutes that of scheming, sellish, office-wan ting politicians. It is 6hort sighted, unfair and selfish, and we hope the thing is played out permanently hereafter by both parties through its own odiousness. It recoils on any party adopting it and it is perfectly natural that it should.
Bkother Hauhhey, tne President of the Indianapolis National Bank, which he succeeded in wrecking to the extent of several hundreds of thousands of dollars will very likely be made miserable the rest of his days. The charge of tho Judge to the grand jury is very clear concise and urgent, and if Haughey escapes from along term in the penitentiary it will be remarkable. He i6 clearly gui'ty of embezzlement and squandering funds of other people, and his age should not shield him.
The republican party has been meddling with the tariff for years. Its "tinkering" has been in the interest of the protected millionaire beneficiaries. It has been raised higher. Now when tho democratic party proposes to revise it in the interest of tho peoplo those who have growu rich by the favors of government sot up a great howl. Very natural! "What thief e'er felt tho halter draw, with good opinion of the law?"
Our farmer subscribers who may desire a good agricultural paper fnr reading during the ensuing year, are informed that we club the Review with tho Indiana Farmer, Indianapolis, or tho Orange Judd Farmer, Chicago, and furnish the two papers for 82.00.
The President has appointed J. S. Harrison, a brother of ex-President Harrison, to tho position of surveyor of the port of Kansas City. He is a democrat, the only one of the three brothers o! the family that is of that political party.
Reduced tariff taxes and an income tax, with tho administration's financial policy, true prosperity will come to tho rank and file of the American peoplo.
Every intelligent person must admit that President Cleveland is a bigger man than Harrison in morn ways than one.
New York cast 400,000 votes loss at tho recent election than in 1892. Tho empire state is normally democratic,
Rev, Tucker on Foot Ball Games. Kov. Tucker, of tho M. E. church of this city, in tho "Herald," a small weekly paper issued from the church, says regarding tho game of foot ball:. "A foot ball game, as now played, is a disgrace. A prize tight is an indication of Christian intelligence as compared with our college foot ball.
Is it no concern to Christian gentlemen that young men are being maimed Cor life? Is it a part of a Christian collogo's work to make blood hounds out of young men?
Wo understand that several students came from DePauw for the purpose of gambling on tho game. Do those students represent the training given at their college? The names of thoso who gambled on the game, we understand, have been secured and will be brought before the next grand jury. As the laws of this state hold tho owners of property responsible for violations of law that may bo committed on their premises,.tho trusteos of Wab'ash may find themselves before the courts to answor why they allow gambling on their property. Why should a saloon keeper be prosecuted for allowing gambling on his premises and a college trustee be alimvi'd to go free?"
It is somewhat remarkable that Wabash college managers and processors who have always distinctively claimed for that institution strong Christian features and principles, should allow such a heathenish and brutal thing as foot ball, with all tho gambling attributes that follow it to bo played on its ground. A light within its high board inclosure between Mitchell and Corbett would bo every bit as respectable. would tend to develope tho muscles fully as well as foot ball, and would bo attended by many of tho same class that patronize the gamo. The best thing the college authorities cau do is to stop the thing right now, and not permit another such exhibition heroaftor. If the students do not liko it they can quit and go to some other college that tolerates such sport, but Wabash can flourish best without it.
DEATH FROM MURPHIHE.
Mrs. John 0. Wampler Takes ail Oyer Dose of the Drug With fatal Effects.
That "One woe doth trod upon another's heelp, so fast they follow after" is sadly being verified in the case of Wm, H. Durham. At an early hour Sunday morning the word came to town that his daughter, Lillie, had died at 3 o'clock from an overdose of morphine. It was a severe shock to those who heard It as the sad news was told from lip to lip, but how much more so must it have been to the husband and bereft parents.
On last Friday Lillie was down town and bought fifty cents worth of morphine at Nye & Boce's drug store. Marshal Nye of whom
Bhe
made the
purchase having some misgivings as to what she might do with the drug, spoke to her brother George about it, but being informed that on account of nervousness brought on by an attack of spinal menengitis a number of years ago she had to resort to anesthetics to get her usual rest, he thought no more of it. Tho folks at home, however, knew that although Lillie had used opiates of various kinds they had never known her to take morphine. Although she appeared more bright and cheerful Friday evening and part of Saturday it never entered their minds that as she waB inexperienced in the use of tho drug mentioned she was liable to take an overdose.
Saturday afternoon she spent in her room and when supper was announced complained of not feeling very well and did not care to partake of any eatables before morning. Before the maid retired at 9 o'clock, upon tbe request of Mrs. Durham, she went to Lillie's room and found her sleeping quietly and did not disturb her. Geo. W. Hadley had came over from Indianapolis to spend Sunday with the family and it was near 11 o'clock before thoy retired. Before Mrs. Durham sought her room she wont up-stairs to her daughter's room, as was her usual custom. She found the light blowod out and Lillie breathing heavily. She quickly summoned George and Mr. Hadley to the bedside.
