ABace for Life,
Monday last, G. A. Moore, while as-' sisting his brother to load a heavy log upon a wagon, came near passing in his checks and ovres bis lease on life to a good pair of legs and the presence of a chunk. Mr. Moore was using an ax to chock the log but just as the log reachthe top of the skids the chain loosened 4 and sent the log down upon him with the speed of a race horse, George saw the danger and ran for dear life but tripped and fell, the log still coming at great speed, was stopped at his heels by a chunk lying in its path. The fright and exertion so prostrated Moore that it was some time before he ^uld control hi:

A11 Early Winter.
We quote the following weather predictions for November from Word and Works, the magazine edited by Ira Hicks:
Fair, frosty weather in all the middle and western parts of the country will follow behind the reactionary disturbances in progress at the close of October. About Xov. 4th, warmer weather will b* on its way eastward—a lower barometer will be announced to the west and north, and storms mixed with rain and snow will appear. The 5th is the central day of the period, bringing the bulk of the disturbances about the 5th, 6th and Tth. The change to clear and quite cold will begin in the west Defore the storms reach the Atlantic coast, but a smart dash of early winter need not surprise, between the 5th and 10th. clean across the continent from west to east. About the 10th a warm reactionary movement will set in from the west bringing between the 9th and the 13th, the regular storms and changes to all parts of the country. Cold, frosty weather will be behind these disturbances and up to the entrance of the next' regular storm period.

A Narrow Escape.
Mrs. N. W. Myers and son had a narrow escape from asphyxiation by gas Sunday morning. Mr». Myers had had a gasoline stove changed so that natural? gas could be used, but had made no provision for the escape of burnt gas. Sun-.o day morning was decidedly chilly and the lady had the kitchen tightly closed. After an hour or so Mrs. Myers became faint and
but continued her work
until entirely overcome. Becoming seriously alarmed she told her little son to call some of the neighbors, but he to was unable to walk and was even past speaking. Mrs. Myers realized that the situation was desperate and by a mighty effort succeeded in reaching the door and getting to fresh air. The little boy was dragged forth and the neighbors worked with both until they recovered. It was a close call and one the victims are not hkelr to forget.
