Lew Wallaoe at Shiloh.

Gen. Lew Wallace was asked by a representative of The News if he had read the article in Friday's issue of last week concerning the part he took in the battle of Shiloh, He replied that he had, and that it was absolutely correct. •When asked if he saw General Grant on Sunday night after his arrival at Pittsburg Landing, he replied: "No, I had my orders to take my position on the right of his army and did so. The following morning General Grant rode out to my division, and I asked him if he had any special orders to give me as to themanner in which 1 should open the light, and ho said only to move out in that direction, moving his hand toward the rebels, and to use my own judgment after that." "Did he tell you Buell's army had arrived and was then on the field?" "No I did not know that Buell had arrived until after dinner, when I saw the troops on my left waver as though they were going to break and stampede. They were instantly halted and put through th9 manual of arms while under a heavy fire, then at the word 'forward'they went for the rebel column ahead like veterans. It was a movement so unusual, and executed in a manner so admirable that I wanted to know whose troops they were and the name of their commanding officer. I sent an aid with my cctmpliments to the commander, asking what troops they were. The aid returned with the compliments of Colonel Willich and said it was the Thirty-second Indiana Volunteers. I wondered how the Thirty-sec-ond could have got into our army and directed the aid to return to Colonel Willich with my compliments and learn to what army they belonged. Back he came with the information that they belonged to General Buell's command, Army of the Cumberland. That is the first I knew of the presence of Buell's army on the field. I have always wondered that General Grant did not tell me that morning that Buell's army had arrived and was on the field. It would have been glorious news to all of us and wculd have inspired everybody with confidence, and made a wonderful difference in our fighting, though we did our level best."—Indianapolis News.

The Midland Again-

A special frem Brazil to the Indianapolis Sentinel says: "Dr. Moore of Irviugton, general superintendent of the old Midland, now known as the Chicago Sc. Southeastern, with Anderson and Brazil as terminal points, assures the interested public along the line from Waveland to Brazil that the work of putting in the bridges on this end has now been begun in earnest and will be prosecuted to completion with no further suspension of work, and that the whole line will be in operation before the snow flies. The track is within a half-mile of this place, a good depot having been built here nearly two years ago. There are several short gaps in the bed and track between Brazil and Sand Creek, which we are assured are to be closed up at once. This is not the first time such assurances have been given and we are all awaiting developments in the hope that it is coming this time. Brazil needB and wants the road-

Seriously Injured.

While engaeed in hauling goods from the fair grounds last Saturday, Jauiee, the little son of Jeff Hamilton, fell from the wagon between the shafts and under tho horse's feet, Tho fall frightened the animal and he kicked the boy in the face as he fell and both wheels of the wagen passed over his body. His face and head were terribly lacerated and he was carried home in an unconscious condition. Dr. Keogan was summoned and the lad is in a fair way now to recover.

Work of Thieves.

On Thursday of last week thieves got in their work by looting several houses just east of the city. Of course everybody was at the fair and the robbers held full sway until frightened away by Jere Chad wick who chanced to pass by the residence of Miss Allie Line while the burglars were at work. Prom the residence of Truitt Wilson some silverware and other movable booty was taken. Miss Line lost $40 in money, a valuable watch and other jewelry. A number of other houses were entered and suffered more or less.

More Pettit News.

"I met Rev. W. H. Hickman on the train. He spoke of the Pettit case and characterized Col. DeHart as a Lord Chesterfield sort of a fellow, and called Kumlor "the man with a theory." "Did you tee Fred W. Pettit?" was asked. "Ves, Pettit, when I got permission to see him, was seated on a bench in the kitchen of the hospital between two others eating supper. When he saw mo he glided out with his striped pants and no coat. I had heard considerable about his condition and noticed him closely. The large bones of his cheek protruded, and he is very slender, weighing about 125 pounds. His large noso looks very much larger than usual. His voice is husky and wheezy. He certainly has the appearance of a man with consumption, although I did not hear him cough. I asked if he ever heard from hii little daughter, Dine, and he said only indirectly. I asked him what he did and he said, "Lie on the cot and read." He takes the papers and seemed to be better posted on current topics at Lafayette than myself. He has not given up hope of a rehearing from the supreme court soon, but does not speak in an over confident tone. He has been disappointed too often. If I am any judge, however, I do not believe Pettit is in danger of dying with consumption within six months although he has the appearance of a man with that disease. If guilty, he is surely suffering all the tortures that justice could wish, and if innocent (as he claims), 'tis one of the sadest cases of human suffering the world has ever known."—Lafayette Courier.

A Narrow "Escape.

Uncle Jack Kerr is about again but a very sore man, not politically or financially, but physically, having made the hardest fight of his life with an old sow which he was endeavoring to move with a litter of pigs. The enraged beast got the old gentleman down and literally chewed him into mince meat, although no bones were broken. The old sow got upon him with all feet and bit and gashed his arms, breast and back in a horrible manner, but Mr. Kerr waB game and pounded the sow over the nose until she finally left him, when he crawled to an old straw stack where be remained until late in the evening, managing to get home where he was put to bed. He is able to be out again, but has the marks aDd bruises as evidences of his fight for life. He Bays he could have whipped any two men in the county that day, so strong was his desire for life, but at times he thought his time had come.—New Richmond Enterprise.

A Plucky Eider.

The pluck of a little jockey last Friday evening prevented what might have been a fatal accident during the running race at the fair grounds. Just at the start of the first heat the bridle and saddle on the horse Grover broke and the little rider was left entirely at the mercy of the will plunging horse. All the horses were in a bunch and running at terrific speed. To jump or fall off the boy knew meant instant death BO ho clung to the horse's neck and leaning over and grasping the rings of the bit rode the entire half mile in this position and finished third in a bunch of five horses. It was a terrible scene and the hearts of the thousands of spectators almost stood still during the wild ride. He received a hearty roung of applause from the relieved crowd when it was all over.

The Herculese-

Brown township will probably present a candidate on the democratic side of the political arena for county treasurer. The Enterprise is not authorized to mention any names but can assure the voters, irrespective of party affiliations that should this one favorably spoken of, become a candidate, it would take a man of more than ordinary calibre to down this Brown township Herculese.— New Richmond Enterprise.

Do please enlighten an anxious public who this "Brown township Herculese" is, as no one in this vicinity knows him—in fact did not know that Brown kept any "Herculese" within her borders, or harbored any of them. Give us the name Osborn that we may prepare the way for this "Herculese" and make his paths straight. Come now, Bob, don't keep up this spirit of anxiety, but give an inquiring world the name of the Brown township "Herculese."'
