BESPONSIBLE GENTS WANTED
Oold Pacts From an Unbiased Mind. Why don't the commissioners pay the warrant from Judge Harney, in the Pettit case? asked a citizen of the Leader, on Saturday.
Leader coulun't ans*.ver but expressed th-i opinion that possibly the bill was a surprise party to the Board. The Citizen grew quite warm, at what he denominated the Loader's lack of knowledge of what was going on. Then the Citizen loosened his collar, adjusted his tie, and declared that there was no surprise about it. He told the Leader that long before the work was done on this brief Messrs. Anderson and Haywood had an interview with the Commissioners it was not a public seance. At that session the lawyers laid before the board the situation as it existed they wanted to know what position the Board was going to take, for, while they had no doubt of their ability to collect their fees under an appointment from the Montgomery County Court, they did not propose to do any suing they preferred to stay out of the case altogether.
The Commissioners expressed the opinion that this was a matter to be settled by Judgo Harney, and as a consequence it was decided that Mr. Anderson should have a conference with the Judge, and learn what, in his judgment, was the proper courss to be pursued. Mr. Anderson had thiB interview, and after all the facts were laid before him, the Judge announced that he would allow Anderson anC Haywood $2,000 for briefing the case, they to pay all the cost of printing, &c., or he would ollow them $1,500 for their services, and the county pay the printing. The lawyers accepted the former. Then Haywood went before the Tippecanoe Commissioners, and stated what Judge Harney proposed to do. One of the Commissioners wanted the lawyers to accept $1,500 and bear all the expense, which offer was declined. It was finally agreed between the Commissioners and Mr. Haywood, said Leader's informant, tnat the lawyers were to go ahead with briefing the case that they were to be allowed for their services by the Montgomery County Court, and reimbursed by Tippecanoe County. There could not have been any surprise about the bill, so far as our Commissioners are concerned, for they knew all about it before it was incurred, and if they were not willing to pay the bill, as allowed by Judge Harney, they could nave said so before the work was commenoed.—Lafayette Leader.
White Bronze Monuments.
During the past twenty years or more it is noticed that monuments made of white bronze seem to be coming to the front and are taking the places of those of marble and granite. In almost every cemetery of the country from one to a score of these monuments can be found. There isa good and sufficient reasons for this. They are generally Bpeaking much more handsome and neater appearing than monuments of granite and marble, and there is no question as to their durability. They will last longer and retain their original appearance much better than those of stone. Moss and dirt will not adhere to them, as in stone. The metal is compound largely of sine, to which is added small quantities of tin and copper, Several of these monuments are to be seen in various cemeteries in and adjacent to town, one in particular in the West cemetery, two miles north-east of town, which attracts very general attention from the artistic and substantial features which predominate its exterior. It is the Clark monument to which reference is made. It is over eight feet in highth, on the four sides has beautiful symbols with proper

SHE PINED.
For the Sleep That Knows No Waking, But It Didn't Work. Mrs. Hattie Corey made a vigorous yet ineffectual effort to quit this vale of tears last Fridaj night at the home of her parents on north Walnut street. She chose the popular morphine route because it was offering special World's Fair rates, and if it had not been for the timely arrival of Dr. Keegan and his stomach pump it is more than likely she would have gone right through without change of cars. Hattie recently obtained a divorce from her husband Harry Miller and has since been leading a pretty merry life. She has been on excellent terms with a certain young gentleman of the town and it said that a recent fracture in their friendship led to the rash act. Under the watchful eye of Dr. Keegan Hattie is getting along nicely and is able to be out on the street.
Got Off Easily.
Last night at 8:15 o'clock in the Circuit court, a jury in the case of the State vs. Philip McCauley, indicted for assault, with intent to murder ex-Priest Rudolph, in the Grand opera house riot, last January, returned a verdict of simple assault, and assessed a fine in the sum of $200. This verdict not being in accordance with the statute, which provides that the fine on such a finding shall not exceed the sum of $50, Judge Langdon re-instructed the jury as to a proper form of verdict, and the twelve retired again for deliberation. They were in the box onoe more in ten minutes, with the fine figures changed from $200 to $50, and the verdict was accepted by the court with due dignity, and by the friends of the defendant assembled with suppressed satisfaction.—Lafayette TimeB.
