JULY 29, 1893.
THE GEE8HAM 0ASDIDA0I. Washington letters to newspapers intimate that a feeling is giadually being worked up among a few prominent do« ocrats favoring the candidacy of Hon. Walter Grcaham for President. This will amount to nothing. It is premature and would be premature in ten years from now. A candidate to secure the united support of the democracy of this country must have the principle "born and bred" in him. We have the highest opinion of Judge Qresham, both as a citizen an'I a statesman. He is, we believe, incorruptible, is a gentleman who has always filled official positions with honor and ability, yet in spite of this he could not on account of hia late political tenets receive the united party support. We all remember the Qreely nomination of 1872. It was a very impolitic scheme and was conspicuous for
failure—the irt-mru.toue de
feat of the nominee. Mo one questioned the honesty and sincerity of Horace Qreely, yet he was not the choice of the democracy and was ruthlessly slaughtered. He was too young in the faith and the Cause of democracy, and the party repudiated him. So tirould it be with Grcsham. He coalil not osury the party strength now, and not for a long time to come. He is too yeung a con vert—the party would demand an older worker in the cause. He must tarry seme years yet in the vinyard. The rriends of Gresham are on1theright road to kill him off politically, by thui early canvassing his name for the next nomination for President.
Tin same thing that causes such a variety of opinion among the people over the present financial depression, and how the money interests of the country should be regulated, will be found in Congress during the ensuing extra session. Congressmen are as much divided as the people, each member being more or less controlled by the views of the people of his district, while their knowledge of finance ie but little better than that of most of their constituents. We believe, from present indications that Congress will do but little in the matter, and most of the time will be spent in useless wrangle over the subject. It wouid be a pleasing fact if it would get down to business promptly, Out it is extremely doubtful if it will.
A TIPPEOANOI county man who owns two farms says money can be made in the sale of wheat even at 60 cents per bushel. He may think so but would have an uphill job in convincing farmers generally that this is true While the cost of putting in and gathering the crop is not near so expensive as a few years ago it will be difficult to see where there ie any profit in it at 50cents. Will -tome of our farmer

THE Judge of the Circuit Court of L.ake county, the county in which Roby is located, it is said has vowed that be will take a hand in suppressing the prize fighting and horse racing business, since neither the Governor nor Sheriff seem able to do it. In the Roby business the Governor has shown himself to be too much of a blowhard, and the Sheriff is probably a coward, and if a determined Judge will take bold and see that the infamy is suppressed full credit will no doubt be given.
PARKE county has three murderers in jail at this time, the crimes for which these men are incarcerated having been committed within the past six months, i'he county for years has had a bloody record, and is not properly located. It should adjoin Jackson or Lawrence county where murders are common and whert White Caps abound to take a hand in crime occasionally.
SIM COT seems to be a prominent figure in Indianapolis in spite of both republican and democratic newspapers to kill him off politically. He has served as councilman for several years, and is again a candidate and will be elected. Coy seems to be a shrewd, natural born politician, cun carry any load they put on him and get through successfully.
JUDOINC from reports, cities not in the highly favored gas belt are getting along fully as well if not better than many booming towne. At Kokomo, Elwood, and other cities hundreds of laboring men have been thrown out of employment and their condition in many cases is pitiful. Towns not boomed do not have this condition of things.
THAT highly ornamental but very generally useless organization known as the state militia, could be put to good use just before the coming mill at Roby between Corbett and Mitchell takes place, by running tho entire gang of fighters, seconds, bottle holders and all into Lake Michigan.
INDIANA AT THE FAIR Some considerable criticism has been indulged in at the somewhat puny display made by Indiana at the World's. Fair. Why-this is so we cannot sjty, but owners of material of all kinds necessary to exhibit the productions of Indiana, are probably the persons alone on whom the critieisms shall fcll. They pefhap* failed to take proper interestia the matter. The state contributed $130,000 out of the treasury for Indiana at the Fair. This was, and is enough for the taxpayers to give. An interested ring of politicians worked zealously to get the legislature last winter to give $100,000 more than was paid, but it was not successful, and it iB perhaps from this gang that the criticisms about the meager display of Indiana productions have originated. The gang just simply wanted to steal by legal means this additional sum from the people but could not. The state's display would not probably have been an iota more creditable than it is now, had the additional sum demanded have been given. It is better to have a slim display than to enconrage a lot of treasury raiders and in the end the state is the gainer.
