RDAOH'S Ofl'lUK.

David Roach, of this city was last week appointed to tbo position of Sheriff of tho Supreme court. The place is worth 81,000 per year to the incumbent has somo perquisites and is a position easily filled and does not occupy one-half the time of tho occupant. We are pleased to see a worthy man rewarded, and for his success in obtaining it ho is indebted to no one here. Ilia own efforts brought him the prize. There were no persons of alleged "influence" to speak a good word for him, in fact such is tho enviote- and narrow-co.itracted plan on which many of the politicians around here are built that they heard no doubt, with anger of his appointment,. Poor men ia search for official positions generally stand as good a show as tho cat in a traditional warm place does to escape. Hero's success to you Roach, and may you climb still higher hereafter.

EX-GOVEUNOR CHASK must feel somewhat disgusted with the republican party by this time and no doubt gladly abandons politics for the pulpit. In his message ho spoke approtingly of the present democratic tax law. This the rads considered very impolitic even if it wiis true and they denounce him for it. Even the state organ, the Journal, goes after him rough shod for his "indiscretion." That tax law was one of the choicest weapons used bv tho republicans in the last campaign, and to have it approved by a prominent republican is something terrible to most of the party.

Chase probably has made up his mind that polities is not his lorte.

BKOAUSI ex-Gov. Gray left that putrid reminisencc, known aw the republican party, some twenty years ago and joined the democracy, the newspapers of that party have "had it in" for him ever since. He seems to thrive very well, however, has dealt the old hulk many effectual blows, and will continue to. Gov. Gray seems to succeed very well at home in whatever of a political nature he undertakes, and has the well wishes of the party.

A MONO all the m-eftil inventions that are needed and which we would be pleased to 6ee in practical operation, would be non-partizan boards to control the benevolent instittiti'-ns of the stale. We have often heard of them spoken of but have never seen any of their workings, and are sure tho inventor would at least be entitled to the thanks of tho people.
