Orawfordsville Forty Years Aco as Gleaned from an Old Newspaper.
We liave before us a copy of THE REVIEW, of the date May 1, 1852—forty years ago. It consists of four pages, six columns to the page, and was published by Jos. D. Masterson. A peruBal of this remarkable old sheet is decidedly interesting, and reveals some itrange and forgotten subjects. At that time Crawfordsville was a town of about 2,500 people, and there were no railroads constructed through it. Lafayette was the leading business point and most of the trade from here wont to thet city. Mails and passengers from Indianapolis arrived by the old 4-horse stage which in good weather arrived here by noon from that city. Politics that year was decidedly hot. It was the Presidential campaign, Pierce being the candidate for President of the democratic party and Gen. Scott of the whigs. The democratic candidate for Governor was Jos. A. Wright, and for Lieutenant Governor, A. P. Willard. For Reporter of the Supreme Court, Horace Carter, of Montgomery county was the candidate. The democratic National and State tickets were triumphant that year.
The leading merchants of that day in Crawfordsville were J. Lee & Co., J. P. Campbell, Graham & Bro., Kuhn & Ramey, Sloan & Morgan, and D. Werthem, all of whom have long since passed from time to eternity. The ad. of Graham & Bro., says "We sell muslin at 3 cents per yard and lawn at 10 cents per yard." Comparing the prices of 40 years ago with those of to-day in the matter of dry goods, there is little difference. Graham & Bro. were located where Jolly Joel's clothing Btore is now. They kept a large line of dry goods and groceries, and it is said enjoyed a larger trade than any store has ever since had in this city. Both, however, died poor. J. P. Campbell was the father of the two Campbell brothers. He was very popular as a merchant, beloved by the community for his worth and upright character, and his death which was the result of a railway accident in New York some eight years ago, was greatly lamented. In this issue before us we find the following:
PL/CNK-ROAD NOTICE. Notice is hereby given that there will be an election held at the Baptist church in the town of Middletown, Montgomery county, by the stock-hold-ers of Middletown and Crawfordsville Plank Road Company, on Saturday, the 22d day of May, 1852, at 2 o'clock, for the purpose of electing five directors for said company.
Plank roads were popular at one time in this country, but were expensive and soon wore out. Someone may be anxious to know where on earth is Middletown, Montgomery county. There was a Middletown, but its name was changed to Waynetown.
Here is a rather comical advertisement which may amuse some of the older citizens of Coal Creek township:
NOTICE—ONE CENT REWARD. Runaway from the subscriber, living in Coal Creek township, Isaac Nelson Campbell, a bound boy to the farming business. All persons are hereby notified riot to trust or harbor him on my account, as I will pay no debts of his contracting. The above reward will be given and no thanks. LEVI CURTIS.
Up to date wo have not learned whether Levi found his bound boy or not, but if he failed it was doubtless on account of the small reward.
It may appear somewhat strange that in the great lapse of time—forty years— that has intervened, since the copy of THE REVIEW before us was published, there should yet remain in business persons who were then employed, yet such was the fact. Here is one:
T. D. Brown & Co., respectfully inform the public that they are now receiving direct from Philadelphia, a splendid assortment of Drugs, Medicines, Paints, Oils, Dye Stuffs, Brushes, etc.
The T. D. Brown is the identical "Teddy" who is still dishing out pills and paragoric the same as forty years ago.
Here is another one: House and Sign Painting, Glazing and Gilding done with neatnesB and dispatch. Shop over Morgan & Sloan's drug store, on Main street.
T. H. WINTON.
Mr. Winton has been an industrious mechanic for about sixty years, most of which time he has spent in Crawfordsville. He still labors, but declining years and old age are telling on him rapidly and he will Boon lay aside the brush and bucket forever.
Here is one more old time citizen who through THE REVIEW of forty years ago desires to let them know he is in business:
NEW HARDWARE STORE. Jesse W. Cumberland would respectfully announce to his friends and the public generally that he is now opening
Crawfordsville an extra sort of hardware, in the room occupied by Steven Graves.

Good Looks.
Good looks are more than skin deep, depending upon a healthy condition of all the vital organs. If the liver be inactive, you have a billious look, if your Bto mach be disordered you have a dyspeptic look and if your kidneys be'affected you have a pinched look. A Contractor's Advice.
Messrs.Dullam Bros—I take great pleasure in t^stifyin? ii ii lit' of Dullam's Gr at German Blood, liver atoniach and kidney cure. I can safely say that I never took such medicine as that to cleanse the liver, stomach and kidneys. I was suffering for year? with billi usness, indigestion, and loss of appetite and sleep. One bottle did for me more good than six months' other treatment, and I feel it my duty to testify in its behalf, so others may try it and get cured.
