The cheeky part of tho business is that the hotel is not yet contract ed, but if he finds enough dampliools to send him checks in advance, the building will cost him nothing by the time it is completed.

Is Cronkhite Liable?
Augustus Cronkhite, the treasurer of I Warren county, Indiana, whose tiicht has already been reported, has not yet returned to face his neighbors and 1 bondsmen, buthis whereabouts is known and ho will be homo within a short time,
It, will bo remembered that Cronkhite left home owiug the county of Warren about gt0,000 money ot the county that ho had used in his private business. He I also left property that is variously estimated to be worth from 805,000 to ?S5,000. but the latter is incumbered by a mortgage of about 1*2,000 to 815,000. It is now known also that Crtnkhito and his wife are both willing to turn over to the sureties all his property is to bo placed in the hands of a trustee Cor the safety of the houdsmen the latter aro to assume and pay o(T all the legal liabilities and then as fast as they can sell tho property will reimburse themselves.
PECULIAR POINTS.
ll is right here that a somewhat peculiar point obtrudes itself into this case, if reports be true. Cronkhite, as treasurer of Warren county, claimed the -"'lit last fall to sell certain gravel road bonds issued by the county and bo allowed a commission thoreon. The commissioners refused to permit him to make, this sale and did it themselves, thus saving tho commission for the county. Then Cronkhite refused 1o take the money that these sales realized for tho county. The commissioners insisted that ho should, and he as persistently declined to do so, refusing to have any thing todo with 'tho money. The commissioners then resorted to U'.o Circuit court to compel him to take charge of this money. The decision was against tho officer and he took chargo of it.
Now it is claimed that of the shortage of $60,000 to 128,000 was from the funds raised from tho sale of these gravel road bonds. Lawyers have been investigating the case and represent to them that the bondsmen are not at all liable on their surety for this $28,000, that being monoy that tho commis«ionors themselves, by the aid of the county court, forced upon their principal against hiB wishes and over his protest. In short, they claim that the men who are on the bond of Cronkite are under no legal liability for this $28,000. If thi« yiew of the case is adhered to by the courts and the bondsmou are released from liability f«r nearly one-half of the amount of the shortage, tho sureties, with all of Cronkhite's $60,000 or |80,000 worth of property—less the mortgage for $15,000 and the reservation of about $11,000 by the wife—will come out of their close corner without costing them very much, unless it be loss of sleep over the outlook.
Hear Him Howl.
The action of tho Montgomery count} bar against the proposed union of this judicial circuit with Fountain hasgreat ly incensed Mr. Spence of tho People's Paper at Covington, lie took a day off last week to make the followining delicate thrust at our attorneys:
That the bar of Crawfordsvillc should howl, is more than we can understand, unless it is that they have the full twin,, of our litigants as the judicial district now stands, and pluck them unmerci fully in nearly every eoutl. To change the districts so as to include Fountain county with Montgomery would not add to the fees of Montgomery attorneys, but they would much rather have the district'left as it is with the same counties attached. aM it would give-her at-torneys-greater opportunities to fleece and pluck unfortunate litigants. The fact that Covington has given Crawfonlsviile her brains to manage her municipal as well aB judicial and legal affairs is fully proven in the person of Judge Davidson, llou, F. M. Dice and ex-mayor Tom Stilwell-, all former citizen: of Covington, and who. on their advent in the city Athens have given the city and county more brains than the territory had possessed for year-:, and more wisdom to the bench, credit to ing the bar and renown in the municipal afast fairs of tho city of Crawfordsvilln than they ever before enjoyed, Covington appreciates the stab in the back, and in the future will see that "Covingfon and the regions round about.'" will refuso to extend the helping hand to those r.o unworthy to receive it. Howl on, you coyotes we trust your pastures may not
I be changed that old Montgomery, and Putnam and Hendricks, that join yo on tho east, may continue to furnish lambs sufficient to satlsfv your sheepish propensities.
Purses Not Increased.
At a meeting of the Montgomery county fair directors last Saturday it was decided to apffropriate $2,100 for the speed ring, tho samo as last year and no more. This stingy purso system is a mistake and wo will never have good racing so long as wo aro governed by it.
A resolution was passed endorsing the old State Board of Agriculturo and praying the legislature to repeal the law establishing a now one.
The directors decided to have a colt race every day and will offer special inducements for the same. This will prove quite a feature.
New superintendents for all departments will bo selected.
Gottlieb's Grief.

That they lived together until 18S1 when Francis left his bod and board and skipped to graeu pastures and is now living all by her littlo lonesome

Tho Midland to Muncie.
Mr. H. Moore, traffic manager of tho Chicago & Southeastern railroad, is in the city to-day to consider tho advisability of extendiusr the road to Muncie. The Chicago and Southeastern is what is known as tho Anderson & Lebanon, now completed and extending to within twenty miles of Brazil and passiug through tho finest coal fiolds in the
United States. The eastern terminus is Anderson and the proposition now is to extend east to Muncie. Tho managers of the road have had a representative here prior to tho visit of Mr. Moore, who reported the largo amount ot freight handled at this point aud tho lino pros, pect for business from Muncie. In addition to penetrating the Indiana coal fields the road would muko direct connection for Chicago at Westtield with the Motion, at Ladoga for Louisville with tho same road, and at Waveland for St. Louis via Vandaiia, and at iirazil with tho Evansville and Indianapo lis. Berry's Downfall.
At the death of his mother Cal Borry came into possession of an estate worth several thousand dollars—-to-day he is a chattering idiot and a terror to his wife and child all caused by drink. He has abused his wife at different times and threatened her life often. Wednesday he made an attempt to kill her again whilfc crazed with liquor and was put under bonds to keep the peace, but when released tilled up with whiskey and proceeded to torrorize a defenseless woman. Not long since he put $900 io the bank with the remark that ho only wanted to ive long enough to drink it up. There ia only $334 left and that would have been gone had the cashier of tho bank allowed him to draw it out. His affairs have been placed in the hands of a guardian and thero will be an effort made to save him from further ruin and the wife and child will be provided for out of the remainder of his property.—Waynetown

VIENNA, Feb. (i.—Count Taafe has published the program which he has expected would establish an understanding between the German Liberals and the government. The program is generally disappointing and is unlikely to conciliate the German tactions. It proposes that the questions concerning church, polhce and school reforms be ignored for the present. The Cerman Liberal Deputies declare thei- intention of maintaining their liberty of action, and the other factions will adopt, a similar attitude toward the program.
