Peddlers Must Pay.
At the next meeting of the City Council that body will be presented with a monster petition signed by almost every business man in the city asking them to pass an ordinance that will prohibit hawkers from entering the city and selling their wares. The first section provides that no person shall peddle, sell, distribute or take orders for any article commonly handled by grocerymen without procuring a license at $5.00 a day, but this

and
farmers living in the county or adjoining one. The second section provides a license of 815 a day for peddling dry goods, gents' furnishings and clothing. The third section requires a license of §10 a day for
peddlers
of jewelry,
watches, knives, Bilver plating and trinkets of all kinds. The fourth section refers to hardware with a similar license. Section five requires all traveling doctors, clairvoyants and fakirs to deposit $10 a day for plying their business. By the language of section six public and private auctioneers except those legitimately in the business and residents of the city must pay $25 per day. Section seven makes the price of distributing agricultural implements, fence, gates, churns, pumps and the like 810 a day. Section eight provides a license of $5 a daj for persons not residents of the county to sell flowers or plants. Section nine protects business men against the fiends who want them to put their cards on advertising hangers to be placed in hotels and other places by putting a $10 license in the way. Section ten put a charge of $100 on person who open up storeB to sell in competition with home merchants unless they make affidavit that they intend to become permanent residents. The present license is $2 per day or $5 per week.

Sunday Closing.
ED REVIEW:— The communication in last week's REVIEW, regarding the Sunday closing movement, has the right ring. The idea of a few latter-day Puritans running this town to suit their antiquated views, is prepostrous. That petition that was published a few weeks ago, contained the names of several store-keepers who never signed it nor authorized any one to sign it for them. The law and order league has evidently resorted to falsehood in order to gain their ends. But then it is no sin to lie for the glory of the church. The actions of these Sunday "Christians'' are disgusting many of our citizens^with religion.
