THE ADMINISTRATION NOT RESPONSIBLE. For the present depressed state of business affaire through the country the republican newspapers, sneak like, are attributing it to the administration of Cleveland. This is unfair in every respect. The present laws governing the finances of the country are republican, were passed by a republican congress and officially signed by a republican president. This administration iB simply carrying out laws made by republicans. The Sherman law regarding silver has John Sherman as its creator, and no one seams more anxious to have it abolished than himself. Other financial movements whiuh regulate the business of the country were originated by republioan congressmen. If business is stagnant, money hard to 6ecure and a general distrust pervading the country, whose fault is it? Surely not that of the present administration. It has done nothing to inaugurate such a state of affairs. Eepublican money loapere, capitalists, etc ,. are pleased with any prospect of "hard times." It is money in their pockets. They can get big interest for their money. It matters not what may be the misery created they will thrive on the misfortunes of the masses. Dull times is money to them. This administration hs^ done nothing to make the public distrustful of it. Its movements have been conservative and in the interest of the people, yet for all this if the money loaners of the country cannot control its policy they will aim to create distrust which they are now doing.
THE STATE NORMAL SCHOOLThe plain fact of the matter teems to be that the trustees and faculty of the State Nomal school need a thorough overhauling and a number of them at once relieved from further duty at that institution. Judged from reports the first one to walk the plank should be the President, who seems from disposition and action to be anything but the right man in. the right place. The trustees generally, we understand, are not as a rule thoroughly educated men, are not of the kind to understand the educational interests and demands of the times, but have been placed in charge of the State Normal through political favoritism more th^n from any other cause, and not .from any particular fitness they may possess from an educational point of view. Since the State has to furnish the funds to keep the institution running it is nothing but correct that first-class men in every respect should be placed at the head of affairs.
THE NEW POST MASTER. After some months of anxiety among liumerotis applicants for post master of Crawfordsville, Mr. Brookshire announced last week that he had chosen MrlS. E. Voris, the well-known insurance agent, for the position. We look upon the appointment as judicious, and satisfactory in every respect. Mr. Voris is energetic, reliable, prompt in business matters, conservative in his views, and will bring to the office all the qualifications necessary to jnake a good post master. Business men, whose interests are first to be consulted in the matter of a post master, will be well satisfied that Mr. Voris is to serve them-for the coming four years.
A CORRESPONDENT of the Cincinnati Enquirer thinks that Gov. Matthews will call an extra session of the legislature this winter for the purpose of creating anew law governing the fees and salaries of county officers. This would be a foolish move. The lobby that controlled the last session of law makers would be in stronger force than ever, especially when in the interest of county officers. Every member that could be bought would b9. The last session was composed of man in both in part branches contemptibly corrupt and weak in mental calibre. Nothing can be done in the way of a judicious fee and salary law until new men are elected for the regular session of 1895.
.. 0T0L0NE IJ? IOWA. The most destructive cyclone ever known in Iowa occurred last week in and around the town of Pomeroy in the west part of the State. Houses were leveled to the ground by the wind and 50 persons killed and, fully 100 injured. The'cyclone extended fpr a distance of |S0 miles.. Aid IB being furnished the sufferers.

MEHARRT 6R0VE RESOLUTIONS. It was considered absolutely necessary by. a number of supposed pious,.'God fearing individuals at the 4th of July celebration -at Meharry's Grove, that they must alvnv their condemnation of the opening of the World's Fair on Sundays, and inconsequence a number of them got together up there and among a series of resolutions, passed the following. "We also desire to express condemnation of the course followed by the directors of the World's Fair on Sunday opening, showing disrespect for law, a defiance of proper authority."
The Fair will continue open, however, on Sundays just the same as heretofore, spite of the Meharry Grove resolutions, and will be under the control of just as upright, benevolent and Christian men, no doubt, as those who favored and voted for the passage of these resolutions. The persons favoring these resolutions are no doubt among the best patrons of the trains which carry passengers on Sunday in August and July to the Battle Ground Camp Meeting, where sandwiches, red lemonade, photographs, and other articles are sold on Sunday with the approval of those who oppose Sunday opening of the World's Fair. There are many of them, no doubt, of the sanctified class, who exhibited such untiring zeal in condemning poor Pettit on circumstantial evidence solely, to a prison cell for the remainder of his life, and in their special Christian way rejoiced when the verdict was so announced. Get out, deceitful creatures! You can fool nobody by such balderdash. t.
