LET 'EM RETALIATE.
Because the legislature could not and would not give away §50,000 of the people's money to aid in holding the (J, A. p. encampment at Indianapolis in September next, some friends of the movement are threatening to retaliate by having it held elsewhero this year. 15y all means do so so far as the people outside the city of Indianapolis are concerned. The last legislature, although very generally a contemptible congregation of persons, had sense enough to see, spite of all bull dozing tactics brought ainst it, that to vote the money of the. people for the benefit of railroads, hotel proprietors ami shop keepers of the state capitol, would be a very unwise and unjust proceeding, and acted perfectly proper in refusing to do so. If Indianapolis wants it let her pay for it, and pay every cent that it may cost.
"CONSTANT drops of water wear the rock away'" doubtless thinks Mrs. May, who for fifteen years past at every session of the legislature has presented a bil! for So,000 which 6he claims was due lnr late husband for some architectural designs furnished for the northern prison thirty years ago. Tho claim as horetoforo was disallowed at the session just closed, which is, no doubt, a big hardship to some attorney who probably would receive half of the sum if he had been successful in getting tho claim through. Tho claim, however, will of course be brought up at the next session as usual.
Senator Mcllugh, Of Tippecanoe and Tyler too, So say you
that publishers have not enough money to pay poll tax. As no ono outside of his own township ever heard ot this man before until the voters of Tippecanoe unthoughtcdly thrust him into tho legislature, tho wonder is how he can pay poll tax or even for a square meal. The only way wo can devise that the city treasurer secures the poll tax from this man, this Senator, is by deducting it out of his city warrant when ho cotnes around to get pay for city attorney services. The press of Lafayette should interview the treasurer on this matter.
Gov. FKKD K^EFKLEK in an article in' the Indianapolis Journal a few days ago recounts Judge Gresham's political career for twenty-fivevear6—arepublican always seeking for office, and as often smiting the hand that favored him. Should not wonder if that was not about correct. We have little faith in most renegade republicans who come into the democratic ranks and immediately commence to scheme for office. Some of them experience a sincere change of heart and are honest—most of them, however, are looking after their pecuniary interests. HABRISONWR MAYOS

THR Rockrille Tribune, one of the most carefully edited exchanges that comes to our table, appears this week in anew dress. It has also adopted the advance system ot subscription, which is the only sensible and correct plan to use in publishing a newspaper. No money, no paper, is the true rule to follow. The Tribune ie well worthy of the support of tho democracy of Parke county, which it is doubtless receiving.
DAVID ROACH, as sheriff of the Supreme Court, had, as he supposed, when appointed, an office worth $1,C00 per year, but it is not. An effort was made just before the adjournment of the legislature to have the salary raised from $500 to $750, but it failed. The office as hinted by tho Supreme Court some time since, is really useless, and there is little or no need for it.

Carter Harrison, who has been three times Mayor of Chicago, was nominat°d last week for the position. Two years ago he ran independent and was defeated, also by his candidacy defeating the regular democratic nominee. He seems to be an irrepressible, determined politician with much influence behind him. The opposition to him, however, in hiB own party is very outspoken and positive, and he will, without question, have hard earned victory if he is victorious at all.
