A report has become current that the Vandalia does not connect with the boat line at St. Joseph for Chicago any longer. E. E. Miller, of Sugar Grove, comes smiling to the front as the most success" ful wheat raiser in that neck of the woods, having threshed 20 acres of wheat that made an average of 35 bushels. Three and a half acres of Red Clawson made 125 bushels, nearly 40 bushels per acre, and 314 acres of the James Fife variety made 109 bushels.—
New Richmond Enterprise.
Two years ago John H. Hardebeck and George Keyton, Howard county farmers, declined to take 98 cents for wheat and each stored 1,000 bushels in an elevator to wait for $1 per bushel. When the market reached that figure they still held on, hopeful of sufficient increase to defray the expenses of storage over and above 91. The wheat is still in the elevator, and should they sell at present rates, deducting cost of storage they would receive but 15 cents per bushel.
George Dillman made an assignment this week, with W. T. Whittington as assignee. It was done to protect his mother, who had loaned him money to carry on his business. His assets are more than the liabilities, and he will get the insurance on that part of his stock that was damaged by fire and water, so that he hopes to be in business again soon. The greatest difficulty is to find a room, as there are no empty business rooms in town at present.—W uvelainl Independent.
Eeturn of LaPearl-
It is a matter of great pleasure that we are able this week to announce to our readers that J. H. LaPearl and his celebrated company has at last been able to give us a return date. Mr. LaPearl is a Crawfordsvillian in every sense of the word and his phenomenal success the present season through Illinois and Southern Indiana is most gratifying to his many friends. LaPearl has, beyotid doubt, the greatest 10 and 20 cent show on earth and is far superior to many 50 cent concerns now traveling. The company is now traveling in its own special cars and is one of the best equipped shows on the road. Mr. LaPearl will be with us two day6. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 16 and 17, giving two performances daily. On Wednesday night seven members of the company will be initiated into the mysteries of the Knights of Pythias, taking all the degrees in one night. Mr. LaPearl and his company will no doubt be tendered an ovation on their return.
A Disastrous Failure.
The failure of the Indianapolis National Bank a few days ago seems to have been much more disastrous than at first reported. The assets will not near pay out the liabilities, besides this the stockholders are responsible for an assessment equal to the amount of stock subscribed. R. B. F. Pierce, formerly of this city held stock to the amount of 820,000, and Gen. Lew Wallace §7,500 Besides losing their stock these gentlemen may be assessed aB much as their stock amounted to pay depositors. The indications now are that they will be compelled to pay at least 50 per cent, in assessment on their stock. The President, Haughy, seems to have managed things very badly in making loans, besides being cursed with one or two extravagant children who knew not what money was for except to throw away.

Not a republican applied but the following democrats availed themselves of the opportunity, Parker Willis, Milton UlcKee, Howard Griffith, A. W. Stout. William Price and Miss Martha Hiatt Brown. The men who took the Roachdale and New Ross quartette to Whitesville Thursday night to be tried, speak in glowing terms of the utter slowness and lack of ability possessed by Justice McGilliara. ring thore could
be no doubt. In fact racing without pools reminds one very much of a Fourth of July without powder, yet the local fair association, is the language of one of the directors "would rather disband the organization than to permit it." Paul Hughes, who is very much in favor of pool selling, brought the matter before a meeting of the directors last Saturday and received such a squelching that he wont forget it for many moons. When a vote was taken on the measure it was defeated by a vote of 20 to 3.
