Forty-five years ago. the indomitable Brigham Young and a small band of hardy zealotB paused at the mouth of Immigration Canon and viewed the site of the future home o! the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon church). Before them was a dry and dusty plain, covered with cactus and sage brush, and'ascending on all sides to meet tho rugged mountains that almost entirely encircle it. To-day that desert is a garden spot, dotted with farm houses and villages, a "land of milk and honey." Here, on the banks of the river Jordan, which flows into tho Dead Sea but a few miles away, is a beautiful citv. a New Jerusalem, the City of Zion.
Tho city is charmingly located on a gentle declivity, at tho foot of a range of low mountains, with many handsome buildings, and broad, shaded avenues down which rush streams of pure mountain water, and is replete with picturesque nooks and points of interest. On the main business street, under the brow of tho foot-hills, is Temple block, the sole possession of this once rich and powerful church. Here is that wonderful building, tho tabernacle, which looks very much like a huge egg. The building is two hundred feet long, soventy feot wide, a perfect oval with no supports to the roof other than that offered by tho walls. It has a seating capacity of eight thousand, and so perfect aro the acoustics that the sound caused by dropping a pin is distinctly audible from onetnd of the immense structure to the other. The pipe organ is also an object of interest, being tho largest in the United States, and made entirely from Utah materials. A choir of 300 trained voices furnishes the vocal music, which is grand. Here are held the services of tho Mormon church, and the attendance averages about 4,000. Tho Mormon Temple, now about completed, rises gracefully from the ground of this same plat, a beautiful pile of granito surmounted by six towers, a tribute to the blind faitb of this peculiar people. This temple, which is built for the use of Christ upon his second coming, was begun forty-three years ago, and has been built almost entirely of tithes, every member of tho church, contributing either in labor or materal, or both, in accordance with his means. The immense blocks of granite were quarried in tho adjacent mountains, and brought here by ox teamsover almost impassable roads, it sometimes taking six months for the transportation and setting of a single stone. The cost has been a triHe over $1,500,000.00, and it is estimated that it will require half a million more for its completion and furnishing.
On April Gth the Mormons laid a capstone, just thirty-nine years from the day the corner stone was laid, and also unveiled a beautiful gold-leaf iigure of their guardian angel, Moro.ii, who revealed to Joseph Smith the tablets of stone so many years since.
East of Temple block are tho former domains of Brigham Young, containing his farms, residence, tho Boe-liive. Lion House and Guard House, or Amelia Palace. The last named building is a magnilicent structure, furnished in elegance, and was destined for his favorite wife, Amelia. It, together with tho Lion and Bee-hive, and tho buildings occupied by tlio "tithing department,' aro now the property of the government, having been confiscated.-
The Gardo House is tho home of the Keeley Institute, and upon a recent visit there, 1 met a grandson of tho la mented Brigham, a patient of the Institute.
Immediately opposite, and adjourning the Bee-hive, is tho Eagle Gate, which was once the entrance to Brigham grounds, and the greater part of the high stone and mud wali which surrounded them is yet standing. Among tho quaint and incongrous sights to be seen is this inscription over a saloon door: "Holiness to the Lord Old live Whiskey lOets." Indeed, this inscription is tho lirst seen on all tho signs of tho Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institutes.
There aro many other things connected with Mormonism that would doubtless interest your readers, but 1 will not bo able to pursue this subject further if 1 tell you anything of tho modern Salt Lake city and its environments.
Among tho many pleasuro resorts that abound, the great Salt Lake is deservedly tbe most popular. Ilero onethird of the population of nearly sixty thousand aro to bo found at sometime during the week and on Sunday at least live thousand people spend the day there. Tho bathing is delightfulincomparable—tho scenery grand, tho water a beautiful blue and so dense with salino matter that to sink is im possible, to lloat, the easiest thing imaginable. 1 have often seen bathers lying on their backs, one kneo elevated, a leg thrown over it, placidly smoking a cigar in tho grateful shade of an umbrella, and a chain o! thirty "floaters," tho head of ono resting on tho feot of another is a common sight. All around this resort, Garfield Beach, aro rugged mountains which lend beauty to tho animated scene. At night tho scene is lighted by electricity, and dancing begins, Besides tho Lake aro the Warm Sulphur Springe, hardly a milo from tho temple, and a little further the Hot
Springs, so "cleanliness and Godliness" (according to tho texts of the Mormon church) go easily hand-in-hand.
Citj Croek Canon runs almost down to Eagle Gate and is well peopled up to its mouth, where the wagon road begins that leads you up a narrow detile to the most delightful of mountain scenery. On both sides and at times in front and behind rises massive walls of earth aud rock, and City creok dashes along the roadside, foaming over rocks anil falling with a roar over precipices. About six miles from tho city are the camping grounds, and each Sunday the place is animated by throngs of pleasure seekers.
On tho shore of Salt Lake are two big natural gas wells, pronounced by Indiana experts as "bonanzas." Two companies have been granted franchises by the city, aud denizens here expect to warm themselves by this commodity ere another year is ushered in.
Polygamy is about dead in the cities, but occasionally a luckless "co-hab," is brought up from the "back deestriets" and given a term in the penitentiary, in tho southern part of the city.
Since tho appointment of the Utah commission and the sentence of the first of the Apostles, tho Liberals or Gentiles, have raged a relentless war upon this vice that has done so much to put tho Mormon church in bad odor, and to-day prominent Mormons who, have served time for Polygamy aro a common sight. Ono "dose," however, is all they want generally, though somo of them continue to live "under ground."
Tho "Liberals" havo elected tho last two city governments, but the fight between them and tho church party is still waged vindictively. Tho most intense feeling prevades all sections, and the war is both bitter and relentless— democrats and republicans marching shoulder to shoulder against tho common enemy.
There are many more things of which I might write, concerning this "Giant of tho Rockies,'' but it is a hopeless task to tell it all, and I will not risk robbing my rambling letter of what interest it may possess by adding to its length. But if any of your readers will come and stand by my sido at sunset in Prospect Tower and gaze on tho beautiful panorama unfolded before him, tho stately teuiplo. tho green lields, tho river Jordan aud tho great Salt Lake, tho whole lying in a huge basin hemmed in by lofty mountains and donned by tho bluest of skies, he will go away singing loudly the praise of .this "Garden of Eden."
