Sept. 1th. Mining i« bein^ eomlupted on the 'Oamoth uhd bfid waters of the Trinity rivor. Whit# nicn are not allowed to minn on the reservation, which ia twelve milee aquare. It is all mountains except the little vallny in which the acliuol ih located. Leaving iho valley on the morning of tho 8th, with no company but a faithful horse,' we reached the ranch of Thomas Bair by noon. Following a trait for fifteen or twenty milee over mountains, in lonesome to an eantern tenderfoot, but we enjoyed the trip on account uf the grandeur of the scenery. Mr. Hair is a wealthy and, if it was not" to avoid tantolo^y, we would say, infljentiul man, who begau bv driving a pack train, but soon owned the train, a larye ranch, property in Areata, and is president of fee bank of Areata. In the uttornoon we went to the summit of Bald moun tain and stopped over night at tt pluce called Acorn, about 5,000 feet above the sea level. The next day we wont to Areata, a town of 1,000 inhabitants, and the oldsBt towa in the Humboldt country, it ia laid out in good style, streets running at right angles, and a plaza, which was intended for the court house, as it wai, at oae time, the county seat. It has been overshadowed by its younger sister across the bay, Eureka, a city of 5,000 inhabitants, which is now ths county seat. We were shown through the court house and introduced to the county officers. The court house is a larger and liner building than we have at Crawfordsville. We were also shown through the jail, which has but little that would rscommend it. Among the prisoners was one who was to pay tke penalty of his crima of murder, July 4th, on the gallows. Humboldt would make seven counties as large as Mont gomery,. and has a population of 25,000. and would be a good place for spinsters, as the census shows 4,000 more men than woman. Some of the large mills are closing or shutting down, throwing hundreds of men out of employment. Many who, if they had ths means, would go east. We met Mr. Hooker, who has a large sheep ranch, on ths Redwood. He says they cannot get but 13 cents for wool and: can get no money from the banks. As an example of the products of these ranches, we note one of 1,800 sheep which produced 340 lambs and the sheep sheared twice a year with 2'A to 3 pounds of wool at a shearing. Another of 2,200 sheep produced 423 lambs and the same amount of wool as the other to the head. Some of the ranches have as many as 12,000 to 15,000 head. Most all are heavily mortgaged, many for more than they will bring ia the marketThere is a general complaint of the stringency of money matters The Californian divides the dollar into 8 pieceB, and is never satisfied with less than two as his smallest charges. Notwithstanding the complaint of dull times, the people generally as a class are industrious. We visited many of the large shingle factories and lumber mills of which we will not attempt an account. The manner of working the large timber and get. ting it from the mountains is very interesting. The common school system of California is a good one but differs in many respects from that of Indiana. They have examinations for teachers but twice a year. Each district has three trustees who manage tl^e finance and business of the district. Teachers are better paid in California than in the East, and schools run about ten months to the year. We stopped over night with a gentleman who was one of the trustees of a district on Redwood creek, and lived eight miles from tho school housewhich gave us some idea of the difficulties of attending school in the mounHihi districts. After remaining in Arc«
:i
week, we decided to make an overliii. trip to San Francisco. Crossing tliu i,r 12 miles to Eureka, we took the Eureka and Eel River R. R, which runs south east 25 miles through a rich and diver sified country. The R. terminates at Burnell's at the foot of the mountain. A mile up the mountain is Hydesville whore we took tho stage which carries tho overland mail for 160 miles to Ukiah, Mendocino county, Starting from Hydesvillo at 6:30 p, m„ we reached Blocksburg at o'clock next morning, a distance of 50 mileB. The driver was an old man who Had followed the business of miniug and staging for many years. He even claimed to have driven on a section between Cincinnati and Indianapolis before the days of railroads, and at one time had made his home at LaFayette, Ind. Making changes at Harris, Bell's Springs, Cumming, Sherwood, spending another miserable night in the stage, we reached Uriah at noon of the third day, Our trip had been over mountains altogether, the road in many I places being but little wider than the stage. We enjoyed the scenery in the day time. Deor and jack rabbits were plentiful, and we saw many on the way. The eating houses at the stations had but little to recommend them, and their rates higher than their altitude above sea-level. Ukiah is a town of 2,000 at tho foot of the mountain and in a beautiful valley. The therntometor registered 125 degrees in the sun the day of our