They found her breathing very irregular and her pulse almost gone, a boy was hastily dispatched to town for a physician, but it so happened that a number of physicians where the messenger called were not at home, and when Dr. Barcus finally arrived he found Lillie beyond recusitation. She had taken more of tho drug than her naturally delicate constitution could stand and the poison gradually eat away at her vitals till life slowly flitted away as a vapor of th© morning.
It is a singular coincidence that the day of Lillie death was the eighth anniversary of her marriage to John CWampler. Although they had not lived together for a few months, past differencosjhad been forgotten and it is said they had arranged to go to housekeepiug again in a short time. It was at first hintod that the morphine was taken with suicidal intent, but tho only intimation of such a thing is in the facts that follow. For more than a month Mr. Wampler had been arranging to pay his father a visit at Lincoln, Nebraska, and ho had all his plans fixed to leave at noon on Sunday- It sooms, however, thai Lillie wjib rather averse to his going. And when sho was down town on Friday sho called at the Btoro to leave some nresonts sho "wished to send to her father-in-law. During her stay she again expressed her dislike at seeing him go, remarking that she might never see him again.
This, then, is tho only evidence pointing toward suicide and wo give it for what it is worth, preferring to let the final judgment disclose matters of which we of tho present have no need to know.
Tho funeral service was conducted at tho family residence at 2 o'clock Monday by Dr. Tucker, assisted by Rov. G. W. Switzer, and interment at Oak Hill.
Death From A Barkiner Dosr-
On Sunday about 1 o'clock JameB Park, who lived on John L. Davis' farm south of the city, was riding along in a road cart on Wabash etroot. When opposito the house of Mrs. Hattio Dixon a little dog came storming out and frightened tho horse. He made a sudden lunge forward, throwing Mr. Park backward out or his vehicle. He held fast to the lines ind it is 1 bought this drew tho animal back to where ho fell. He received injuries that resulted in death at 11 o'clock that night. Mr. ParK was picked up and carried into tho house of Mr. Reproglo and Dr. Thornberry summoned. Upon examination it was found that oilhor tho fall from tho vehicle nr tho slu-lit kicking of tho horse in warding of the snapping of the dog at his heels had produced concussion at tho base of the brain. The injured man begged to bo taken homo that he might die with his family if it should come to that, and he was accordingly taken homo by f)r. Benofiel in the evening. r. Park was thirtyeight years of age and leaves a wife and three children, two of whom are almost of ago. And so a man's lifo is sacrificed by a beastly little cur, who we] are pleased to Btate has since been killed by Marshal Brothers.
Stick to Tour Text, Brethren. Ihrough his failure to stick to the text at the close of his speech at the temperance meeting Sunday afternoon, T. E. Ballard stirred up a hornet's nest among the preachers and students, that reflected little credit on those participating. In referring to the various forms of immorality in the community he spoke of foot ball, and the game commenced. Mr. Ballard had hardly parted the skirts of his Prince Albert and sat down before Dr. Tucker was on his feet and began scoring tho game, in a fashion that made tho students wince and grow uneasy in their seats. His speech was almbst a ropititionjof an editorial in his church paper of last Saturday, only greatly emphasized by some sweeping gestures. Rev. Inglis and some of the students defended the game, and so it went until Mr. Tucker made a dive for his hat, and hastily left the room. A number of persons who had gone there to hoar only temperance dit.cussod become disgusted and went away before the meeting closed. All of which, we fear, goes to chow that the cause of temperance has received a setback by tho failure of one man to stay by his text and otharmen failing to control their temper.
Does He Live Here?
The Enquirer of Sunday contained the following dispatch from Pomeroy, Ohio: "There is considerable anxiety in Pomeroy about a land speculator who has boeen .here. He gavo his name as John C. Fulweider, of Indianapolis, and flourished a volumninous business card. He was playing tho role of a land speculator looking up titles and making investments.
He bought considerable property of James A. Daugherty, of Racine, and gave checks with a liberal hand, which have come back protested, and hence the anxiety. Those who think they were landed in Fulweider's net are: Prosecuting Attorney Hecox, Treasurer Hartingor and John Bradford. It is not positively known that there is anything very seriosly wrong with the transactions, but it looks very much that way."
An individual of the same name, at one time, lived here, but moved to Indianapolis ten or more years ago, and it may be tho same individual who has been cutting such a wide swath at Pom-
Six Years in Bed from Neruous Prostration. II aiitkokd City,Ind., June 8,1893. —Dear Gents:—1 received a letter from you May 27, stating that you had heard of my wonderful recovery from a spell, of sickness of six years duration through the use of South American Nervine and asking for my testimonial. 1 will gladly state how 1 was delivered from my extreme pain and suffering. 1 was perfectly prostrated and helpless for six long years, could not rise from my bed, stand upon my feet nor walk, I was treated bv many of the best physicians lor many miles around and all agreed that 1 would never leave my bed. At last I lost the use of my body and had to be lifted like a child. A part of the time I could read a little and one day 1 saw your advertisement in a paper and concluded to try one bottle. Its effects were wonderful in relieving restlessness and pain. I soon could rise from my bed and take a few steps by being held. After 1 had taken five bottles I was strong and well and able to be out canvassing for foreign missions. My friends could scarcely believe that it was me, I am sure South American Nervine is the best medicine in the world. It was a God send to me and I believe it saved my life.