IF the present depression in business is due to legislation, who is lesponBible for it?
Senator Turpie expressed the situation concisely in hiB speech Tuesday evening at Indianapolis, when he said: "The times we are enjoying are strictly republican times and thp republican party is responsible for thein. All laws concerning trade, commerce, revenue, taxation and money are statutes which were placed in execution under republican administration. Only a few weeks ago the last provision of the McKinley bill went into operation and to its effects can be traced much of the troubles which go to make up the hard times. The Sherman act is the law of the land to day, and this is the law that has caused ah extra session of congress to be called fot its repeal. By it a given amount of silver is purcham-d by the government for-the cold storage in the vaults of the treasury.
COHGBXSSMAN BYNUM expresses the belief that one of tbe chief causes of the present financial flurry is over speculation. He says that the trusts have overdone the business, and that among others the whisky trust, he brewers' truBt, cordage trust, etc..
sold
out to
European investors at about ten times the value of their stock Tbe foreign investors are now beginning to realize that they were bitten and are unloading stock on thiBmarket. Msn who thought that they were rich find themselvre bankrupt, and it is this which has to a lame extent contributed to the present stringency. We have to pass through a period of liquidation, and this sort of a period usually follows a time when money htif been plentiful and wild speculation rife."
INDIANAPOLIS is exerting itself to entertain in September next the thousands of ex-soldiers who will be in at tendance at tbe national eacam, ment. This is right. A good healthy feeling arises from the proper treatment of these old veterans who are yearly rapid .y decreasing in numbers. The city sensibly determined to entertain these uien at her own expense, after it failed to secure an appropriation from the ftate, and will be entitled to that much mure credit for footing the bills that must arise from the occasioo.
WHILE it would perhaps be very UP wise and impolitic for any Catholio to offer himself as a candidate for
Cuuuijr
office it would no doubt be as equally foo.'isn for any known mamber of the A. P. A to ask the suffrages of large numbers of voters. A man that is prescribed on account of his religious views for any official position is quite likely to remember those who prescribe him, and pay them in the same currency they circulate TbiB is natural, and next year we are likely to witness much of it.
A FEW Btreet crossings are to be laid with the expensive vitrified brick, al though stone is cheaper and just as durable, by the city couDcil. After a season if it can possibly be forced on the owners for use in front of their property it will be done by which means some one can secure a job off of tho people.
THE "moral" element having as it considers won a great victory by having the World's Fair gates closed on Sun day should now return good for evil by giving the exhibition a big support during the remaining three months of its existence. The managers, no doubt, would appreciate this kind of treatment hereafter.
DE PACTW, the well known New Albany glass manufacturer, made an assignment the other day. The same reasons for the failure ot many others during the past two months hold good in DePauw's case—failure to secure accommo* dations at the bank and inability to secure money duo from others.
TZPPKOANOB county is indirectly responsible fer the Roby iniquity. It sent McHugh to the legislature, and he secured the passage of the law which permits such brutal institutions as prize fighting and winter horse racing. That county should take a back seat hereafter.
Turn New Richmond Enterprise says that a prominent oitizen' of Ripley township wilt b& a candidate for Auditor before the ndxt democratic county convention. The irentlsmilin Meant is Bent Shyder, tftf pfresentYrustee of Ripley, a first-classman by the way, too.

Last fall I was taken with a kind of summsr complaint, accompanied with a wonderful diarrhoea. Soon after my wife's sister, who lives with us, was taken in the same way. We used almost everything without benefit. Then 1 said, let us try Chamberlain'B colic, cholera and diarrhoea rejuedy, which we did, and that cured us right away.
