The collections taken up for Sam Small last Sunday amounted to $50, which fact naturally suggests the question "Is Preaching a Failure?"
The horse show drew quite a crowd to the city Saturday. Although the number of horses paraded was not large, but what was lacking in that department was made up in quality.

The pest house, one of the county's handsome structures, situated on the banks of the raging Sugar creek, fell a victim to the fierce and ruthless flames last Sunday afternoon. The loss is complete, amounting to something over three dollars, and no insurance. Owing to the backwardness of the season and corn planting right at hand, it will probably not be rebuilt this spring.
In canvassing for chairman of the Democratic County Contral Committee, the Leader hears tho name of Dr. Hillis frequently mentioned for that position. The doctor is a hustler, when he takes off his coat, and this he would do if chosen chairman. In fact, tho Democrat in Tippecanoe county who expects to accomplish very much, politically, has to hustle all the time.—Lafayette Leader.
A1 Scott went to Ladoga last Saturday via tho C. & S. E. io see tho horse show. When about three miles from Waveland the train left the track, and ran for a quarter of a mile on the ties, but was back on the rails again, and got to Ladoga without further incident. However, there were so many bloody fights there that A1 got scared out, and being afraid to trust the Midland trains again, walked the entire distance homo. He has a ticked good from Ladoga to Waveland to dispose of at a ruinous discount.—^Vavoland Independent.
Closed in Pront.
Mayor Bandlo announced with a great flourish of trumpets a few daya ago that he would cnforco tho ordinance requiring tho saloons to be closcd on Sunday. They aro closed on Sundays, that is, the front doors, but no doubt tho back doors in many of them stand ajar for many hours on theso days. Sunday last scores of young mon could be seen going up tho alloy leading east
from
Washington to Green. There are two saloons, the back lots on which thoy aro located fronting on this alley. The young men it was observed always stopped on theso lots and walked toward the back door opening into these saloons. A number of young fellows were also drunk on Sunday. This same thing can be observed to-morrow. If tho Mayor will take a little timo he may observe theso things as well as anybody else. If saloons are to be closed let the officers see that they are both in front and back. We trust the Mayor will give no thought of what his actions may have toward a race for the office two years from now, upon the saloon keepers who keep open a back door on Sundays, but will see that the law is promptly enforced. The people will be with him in sincere efforts to do so.
Sam Small.
The somewhat noted preacher Sam Small held fourth to large crowds of people at three different places in Crawfordsville on Sunday. Ho is not Rev. Small nor Dr. Small, as so many ministers glory in being dubbed, but iB plain Sam Small, and all the way from Atlanta, Ga. His preaching is plain, pointed and forcible and takes well with tho multitude for tho time being. Numbers went to hear him who had not before been inside of a church probably for two years, and won't go again until the next sensational preacher comes along. Such individuals would do as well may be to remain away permanently from religious meetings judging by the effect the words uttered frtom the pulpits have upon them. Small has been before the public now for ten years or more, and has made preaching a success pecuniarily speaking at least, as he has in the past received much money for his work. What he was paid here for his Sunday's work we have not heard stated.
Got $8,000 Damages.
Tho case of Lydia Wingate, wife of John Wingate, against the Toledo, St. Louis & Kansas City, railroad for $20,000 damages on account of injuries received by being thrown from a train at Wingate, Ind., was tried last week in Rockville before his honor, Judge Fred F. White, and resulted Friday night in a verdict for the plaintiff of $8,000. Tho case was ably contested by the company's attorney, Mr. BaylesB, of Frankfort, assisted by A. B. Anderson. Snyder & Brush were for the plaintiff. Mrs. Wingate is a cripple for life. Her injuries were spinal and permanent and the verdict was only a reasonable one. The case will be appealed to the Supreme Court.
The Everetts Have Gone.
William Everett, together with his son and beautiful wife, have left us. Thoy were the last of the Monon wreck victims and went direct to New York Ciny. Mrs. Everet is able to walk only with great difficulty and an operation will be performed on her as soon as she reaches destination. Brush & Snyder will represent her in her suit against the Monon for damages, which, it io quite probable will be compromised. Mis. Evert's recent illness evidently tended to patch up the estrangement between herself and her husband for their cooing were likened unto a pair of doves.
After the grip Hood's Sarsaparilla will restore your strength and health, and expel every trace of poison from the blood.
Refreshing Eetreats.
Summer days are fast approaching and now is the time that excursionists, pleasure-seekers and sportsmen should figure out a route for their summer vacation. in doing so, the delightfully cool summer and fishing resorts located along the Wisconsin Central Lines come vividly to view, among which are Fox Lake, 111,, Lake Villa,' 111., Mukwonago, Waukesha, Ceder Lake, Neenah, Waupaca, Fifield, Butternut and Ashland, Wis. Wisconsin has. within the last five years become the center of attraction for more pleasure seekers, hunters and fishermen than any other state in tho union, and each visit increases the desire to again see the charming landscapes, breathe tho balsam fragrance that is apart of tho invigorating atmosnhere, wander through the colonnades of stately pines and hook the speckled beauties with a hand made fly.
