LET INDIANAPOLIS PAT THE BILL Very vigorous efforts art being made to induce th« legislature to appropriate 850,000 to aid in defraying the expenses for the national encampment of the Grand Array at Indianapolis next September. In fact we may say a tremendous pressure is brought to bear on the legislators to induce them to vote tho money of the tax-payers of the state for that purpose. It may succeed, but it is clearly wrong if it should and tho members voting for it will live to regret it. The question of patriotism does not or should not enter into a consideration of the matter, but it is whether a display and encampment which alone will benefit Indianapolis shall be paid for by tho people of other portions of Indiana. Tho same argument that may be used in furthering this state appropriation can be used for any social, religious or eduoational conventioa of the people that might hereafter desire to assemble at tho capital. If the falacious argument is used, and it is no argument at all, that out of regard for the services of tho veterans in former years this should be given for the same reason should the expenses of a conference of ministers at the capital be paid by the state on the ground that they have savod the people from tho devil and hisminnions. Letlnlianapolis pay theentire bill as itshould.

SUNDAY OPENING OF THE FAIR. The In liana legislature has spoken out decidedly in favor of tho opening of the World's Fair on Sunday, and Congress must in a few weeks decide the vexed question. The proposition to close it on Sunday originated with cranks, religious fanatics, Sunday Christians and Monday devils, yet they appear to be quite numerous in Congress, and in spite of the feeling favorabio to the opening of the fair on Sunday among a majority of tho American peoplo, will succeed in keeping it closed on that day.

ELE0TRI0 LIGHT OUST! It cost Marion, Grant county, which vns its own electric light plant, the same as this city, th^ sum of $4,900 for 112 electric lights for 18!)'2. Marion has a population of about 14.000 or nearly twice as many inhabitants as Crawfordsville. Now can somebody inform us what tho 124 electric lights of Crawfordsville cost during the same period. Comparison might bo of much benetit, you know. It is quite evident, however, that such low figures for light don't reign here as in Marion.

That county don't elect anything else but republicans. Mr. C. is paid to be short just about Sii-4,000, and is supposed to be sojourning in a colder climate—Canada. The amount of Cronhite's steal cannot now be determined, but this week it is known that the sum is in excess of Sni.000. How much the sum mentioned will be increased cannot now be approximated. 10xpert accountants are milling a careful exajninalion of the books of thi! treasurer's ollice, but some, days must, elapse before a trim condition of affairs can be ascertained. Cronkite was in the habit of receiving money from heavy tax-pavers and not entering the sama on his book of receipts, although giving acknowledgement of payments to parties from whom he received money.