PENSION REFORM BEGUN. If reports from Washington are to be credited the results of the new administration of the Pension Bureau are not only already marked, but are more gratifying than the advocates of pension reform had hoped for so soon under the existing laws.
Commissioner Lochren has gone to work in earnest to rectify the mistakes and intentional extravagance of Tanner and Rautu, and his efforts have been so effective that it is now said that, independently of any reforms Which Congress may institute, he will make a saving of at least $25,000,000 on Commissioner Raum's estimate for the coming fiscal year.
Commissioner Raum's estimate for that year was a required pension appropriation of $185,000,000. Congress appropriated $165,000,000. Instead of meeting a deficiency of $20,000,000, according to Commissioner Raum's estimate, Commissioner Lochren expects to cover into the Treasury five or six mil lion dollars of the $165,000,000 appropriation. He expects to do this by striking from the pension rolls* those names which.do not belong there and by re* fusing to place on the rolls the names of fraudulent applicants, while withholding a pension from no one who is entitled to it.
A NUMBER of the old time spoilsmen of the republican party in Indiana are hoping to see Harrison re-nominated for President in 1896, and give as a reason their belief in his future election the fact that the situation with him would be similar to that of Cleveland, who, although defeated in the second race, won on the third, and think that Harrison is logically the man to nominate the next time. The situation with Harrison would be entirely different. Cleveland represents reform, and reform will be carried on by and through his administration and that is what carried the election for him in '92. Harrison would simply represent the wishes of the spoilsmen of his party, nothing more, and who would hope to profit pecuniarily by his success in '96, that is the old timers, who are now living in retirement. riii
WE believe here is one of the most remarkable resolutions ever adopted by a political convention. It defined the termB upon which the Rice county, Kansas, democrats would enter into a fusion with the populists. The latter were told they muBt divide the offices in line with the following resolution:
Resolved, That we demand of the populists at the next election part of the hog which is to be killed, and that we must have of the aforesaid porker some part of the meat located back of the neck that we will not be content with jowls any longer, but must have either the shoulder or side bacon.
ONK out of the thirteen candidates for post master of Crawfordsville waB appointed last week in the person of Ed Voris. The remaining twelve can now take time to meditate on the ungratefulness of party leaders and the uncertainty of all human aspirations. It iB also suggested in this connection that some of those who have been bobbing up for anything in Bight in the way of office for the paBt ten years now take a rest and give the public a rest.
POLITICALLY speaking, Altgelt, the Governor of Illinois, is dead. The Anarchists pardon business has settled him permanently. He need not seek the U. S. Senatorship from Illinois, when the next vacancy is to be filled, which is the usual course pursued by exrGovernors, but if he, can even be fleeted hereafter io th^ position of road, supervisor he may consider himself in good luck.
A GovHRNo^ should never allow himself to become so absorbed in any business mattery that,«he cannot take time to examine thoroughly into the merits or demerits of any bill
Gent
to him which
it is aimed shall become a law. Gov. Matthews sees this now no doubt. The Roby iniquity is one instance of this. It became a law by his failure to veto it. In all its meanness it now appears before him and the public, and his failure to.give it the proper quietus is more and more apparent. In fact, the censure of the Governor for his neglect in the matter seems deserved.
IT is remarkable at tbe amount of financial wisdom in this country just now when we are on the verge of a money panic. Every man you talk with knows just what ought to be done to avoid it and just what is needed to prevent it.
THE city dads should, n*w that the brick street business has been abandoned, apply themselves industriously to devising the speediest means for getting the debt of the city liquidated.
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that Contain Mercury As mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when entering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used|except on prescriptions from reputable physicians, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good YOU can possibly derive from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheeney & Co, Toledo, O., contains no mercury, and is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. The New Great South American Sidney Onre. The acknowledged superior cure and immediate relief for all derangements, painfulness and decay of the kidneys or bladder, Bright's disease, diabetes or any complaint that hurts or despoils either of these delicate organs. This new remedy has bee* thoroughly tested by learned physicians and found far superior to any medicine yet discovered for quickly relieving all weaknesses, aches, pains and distresses arising from diseases of any part of the urinary passages. It is a great relief for the old, middle aged and childreh, male or female. It relieves at once retention and pain in passing water, and it is very effective in relieving prostratie troubles in the old, and for nightly incontinence of water in children, or others, caused by weakness of the bladder, it may be worth to many a hundred times its cost. ThiB iB a remedy of great valne to ladies, because they are very liable to weakness and pains peculiar to their sex.
