Hiok'8 January Weather.
A regular storm period iB central on January 3nd, which promises disturbances of a marked and violent type. Southerly regions will be visited by rain and wind storms, with winter thunder, while northerly sections will have rait, turning violently and rapidly into destructive sleet and blizzards. We will name the 2nd to oth as central danger days, and admonish all whose business requires personal exposure, to exercise all proper watchfulness on and about these dates. Blizzards with sweeping winds and snow blockades are very apt to prevail in all parts of the country, subject to such visitations. About, if not quite, the coldest wave of the win* tter is liable to follow during the disturbance of this period, and to dominate the whole country in the days followine up to the reactionary changes about the 8th and 9th. On and touching these days, higher temperature, with falling barometer and storms, will make their regular passage from west to east across the country. Renewed cold will follow these reactionary Btorms. We call upon all to make whatever preparations are necessary for the protection and comfort of man or beast.
The next regular period is from the 12th to 18th. The new moon on the 13th to 18th. The new moon on the 17th will have a strong tendency to drag the center of the disturbances up to and touching that date. Look for a return of heavy storms of rain andsaow at this period. If there be a reaction from the great cold to follow the storms of the last period, it will come on and about the 20th and 21st, in which event there will be more rain and snow, aud the regular rush of cold will follow protnptlv up to the entraoce of the next regular storm perio
About the 24th, indications of the last regular storms of the month will begin. Southerly winds and rising temperature with perhaps considerable thawing, will admonish of approaching storms. The danger days are 24th to 2?th. Remember the instructions given above and bo prepared for storms, however sudden or severe. The moon's first quarter is on the morning of the 23th,' which is also the centra! day of the period, which fact increases the probability of hard storms on and touching that date. The inevitable cold wave will come in behind these regular storms, insuring cold weather up to the changes due about the last day of the month.
'Which Is Which.
Two women at Covington, are laying claiming to the estate of the late John Cox, each claiming to be his widow. The deceased was a familiar ligure all over that part of the country. He.owned rich farms in Fountain county and also in Ohio. Altogether, he must have been •vorth $50,000. Four years ago he made his home near Covington. Two small children were with him who called him father, and there was also a youn^i French woman, who was understood tn be the nurse of the children. In 1SSP he removed to Ohio and a short time ago he died. The French woman now appears upon the scene, laying claim to one third of the estate as the widow of Cox. Scarcely had she entered proceedings in the Circuit Court before Mrs. Louson'oerg, of Chicago, appeared and made a similar claim. The last named claims to have remarried after Cox's death. Long and costiy litigattion is anticipated.

Should Post Himself.
The pathetic and brilliant corresponddent of tne Cincinnati Euquirer from this city, the same individual that re ported that Crawfordsville had 53 saloons, thus writes regarding the John Campbell parole with the same regard for facts as he did the saloon item:
Miss Edna Campbell, a daughter, who was born some months after her father's conviction, was instrumental in securing the parol*. She promised her dying mother to that effect.
It will undoubtedly be astonishing news to Miss Edna Campbell that John is her father instead of a brother as she had always been told. The "dying mother" is in fair health at this time and resides at Shannondale, having failed to die as yet to conform (o this correspondent's assertion. Young man post up before you do much more work for the Enquirer.
"iineliah" Mike's Spree.
Mike O'Neil celebrated Christmas Eve, by getting hilariously drunk and whipping his wife. He had only knocked her down three or four times when the neighbors interfered. The police were summoned and Mike ate his Christmas dinner with Sheriff Bible. Monday morning Mrs. Mike, wearing a ragged cloak and a black eye, appeared before Mayor Bandel and prayed for her brutal husband's release. She said she had '•skirmished around considerable" to get sufficient money to pay his tine but that she had only succeeded in raising $8 which she tendered to the Mayor in part payment together with a promise to pay the remainder before the end of the week. The Mayor very sensibly refused to thus take liread from her children mouths and .MiKe spent the holidays cracking stone.

Shark*
A successful diver must possess great courage and nerves of steel. Such a man, connected with a large wreckin, company, was visiting the pearl fisheries in the gulf of California. On one of his trips in quest of the pearl oyster he had a narrow escape from a fearful death.
He had been instructed never to stir from the bottom until he had looked up and around. Fortunately he heeded the adviee. Having filled his bag he glanced quickly about, and caught sight of a huge shovel nosed shark watching him.
In an emergency men think fast. Near the diver was a large rock. He moved quickly to the other side of it, hoping to dodge tho ferocious monster. But the maneuver did not work the shark watched every movement, changing his position by a slight motion of his powerful tail.
Time was precious, and the diver conceived the idea of blinding the shark by stirring up the mud. Under cover of that he might escape. He worked for dear life, and had the water thick with mud in less than half a minute.
Slipping around the rock again he rose to the surface, having barely strength enough to reach the side of the boat, and was hauled-on board jnst a? the voracious man eater made a rush for him.— Frank Leslie's Magazine.
Two Extremes.
There are many-things which women do not approve in men, as there are doubtless many faults in the moral and mental composition of women which are distasteful to men.
The violence and adusiveness, the lack of dignity, end even those personal differences which are emphasized with blows it would be painful to see introduced into an assemblage of women. Nevertheless there is no reason why the other extreme of excessive amiability should be aimed at, with the caressing aud petting that have their proper and only place within the four walls and the strict seclusion uf home.
