UANDIDAOY OF LAMB.

Gossip continues to assert and there are some indicatioDB pointing in that direction, that Hon. John E. Lamb is quietly aiming to overthrow Brookshire by which ho himself may be .uominated next year for Representative in Congress. There may be nothing in this, and it may be only gossip. From the experience and results of the past we had considered Lamb possessed of too mucn shrewdness in political matters to seriously entertain the thought that he could be again elected to Congress from this district. It counts for little what may be the future success or defeat of Brookshire for Congress, it is certain that Lamb under any circumstances cannot ever be elected from this district. The democracy do not like him, and they demonstrated this in 1886 when he waa defeated by 1,200 majority in this democratic district. They will do so again if opportunity offers in a like race, as Lamb has not improved with age. Socially, morally, and in many respects politically he is abhored by hundreds of taen in his own party, and in Montgomery county alone there are 500 democrats who would scratch his nane at the polls. There are other counties which would express similar feelings. Whatever may be the wisdom in the opinion of some in re-nominating Brookshire the substitution of Lamb for him would be the highth of foolishness in every way it can be viewed. Brook shire has proven himself a winner in three races for Congress, the last two being highly creditablo to him for the great majorities received. His course in Congress has certainly been satisfactory to tho rank and file of the party, whatever way it may have been received by some scheming politicians and republicans. If not Brookshire for the next nomination assuredly it should not bo Lamb unless the intention be to turn the district over to the republicans as in 1886. Relating to the next Congressional race in this district the best advice in the fewest words to tho party

"let well enough alone."

POLITIC)AL DEMORALIZATION. Tho sentence of Lavelle, late Auditor of Davies county, to a long term of imprisonment in the penitentiary, with other conspirators, for aiming to destroy tho records of tho county by firing the court house, is a fitting instance of the demoralization often created among men desirous of holding office and becoming prominont in politics, and the final ending of his political career will be a warning of great benefit to many ambitious young men seeking official positions all over the laud, in that it will demonstrate to them that honesty must prevail in politics as in everything else, if the person seeking position is to be permanently benefitted. Lavelle had resided in his county many years, was prominent in his party for years, was the king bee in all political councils of the party, in fact his, influence was far reaching and powerful for a long period. He was withal considered a "good fellow" as it is defined in politics, was ready with his money and tho influence of the saloons to carry out any political Measure for friends. Ho acquired habits of drinking intoxicants. He waa ambitious to fill a state office and climb higher up on the political ladder. The demands wero heavy on his purso. He began to do crooked work while in office and was suspected, arrested, tried and condemned. Many another "good fellow1' in politics has had as equally demoralizing a career before dropping the business. The example to young men desirous of shinning in politics is simply this: If the constant expenditure of money, the consumption of much whiskey by self and friends, the association with the lowest dregs of society, are all nocessary for continued elevation in the political field, then don't enter it. Politics should be on a higher plain in this country than it is. Men of the Lavelle stamp should be driven to the rear and honest, sober and intelligent men forced to the front. Honesty and decency will live longest in politics.

THE treasurer of Bartholomew county lately examined into the mortgage records of his county and found over $600,000 in property that had never been reported te the assessors. The amount was promptly placed on the tax duplicate and 115,000 was received by the county on taxes. This was very commendable in the treasurer but he would not probably have been one-tenth so energetic had he have been a candidate for re-cloctioD.

THE Union League Club, a silk-stock-ing republican club of New York Cityj has said that it wants no Hebrews as members of that organization. This will be interesting news to Hebrews who have hithorto affiliated and voted with the republican party. The democratic party is the party of all the people.

HAWAII.

