PENSIONS.

On tho first of January there is cm the pension roll fully 1,000,000 names. The appropriation for the payment of pensions which congress is expected to make at the coming session is $80,000,000.

These tiyures are startling says the New York World. They show that tho peusiouers are in the proportion of nearly one in twelve to the Toters of the whole Union. And this for a war that ended oiore than a quarter of a centuiy ago!

They show that the cost of the pension list absorbs mjre than 40 per cent, of the nation's revenues.

The pension list costs $120,000,000 more than the entire expenses of the government in tho year before the war. It has increased $160,000,000 since 1877, when the war had been ended a dozen years.

The number of pensioners on the 1st of January waB almost equal tho regular standing armies of France and Germany combined, which contains 1,040,000 men.

Tho list exceeds by $715,000,000 tho annual cost of the great standing army of overtaxed Germany. It exceeds by $05,000,000 the cost of tho standing army of France.

'I HE OFFICIAL VOTE.

The official vote of tho forty-four States participating in tho recent election has been tabulated, and tho breadth, depth and thickness of tho great Democratic landslide can now be fully realized.

Cleveland carried twenty-threo of the forty-four States and received of tho popular vole fi,f79,724 votes, Harrison carried sixteen States and rsceived 5,144,40!) votes. Weavercarried live

The now sheriff of Marion county now that he has secured tho place, finds it not as big a thing as he had anticipated and in order to raise moro revenue out. of it proposes to test the constitutionality of a portion of the new law governing the salaries of coua'y ollices. It is to bo hoped he will not succeed in erasing any of its provision's from thestatute boots He knew exactly, or should have known, just what tho office would be. worth to him and should not have mad* the race for it if he did not expect to bo satisfied with the salary. is represented as pro

testing against the choice of Mr. Murphy as U.S. Senator by the New York legislature. If so it would seem that he is "pptting in his shovel" where he has no business. As President-elect he will soon have much

more

important matters

to look after than senatorial choice from his State, besides he certainly does not desire to engage in any entangling political alliances just at the outset of his administration. We doubt very much about Mr. Cleveland regarding the New York Senator business with the interest lie is represented.

A GENEROUS GIVER.

Rockafeller, the president of tho Standard t)il Co., and possessed of wealth estimated at fully 8100.000,000, is disposed to be a cheerful giver and benefit the world while he lives in it with his possessions, in strange contrast to Jay Gould, who willed nothing except to the Gould family or immediate relatives. Rockefeller had already given $2,(500,000 to the Chicago University, but last week give 81.000,000 additional, his total gift thus far reaching tho enormous sum $3,000,000.

As our readers already know, Cleveland carried all the pivotal states New York, Indiana, New Jersey and Connecticut, Illinois and Wisconsin were added to the democratic column, and the prospects are that they will remain thero. Ohij, tho home of Gov. McKinlev, camo near repudiating McKinleyism.

Every State carried by Weaver has heretofore beet.1 reliably republican. They are

Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Ne
