The Rev. Sam Small will run for congress this fall in Livingstone's Georgia district on the alliance ticket. He announces as his platform that if elected ho will not attend the horse races while in Washington.

The August meeting of the Farmers' Council will be devoted exclusively to country roads and methods of improving them. The county commissioners and all road supervisors will be especially invited to be present.

The funeral of Mary, the five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sloan, occurred from the residence of David Divine, on west Main street. Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. J. R. Cunningham officiating. The interment took place at Oak Hill. ..

The committee of the Wilder brigade will meet at Terre Haute, Juno 7, to make the necessary arrangements to attend the.reunion of the army of tho Cumberland. At this reunion the Wilder brigade will dedicate its monu ment which will be placed, on the battlefield of Chicamauga. Thero are six hundred members in this' state.

.Maurice Thompson sings breezily and sweetly. All that lives in the open air inspires him. The birds are his friends and tcachers. The landscapes, the stream, tho leaping fish, afford subjects for his verse. His hand turns naturally to ballad poetry, too, as witness "Old Rochon" in his new volume of '•Poems." His work is good and true, and moro of it will always bo welcome.—New York Tribune.

John Peterson, one of Montgomery county's representatives in the employ of Uncle Sam at Washington, D. C., is visiting relatives near Mace.

A Mr. Wray, carpenter, living west of the college, had a finger amputated last Saturday, the result of erj sipelas. Dr's. Leech and Hutchings performed the operation.

Over twenty persons from this county will attend the republican national convention which convehes at Minneapolis on Tuesday next. A number of them will start to-day.

No preparations for a general celebration of the 4th of July in this city are in contemplation and it is quite probable that those celebrating on that day will have to go to some other city to do so.

The pair of ponies driven to Albright's bakery wagon became frightened and ran away last Saturday. The wagon was badly wrecked and a boy named Williams who was in the wagon at the time, sustained a badly fractured leg.

Charley Graves well known hero some time since, came in Monday, on a knee crutch with one foot crippled. He trun a nail in his foot sixteen years ago, and his affliction now is attributed to the accident then.—New Richmond Times.

Although bad wet weather has reigned supreme during the most of the four past weeks farmers have been enabled notwithstanding to get in considerable corn in the ground, although the amount planted this year will not be near as much as last.
