ANTI CATHOLICISM AT LAi'AY ETTE.

Some two weeks ago a former Catholic priest undertook to deliver it LaFayette a lecture, entitled, "Why I Left the Romish Church," at the Opera House. There were fully 1.200 people present, but in about a half hour after he had begun, a mob ot persons, broke in on tli# stage, knocked him down, ar.d in consequence the lecture was closed at once and the audience -.vent flying from the house. The members of the mob, it is stated, were Catholics. The lecture was to bo delivered under auspices of the "American Protective Association,"' which made a poor out at protecting the lecturer in this instance. The societyis probably auti-Catholis and since this affair, has increased its membership by hundreds, and proposes to secure the expriest again to talk to them. It is unfortunate both for the city of LaFayette and the Catholics of that city that such an event was permitted to occur. It is calculated to intensify the feeling already existing among mmiy all over the country that the Catholics arc determined, if possible, to overthrow many of the present forms of government, par ticulnrly that system relating to out schools. A criBis is predicted Dy many in this county between the two forces, Catholic and Protestant' and war, war to the knife, to follow. This is a country of free speech and free press, and mu! always remain as such while our present form of government exists. The attempt to suppress the lecturer was wrong, and was not, we believe, approved by the better element of the Catholic church in that city. Had he have been permitted to have finished his lecture, what he said would not have raised one-tenth the feelipg that the interruption of him has.

ME. HOED 0F MAKI0N.

Marion county has an ideal legislator in a Mr. Hord. He dares to think and act as he believes to be right regardless ol cliques, lobbios, or party organization, and no intimidation will work upon him. It pays to bo honest and outspoken in political matters although it does not always lead to success. Policv is the line upon which the averse politician work^, and generally he is under some man or some ring of party managers. "Organized labor" as it is termed, is seeking at (his eesi ion of the legislature to have certain laws enacted in its• favor. Mr. Hord favors it. but likewise demands that unorganized labor should be similarly served. There is just the rock upon which they split the labor people and Mr. Ilord. There is nothing uniair in Air. 1 lord's position, yet the labor folks, growl, threaten, and do all sorts of mean things toward him on account of it. Most of the other members from fear of tbo power of the. opposition to them, are against him: nOt that he not right, but the fear for future political success if they vote and act witii him. Why unorganized labor should not have the same rights aad privileges i'.s organized labor before the law, would lake a profound philosopher to explain, and it would not be oxp-ained (hun. Mr. Hord may be away oil* the road to political honors in the fill lire yet it is vastly morn satisfactory to act conscientiously and independently in a atter lino this above mentioned than' to be trucklers and time servers like

0

many of those "around him seem to be to do right regardless of threats or intimidation. That is the style of politician we most admire, and it is to be regretted that the race of them appears to havenearly run out.

As the «•-"^sion of the State legislature is over half through there is already some talk of up extra session. Tho governor will' f-voice the sentiment of the people if he refuse to call an extra session. There

has been ampla time to f»naet all tho laws arid pass the necessary appropriations, or will be during tho next three weeks. If some of the long winded gillies who do so much talking at every session would lose their power of speech for the next twenty days of the legislature. there will be no necessity for an extra session.

Ui.TJTA republican papers were fearful tliat Harrison, hie term expiring in a few weeks, would not "exercise his prerogative in the appointing of a judge to succeed Lamar, deceased. He has, however. He has appointed Judge Jackson, of Tennessee, a democrat and a most excellent man for the position judging by reports, lie has failed to exercise it just the way they desired.

lni:!ci'. will probably be no amendment to the law regulating the pay of county ofiicers at this session of the legislature, the opinion seeming to be that thoio should lie no tinkering with the present law. County officers who cannot submit to tho present order of things will have to resign,

ONLY 'NEUKSSAEY APPEOPEIATiOflS.

The legislator who opposes ad aypropriations of the State's money, ijot absolutely needed, has the correct views and sentiments of me people thin year. Tlin state debt of i:oar S9.000.0l.HI. must b\ paid. It must come from the pocKets of the tax payers, from thousands of the inhabitants who can illy afford to part with their means. Consequently the member who votes Tor this or tint scheme that, a stall fed lobby may originate, is an enemy of the people, is looked upon with more or less suspicion. A grange organization of Boone count.v lately passed the following resolution and presented the same to its representatives io the legislature. Considering the humble source from whence this resolution originated, there was some disposition to ridicule it among the members, yet it echos the vinw.s thousands of tax payers

Resolved, That HooneCounty Pomona Grange, Patrons of Husbandry ask the Hon. Senator Thomas 10. loyd and the Hon. Representative, Samuel S. Davis, of Boone county, and that they are hereby respectfully requested to use their powu-r and influence Against tinfollowing appropriations: For the G. A. R. National Encampment, at Indianapolis, September, 189 ], for World's Fair, for marking burial places of Indiana soldiers in the s-uth, for Purdue University, for normal school, and all similar appri priations.

CHICAGO'S SCHEMES.

All sorts of schemes are being constantly originated by sharpers at Chiea go to get money out of the outside world before and during the World's Fair. For instance for ?1 they will place your name in a guide so when you SO up there you may find where vour acquaintances are. Several sharps are aiming to invigle publishers to pay 81 per week by which they may become members of a "press association." and be enabled to publish letters from the Fair. The folks that have rooms to rent, also many alleged hotels, are getting in their work by getting tho country buukins to make advance payments for rooms. One individual formerly of this city who has sent out thousands Of circulars descriptive of his hotel, the prices to be charged, and requesting a check from each person addressed to secure them their rooms in his house, it is said has not even yet lain tho foundation for his "hotel," but has secured several thousands of dollars from per sons ho has addressed as advanced payment for board and rooms. Ojr advise is not to pay a cent in advance to any of these people, but wait until the Fair opens, go u[ and risk your chances then of getting what you seek for your money. It will be much more satisfactory to lie present if you are to be swindU d, than off at a distance.

THE JOSE I'll E. M'DuIwUJ) TO0ASE.

The suit of Malcolm McDonald a'ivd otheic to pi.'t i' id" the will of the lat Hon. Jos. E. McDonald. Iniri been in progresb for some weeks, iu th« Hamiltoneounjy Circuit Court at. Noljlepvilli-. The charge of the plaintiffs is that tinwill is foryod. is not: that of tiie-dcceased and intimafo that it was done by or through the connivence: of ins- widow. Mrs. Jusaph'me McDonald, his third wife. Many witnesses have beer, examined, among H-em John M. liutler. his law partner, irk Daniels, law Kt'oderu. two experts on signatures from Chicago, and others. Their general t".Mimon} and belief is that f'he name of McDonald as subscribed to the i\ ill. i-s a furgi-ry. The laintilfs seem fo have the best the ease,, and the ''will*' will nobnbb b5 broken. McDouald left proper! valued at SlOd.OOy, mostly in Indianapoh., real estate.

A iio last week at, i'a -i«-, Texa&. who hao rapt a a four Near-old i^irl, was captured next day snd iaili'ered tlie most horrible death that could be devised. lie was stripped, placed mi a platform, his body pierced all over with hot irons, and coal oil linallv thrown over him and then set en lire. His. sufferings were indescribable. The act partakes of barbarity and the worst form of heathenism. While rape, wo believe, should be made a capital offense and the criminal Buffer death, there are cirtainiy more civilized wa\n in going about it than tho Texas mob adopted. The fewer such punishments aro heard of tho better, especially in any country where they claim to be civilized and enlightened.
