If a stranger had come to our town last Wednesday and looked up Main street he would have thought he was in Indianapolis. The street was lined with men digging the gas trench.

A Mean Joke.

One of the meanest trickB that ever came under our observation was perpetrated on a couple of Wabash College students this week. On Tuesday evening Brax Carpenter and Scott McDonald left Crawfordsville in a surrey to drive to Indianapolis. They arrived at Jamestown about ten o'clock aad put up at the hotel for the night. Wednesday morning they were awakened by the town marshal who informed them they were under arrest for stealing the horse and surrey that had conveyed them. The boys protested of course whereupon the marshal ezhibited to them a telegram from this city signed by Mart Johnson ordering their arrest for the theft.JJIt was but a few minutes until every person in the town was notified that a'couple of desperate criminals had been arrested and the entire populace turned out en masse to get a peep at them. The marshal was in high feather and paraded the two young desperadoes through the streets and the town put on a holiday attire. By dint of considerable telegraphing the boys finally established their identity and returned to| Crawfordsville. They made vigorous efforts to detect who had played the mean joke upon them without success'and on Wednesday evening returned to Jamestown to get thoir rig and continue their journey. They declare Jthey will make it exceedingly warm for the fellow that sent the telegram if they ever discover him.
