A BOMB EXPLODES.
Creatine Terror and Wild Ssones at tho Bobbins HouseThere was quite a lively scene at tho Robbins HOUBS last Saturday morning occasioned by tho explosion of an innocent looking stove poker. The poker was first found in the alley back of tho hotel. It much resembled a gas pipo with the exception that two funny little prongs were attached to one end of it. The cook used it for a long time for an ice pick, but it finally drifted into tho water closet of tho hotel where it was used as a stove 'poker. The fire had been stirred with it more than an hundred times without any bad results and it was voted to bo the best of its kind in tho city. Saturday morning Fred Mills, tlie night clerk, and Bob Thomas, a colored porter, were iu the room when Fred seized the poker and began punching the fire. In a minute a tremendous explosion occurred. While tho men in the office sat stupefied with four Mills came rushing out covered with soot, his clothing torn to shreds and blood running down his right leg profusely. Drs. Taylor and Gott were summoned and dressed his wounds. Throe sharp fragments of iron, pieces of tho stove, had shattered his knee, which will make him a cripple for life. Thomas, the porter, who made his exit through tho back window, received a cut on the side of his head, but it is a miracle both were sot killed. Tho stove was blown into a thousand pieces, all the windows in tho room were broken and soot cov" orad everything. No one could tell the causo of tho explosion until D. W. Cox appeared upon tht scene when it was learned that the quiet little poker was the source ol tho trouble. Last year when the Ben Hur Co. was in the east, Messrs. Cox and Burk purchased soveral old whaling relics, among which were several bomb lances, a pieco of hollow pipe sharpened at one end. They are loaded with powder, shot into the whale and exploded with a fuse, killing tho animal. A couple of these bombs wore taken to Music Hall. In some way one of them found its way into the back yard of the Robbins House with the above result.
"Milkine:" Matters in the Pettit Oage Cencerning the expenses in court of the Pettit case the Lafayette Times says: "I know that—BO far—the trial and conviction of Rev. Fred Pettit, for poisoning his wife, has cost the tax-payers of Tippecanoe county at least f15,000. But the end is not yet. Last week the attorneys for the State—Messrs Haywood and Anderson—went before Judge Harney, of the Montgomery county circuit court, in Crawfordsville, and askbd bim to grant agoodlv allowance for preparing the State's brief—to be presented in the Supreme court.
I am informed that Judge Harney took the matter under advisement. Section 5,659 of the revised statutes of Indiana expressly provides, viz:—'The Attorney-General will prosecute and defend all criminal or State prosecutions that are now or hereafter may be pending in the Supreme court of Indiana.' In 24th Indiana, in the case of Stewart vs. State, page 124, tho Supremo court declared that the Attorney-General has exclusive control ot criminal prosecutions in the Supreme court.'
When the Pettit case went to the Supreme court—on appeal—the State's prosecuting attorneys were done with it, tho Attorney-General taking it in charge, as required by law. By what right, then, are the tax-payers of Tippecanoe county to bo further taxed in this seemingly unending Pettit "milking" affair? I confess it V?eems the people are sometimes helpless against courts— and you and I know tho vengeance of a patient people is eometines terrible!
A Serious Runaway.
Last Saturday afternoon a team belonging to G. W. Hall became frightened in the alley west of Mahorney's store and dashod wildly out into Main street, several pedestrians barely escaping serious injury. In the middle of the street they struck the buckboard of Dr. Ensminger, throwing it high in the air and totallp demolishing i*\ The doctor was thrown a long distance but escaped with slight injuries. The coal wagon was torn to pieces and for a time pandemonium prevailed in the crowded thoroughfare.

A TERRIBLE SAIL.
Two Thousand Mile# In Open Boats in the Pacific. On September 29. 1893, a native fisherman off Nanawalla, Hawaii, saw out at sea what ho thought to be a driftiny log, but 017 approaching it found .".t to be a ship's lifeboat, laying in tho bottom of the boat were twelve men so weak is to be unable to speak, with their tongues swollen and black, protruding from their mouthfc.
Their eyes were sunken and glassy, and they all, though conscious, seemed as if demented. They were unable to iimye or give any account of themEJives until brought to shore by the natives. The story of their voyage, as told by tVe mate, is one of horrible suffering. He said that when they left the scene of the wreck of their ship, the Campbell, from Port Townsend, Washington, he calculated that Hilo was about 0,300 miles away, and that with care and short rations they could make the land sifcly. All went well for a time, the lifeboat making, according to his estimate, about 10o miles for each twenty-four hours. Tho water gave out, however, some days before they were found, aud the sceno became a terrible one. lie and ono of the sailors alone retained their senses. The rest became madmen, and at the last were fighting, shrieking, tearing their hair and clothes, and raving generally. The two managed, however, to keep them from either jumping overboard or drinking the salt water until they became too weak to do so. finally lio-aud tho sailor also gave out, and for two days and nights the boat drifted in a calm sea without any effort to guide or propel her. A friendly current carried them inshore, or they would have all died in tho boat.
A CHINESE PORTENT.
John Plantii Bulb, and Luck Is Foretold In Its Growth. In the fall of the year even the poorest Chinaman hies himself to the proper shop and buys a Chineso sacred lily bulb. The more prosperous Chinese buys bulbs by the dozens. If the bulb, when planted, takes good root, sends up strong, bright green, waxy shoots and bears numerous lilies, that is "faht soy" good luck. If it does not, then all the faht is in the fire, so to say.
There is something peculiarly Chinese about the planting of the sacred lily bulb, because you do not plant it* at alL First you should put the bulb in water, not very cold, for two or three days, change the water twice a day, and wash the bulb at each change. When the bulb is free from its outer skin, and is swollen to the point of bursting you put it in a shallow dish and cover it about half way wfth pebbles or large, clean graveL Cover the gravel with ciewi water and change that once or twice a day. When the plant is started it must have sun and fresh air or It will not flower, only grow pale, sickly stalks.
In San Francisco, where most of the domestic servants are Chinese, the women heads of households are presented with bulbs by the servants. The ladies have no care to take of the gift. Though the household get no breakfast until dinner time, and (lino on the following day, that bulb will be attended to all right If it flowers nicely the family gets pie seven times a week. The flower Is a delicately beautiful whiVs lily with a rich, sweet perfume.
Invulnerable.
At the time of the Crimean war there was in the regiment in which I served a soldier who WAS firmly convinced that he could not be killed by shot, shell or steel.
How he came to imagine this I couid never discover when asked about it he would reply, "No, it's impossible."
This idea led him to undertake the most dangerou-5 duties with perfect coolness, and he certainly passed through the war all right At its conclusion lie received medals for distinguished bravery, and in a few years since he had risen to the rank of captain.
Antiseptic Hypodermic Syringe. A hypodermic s/ringo that can ba thoroughly rilerilized after use is a receht invention of two English physicians. This is effected by means of heat, a small, spirit being included in the same case as the syringe, the needle of the latter being removable. The needle is made up of an alloy, so that when heated it does not lose its keen point, as happens with an ordinary steel needle. Another improvement consists in the needle being of such a shape as to accurately fit the nozzle of the syringe and to be in contact with the piston, thus enabling the quantity to be injectecl to be accurately measured.
A Italny Day Party.
For a rainy day a peanut party ii quickly managed, and is srreat sport The invitations may be folded small and put in a large peanut shell. Each guest is provided with a bag, which may be quickly made by the girls with tarletan and worsted or silk draw, strings. The peanuts are hidden everywhere through the rooms, and a simple prize is giveu to the boy or girl finding the most, with some grotesque one e»" a lo the pair finding the fewest.
