Olever Thief Catchers.

A funny thing happened to a quartette of amateur detectives from Waveland last Monday. It seems that a fellow named Carter, had rdbbed a store in Kentucky, and a reward of $100 was offered for his arrest. He located at Ladoga. Jake Simpson, James Day. "Davy Crocket," White and George Gentry, being acquainted with Carter determined to go after him and that big $100, so they chartered a carriage, went over and got their man without any trouble, and started to Crawfordsville to deliver him to the Sheriff. "Davy Crockett" was driving, and as visions of the good old McBrayer that his share of the reward would buy came to him, he grew wildly hilarious, and lashed the horses into a run. This was the priso* nor's opportunity and as his captors had not taken the precaution to put bracelets on him, he quietly stepped from the carriage and scooted for the brush. By the time the team was stopped and the officers alighted their prisoner had disappeared, and they made tracks for home, a badly sold crowd of thief-takers.-—Waveland Independent.

12.—

A daring attempt was made to rob the American Express Company's car on the Big Pour near the Crawfordsville Junction last night.

As the east-bound train pulled out the messenger, C. W. Julier saw half a dozen men about various parts of the car on the outside. The train was moving slowly and only about 200 feet from the junction. He yelled at them to get away, but they advanced upon him. drew his revolver, and a couple of men did the same.

So the

One of them attempted, so'Julier states, to enter the car and he shot him in the side. The rsst fell back and.ran acrosB the fields.

This 8t*ff is about on par with most of that sent from this city to the associated press, but as they must earn the 25 cents it is necessary probably to make a "showing."

Aug. 14.—Discount was

quiet during the week at 4 for three months and 3 for short- sight. The Hank of England's reserve is now £14,500,000. The withdrawal of another £!,000,(i!!o from the bank will probably be regarded with equanimity, but anything- beyond that amount is almost ceitain to cause the bank's rate to be advanced to 5 per cent. The present situation is a complex one, and it is ditlicult to forecast, the outcome. The consensus of opinion is that the present bank rate will check further serious demands from the United States.

Business on the stock exchange was stagnant throughout the week, owing to the English holiday season and the unsettled condit-'on of the market in the United States. Consols closed }4 lower. Foreign securities were dull. Mexican f.s fell 6'^. American railroad securities were unsettled, thonirh the tendency was somewhat better than last week.

Farm Record. ,.

We have been lately shown an account book, known as the "Farm Record," which for the U9e of farmers is one of the moat convenient works yet originated for keeping the daily transactions of the farm. It contains about 200 pages, all ruled and with printed head lines by which the fanner can keep an excellent and exact record of hie business from year to year just the same as the merchant or business man. The items of sales of wheat, corn, hay. cattle, poultry, butter, etc., can all be recorded in business like shape, and at the close of the year the farmer can tell exactly justj what he has been doing during the past twelve months. The book is substantially bound. Agents will soon begin the canvass of the county among farm ers for the sale of the work.
