Prof- Coulter's Offer.

As'published several weeks ago it again reported that President John M. Coulter of the Indiana university has been offered the chair of botany at the new Chicago university at a salary of 87,000 a year. He is now getting $5,000. The information came this time from one of the professors of tho Indiana university and he adds that Prof. Coulter will likely accept. Educators like ministers generally go when they have a "call," the "call" being based on the amount of money in it, the louder the "call" tho more the money generally. Prof. Coulter should accept this call of the Chicago University—87,000 beats 85,000, as $5,000 boat $2,000 th# amount ho received from Wabash College.

This was made necessary that the plaintiffs could collect the judgment.

A Journey of Varied Interest..

The tourist, via the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, "J.'he Picturesque Route," from Chicago to Baltimore, Philadelphia and New ork, via Washington, is regaled with views of most varied and beautiful sconcry. From the windows of the comfortable day coaches and luxurious Pullman cars tho traveler is enchanted with a panorama of plains, valleys, hills, mountains and streams. Now you are Hying past a hamlet on the mountain side. Again you Iind yourself rolling into one ot the midland cities, i.r past the historic scenes in the Potomac Valley and if you are at all imaginative, the roar of distinct battles along the Potomac and in tho Shenandoah Valley may bo heard above the noise of the flying car wheels, or you can recall the daring raid of John Brown at Harpers Ferry, within a stone's throw of your train.

It is worth your while to awake at night, as the train speeds along near Fostoria in northern Ohio. Flames of natural gas shoot heavenward, alternately lighting up a humble home, revealing a bit of picturesque landscape or breaking the gloom of forests. To see these ever burning lights is indeed a new experience and at night the weird sight alone is worth a trip over the Baltimore and Ohio, which nffordsto the traveler so many unique and fascinating pictures which go to make up the glories of our own American scenery. The journey over the Alleghanies carries with it the

ORGANIZED OHARITY,

It Meets and Adopts Kules and Regulations. Th* committee appointed to draft articles of association for the Society of Organized Charity met at the Y. M. C. A. building last Saturday and completed their labors. Th articles wero very leneihy'and cover a broad field, but the object of the society is as follows:

To bring about co-operatiorj among all charitable agencies.

By a system of registration to prevent imposture. By securing thorough 'nvestigation and tho most suitable action in all cases.

By obtaining from existing charities the preciso help needed or By giving relief when immediate aid is needed, and when all other sources fail.

By a system of visiting which shall substitute friendliness for alms, and inspire to thrift, self respect, and better modes of life.

By careful study of tho causes of pauperism, and of the best methods of dealing with destitution and degradation.

Under the new regime each household and each business firm would be provided with blank forms for referring unknown applicants for aid to the general secretary. Tramps and professional beggars of all kinds will then have their cases investigated and will be dealt with accordingly. Children will be saved a life of pauperism which always leads to crime, and habits of industry and thrift will be inculcated. It is estimated that each dependent individual costs the community $120 a year. At Tons Haute the society rid the city of 60 dependents in ouo year and therefore justly claim that they saved for the taxpayers the sum of $7,200. Tho cost of carrying on the entire work for the yoar was only $1,100. Similar results might be obtained in Crawfordsville. In Terro Haute the cases of 355 families were investigated and only 115 of them were found worthy, or less than 33 per cant. So it can be estimated what a waste of charity there is in Crawfordsville every year. The new society would work to save this waste. Ample time will be given for everybody to look into the matter and then a public meeting will be called at which it is hoped all classes an I all denominations will bo present to give their hearty co operation.

To my Friends.

As you are well aware that I would not recommend that which I did not believe to be good, I desire to say to all who need a good, reliable, family medicine, that 1 belitve one bottle of Sulphur Bitters will do you more good than any other remedy I ever &aw.—Rf'\ CEPHAD SOULE.

ORK, Feb. 27.—A local paper

says: There is some gossip here among politicians about the Secretaryship of the Senate when that body is reorganized on the 1th of March. It is known that the principal among the avowed candidates is ex-Congressman Benjamin Betevcr of Ohio. While not much noise has been made about it, it is certain that (ion. Lefever has made a pretty careful canvass of the Senate. Naturally lu: is backed by his own Senator, Mr. Brice. and by some of the special friends of the latter among Die party managers. While there are several other candidates, most of those already announced are from the South and as geography enters a good deal into politics it is thought probable that these candidates will not be a! le to nake much of an impression upon the Democratic Senators who will meet in extra session on March 4.
