A number of persons, taking time '.:y th» forelock, and who desire to spend two or three weeks in Chicago during the progress of the World's Fair, have already engaged rooms and board in that city. Ratos for rooms can be obtained much cheaper by engaging them thus early.
The Chicago Herald of Saturday contains pictures of Emma Conner and James Stark, principals in the late •lander suit at Greencastle, venuedfrom this county. The pictures are as unlike the subjects as could well be, and the parties themselves would be surprised at such efforts of the artist.
Twenty-seven years ago a family named Thorntpn, of Frunkfort, cared for a strange lady during her accouchement, and assumed care of the child, a girl. The mother disappeared as silently as sho camo. For several months remittances came, and then ceased altogether. The Thornton family then transferred the little one to the couaty asylum, and tho infant was linally adopted by William Brant. She grow to womanhood, and at the time of her marriage to Clinton Gcssard she was put in possession of tho meager facts of her early history. Mr». Gossard then began a search for her p«rents, and the evidence now points to tho fact that she is tho daughter of William McFarland, a wealthy old bachelor, of Lewiston, Mont. Mr. McFarland has arranged to pay her a visit, and if she is his daughter Mrs. Gossard will ho formally recognized,

The other day J. B. Dooley of this township purchased 40 acres of land from Eli Arinontrout, south of the city. Mr. Dooley was in the city last 1' riday to get a deed to tho land and was greyly surprised to lind in the recorder's office that a mortgage was on tho land, which Mr. Armcntrout had assured him was unincumbered. Investigation disclosed a rather peculiar state of affairs. Tho records showed that in 1S33 j.' redrick Armantrout had obtained from Commissioner McConnell $50 of school money and to secure it had given a mortgage on 10 acres of land. There was no record of the transaction in the Auditors office, of course, tho Auditor's office being created by tho new constitution which went into effect years afterward. Consequently tho case passed on unnoticed by the board for all these years and as tho land changed hands only by being transmitted from father to son, the fact that a mortgage on it was never discovered. It probably never would have been discovered had not the land been sold necessitating the making of a deed. Mr. Dooley at once went before the board of commissioners with the case and asked that tho mortgage be released. It is likely that Fredrick
Armentrout paid the mortgage of years ago and that no record was made of it but even if ho did not the obligation was on the board to make the release as the mortgage was outlawed long ago. Tho board accordingly ordered Auditor Goben to release the land and Mr. Dooley was given a clear title.
Greene, the Subject of a Poet. Groene, tho funny man of the /ournal, has been visiting at Lafayette, and a local rhyuister of that city, gets off the the following concerning him:
Perhaps he has rested at the Lahr. And just cigar-eda little, And puffed the smoke into the air,
And cuspidor-ed the spittle, Or, maybe he'd a sweetheart here, And afternoon-ed about her, And vowed that ne'er till he was graved,
Could he get on without her. Perhaps her mother at that point. Came ita and mother-in law-ed him Perhaps htr father carriaged up,
In style and overawed him. Perhaps, however, they were not, Disturbed in either fashion They may have parlor-ed it alone,
And rocking-chair-ed their passion. Perhaps he supper-ed with his dear,
Then hurried to the station, And by the Monon train-ed for home,
On his visit's expiration.
Barfelt Go«s Up.
Theodore Barfelt, the man who wai jailed for public indecency, was arraigned before Judge Langdon this morning on the charge of petit larceny for having stolen a dollar from Gu« Roller. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to tho penitentiary for one year. Judge Langdon said he could make it a jail sentence, but as the prisoner had already atolen from one of the prisoners at the jail, he thought it bast to send him to the penitentiary. Several judgments were entered in claims. —Lafayette Conner.
Barfelt is the man who was arrested in this city during the fair for stealing a revolver. After laying the theft at the door of a "pal" and being released he threatened to bring suit against the Crawfordeville papers, for slander, but he didn't, no he didn't.

Burglars at Work.
Last Friday night burglars effected aii entrance into the store of McClure & Graham by descending through a trap door in tbe roof through the old opera house block. The offica was thoroughly, ransacked, but only a few dollars were found and taken, nearly all of the money having besn locked in the safe, which tho thieves made no attempt to enter. It was evidently tho work of houie talent, and the police have several fellows spotted aud arrests are likely to follow at any time.
