The South Side savings bank is a small concern wi.ose capital was about SI00,000. At the time of the Hankington failure it was subjected to serious strain but pulled through. The struggle at that time, coupled with yesterday's failure of the Commercial, with which it was indirectly associated, was too heavy for it to stand. The Milwaukee national, of which C. J. Brad ey is president, had a capital 8250.000 and was considered one of the soundest institutions in the city. Its failure has created much surprise.

OTHE commercial persistence of the American is illustrated by the effort to introduce the use of corn as food in Europe. Formerly it was insinuated into the digestive apparatus of the old world in the form of pork, but objection having been raised to that in some countries, the scheme is now to give them the raw material in its simplest form.