Indications do not point to a

Bpeedy

admission of Hawaii, ti.o principal of th» Sandwich inlands, mt. tho United States of AiuericH. This administration is not in ouc-half us big a

about it as was that of President liar ri6on's. Had Harrison ivniuiued in power thrue months moro ijawau with its half civilized creatures, su^ar t-pecu-lators, volcanoes and all would have been taken in regardless of tho injuries, benefits or what not to thiB couutry, and all tho official positions upon the island filled with hungry repubheau omce hunters. The admission of Hawaii into tho Union is a very questionable proceeding, and those in authority should think long and earnestly in the matter before determining what to do. Would it be good policy? Does this country now, or will it hereafter need additional territory? If so, would not Canada and Cuba, which adjoin us be much preferable to an isluud in the Pacific ocean 2,000 mileB away? If we aro seeking new territory should not these countries near us bo first looked after? What great advantage to this country would the admission of Hawaii be? Correspondents from Washington City say that Cleveland and Gresham are favorable to the admission of Hawaii. We doubt this very much. We believe sound statesmanship will oppose its admission—because we do not need it and can get along easily without it.

DEDICATING THE MONUMENT. A faction of the G. A. R., but which seemed to control the entire assemblage as their late encampment at Evansville, determined to take no part in the dedication of the soldier monument at Indianapolis in September next if, as the Commissioners had determined, permitted tho figures 1816-48 to remain on the monument along side of those 186165. It is a shame that such ridiculous sentiment should pervade tho G. A. R. that fanatics of the Cheadle stripe should be able to voice its sentiment. The G. A. R. has many sound, sensible men within its organization, but the Cheadle wing of it places it by this action in a very ridiculoui and unwise attitude. The monument will be dedicated all the same and in future ages will stand as a fitting emblem of the •alor and patriotism of all Indiana soldiers of all wars in whicb they were engaged. while this fanatical spirft created by a small quota of soldiers of the last war will be forgotten in a few short years.

OHIO AGO AND THE FAIB. Chicago will do well to aim to curb the hogerish propensities with which she has always been credited, in her treatment of visitors during the World's Fair. The impression among many is that visitors are to be skinned of their money at every hand that altitudinous prices are to be demanded for every thing. The first few weeks will demonstrate the truth or falsity of the assertion. Tho first visitors will immediately report to the outside world any attempts at extortion and their reports if unfavorable will injure to a considerable extent the finaucial prospects of the World'a Fair, for people will shun any attempt at gouging if forewarned. Chicago's future prosperity to a groat extent will depend very much upon her management of the Fair and the treat ment of strangers within her gates.

•BEPUJBLIOAir PROPHECIES. Republican newspapers und orators proved themselves false prophets and great liars. If the democrats won in the election they asserted all the manufacturing interests would be paralyzed, business would at once be stagnated and a panic of "hard times" at once be inaugurated. Since the election over & half hundred of new manufactories have located in thegaB belt of Indiana, and business of all kinds there as elsewhere has shown a steady increase. Republican prophecies in this as in a thousand other instances indicated how little the party knew of the state of the country or the temper of the people

COFFEE.

Several brokers in coffee were reported in New irork laat week as having failed and made assignments. If there is any class that should become "dead broke" it is tho epeculatbrs in coffee. Foi years consumers of tho beverage have been compelled to pay just twice what it is worth. Good coffee at retail cannot be purchased for loss than 30 cents per pound, as much again as it should be. Of course poor coffee can be purchased cheaper, but good cannot. Tho coffee product is manipulated by trusts, and they force the people to pay two prices if they need the article.

THUS far the appointments by the administration of individuals to the various important positions to be filled for the next four years, have seemed to be well choBeri, especially is this tho case in most of the missibns to European countries. The incumbents very generally are intelligent, well educated, and experienced in official affairs, and the country will have no cause to regret their appointment to those high and responsible positions.

I 11. 11. WAIINEK, tho notoii patent medicine manufacturer, was reported as "buste and insolvent ly the daily papers last wtek. If UIB insolvency shail prove a termination of his long winded essays ou "Kidney Cure" that have been published tor years past in most of the weekly papers of the United

Slates then his loss will lib the public's gam to some extent, at least.

AMONG the injster.oubly missing is the tin plate liar of ttie last campaign. The republicans Bay nothing about him since then. He waB perhaps discharged for failing to fulfill his promises, and is wandering uimlessly about hoping for employment under the party in 1894.

Two mysterious murdurs occurred at Indianapolis last week. Arrest of suspected persons followed speedily, of course, yet witn all the powers of the detecti"e force of the city the murderers have not yet been made known.
