WHO SHOULD EEG1STEE?
Absentees from the State for More Than Six Months. Among the amendments to tho election law adopted by the last legislature is the following, regarding registration ot voters in certain cases: "Any person who, having been a resident ot Indiana. and qualified voter therein at any general election, shall have absented himself froui the state for a period of six months or'more since last so voting, or who shall have gone into any other state or sovereignty with the intention of voting therein since last voting, or during any absence in another state or snvnrpignly, shall have voted therein, since last voting, and also any person who shall have been a bona fide resident of the county in which ho resides at least six months before any election, shall, before being entitled to vote at such election in this state, register in the oflice of tho clerk of tho circuit court of 'the county in which he resides, a notice that he claims to be a legal voter in such county. Such registration shall be made at least fifty-nine days prior to such election, and the notice shall state such person's name, age and place of residence (by which shall be understood his lodging place), both at the time of registrator and during the peViod of four months prior thereto."
STILL TALKING BLAINE. There seems no doubt that there is a sincere, open and determined opposition to Harrison's nomination for President and a strong feeling that Blaine bo nominated spite of his heretofore expressed feeling against such a courso. Those opposed to Ilarrlfion number among them such men as Piatt, Quay, Cameron, Houston and other equally well known republican leaders. Many of them doubt his chances of re-election and want some man that will win. Blaine thoy consider tho man. There are a number of republican delegates to go uninstructed and this leaves them free to act with the element hostile to Harrison. Our belief is that they have begun too late. The general sentiment of the republican party is favorable to Harrison's re nomination, and the disaffected cannot stem the tide that has set in in favor of him. This is with the understanding that Blaine positively is not and will not be a candidate. By simply speaking the word Blaine could at once bo nominated. He is a demigod among the republicans and comos as near being worshipped as any man they have ever had, but he is Bhrewd enough to know that he has had his day, and can never be President, and no doubt is sincere in saying that he is not a candidate.
AN unbridled tongue will frequently get a man into much trouble, and he that controls it is wise. A man named Post of Irvington, a suburb of Indianapolis, called a neighbor Cecil who "owed him something near a dollar, a thief, because he would not pay it. Cecil at once entered suit, and at the last term of the Boone circuit court to which the case waB venued received a judgment of $400 against Post. It can be safely said that Post has wished many times that he had not said this, but it is too late now and his tongue in this instance at least cost him much money.
WHEN the Democrats win a big victory wo are wont to see the "rooster" displayed in the Democracy's newspapers. And—nowadays—how few people know tho origin of that symbol of victory.
The "rooster"' had a strange origin as a pary emblem. Many years ago, a man named Chapman edited the Indianapolis Sentinel. One of the Democratic managers of that date thought thiDgs were not going as prosperously for tho party as thoy should go. Ho wrote to stir the politicians up, and among other things he said:—"Tell Chapman to crow" and claim victory. This letter, by accident fell into the hands of the Whigs. They printed it, and in the whole campaign, from one end of the country to the other, tho words:—"Tell Chapman to crow" were ringing in derision. The Boston Herald, which is pretty good authority, adds that the year following this episode the late Col. Charles G. Greene of the Boston Post, when the Democrats began to win victories, turned tho laugh upon the opponents of Democracy by getting out a cut of a rooster in earnest. That was the origin of the crowing fowl in American politics.
EIVEE AND HAEBOE IMPROVEMENT. The majority of the House to set examples of retrenchment and reform must practice what it preaches. Last week appropriations amounting to over §20,000,000 for river and harbdr improvements were voted for by it. There seems heretofore little benefit resulting from most river and harbor improvements. This voting away of the peoples' monoy with no beneficial results arising from it will not be forgotten. Wo are pleased to notice that Brookshire, Brown, Bynum and other Indiana democratic representatives voted against the bill, and that Congressman Holman worked earnestly against it but with no benefit as it was voted upon favorably.
FOR BOISE.
The Iowa democrats at their State convention last week speak out unmistakably for Boise as their candidate for President and propose to use all honorable efforts to secure for him the nomination. They have no provisos, ifs, anus, or contingencies, in their resolutions but aro distinctly for him over any other candidate. They have set a good example for other States having candidates, ia that where they favor a home candidate he shall have precedence, and do not favor going east for a, candidate with as much prospect of defeat as here tofore, but are for Boise first and last and with strong hopes, if nominated, of being elected.
ONE of tho schemes undoubtedly to be used by the rads at the 9lection next fall by which they may hope to win will be, where possible, to get democrats to absent themselves from the polls. Those low enough to accept tho bribe can, of course, pretend to have business elsewhere and which prevented them in reaching home in time to vote, others can play sick and be confined to their beds, etc. The rads. must neutralize in some manner the workings of tho present election law as it is dangerous to their interest and success, and that they will seek to induce men to remain away from the polls there is no doubt.
WITII Chase as with Harrison there is considerable opposition to his nomination among leading republicans of the state, and that lie will receive it is not a matter that it would not do to wager any money upon. He seems to be running mostly upon his merits as a preacher and member of the Christian church rather strange qualities to bring forward to fit him for Governor. It seems that ex-Governor Porter will be the favorite, among the leading politicians of the party and may, if he runs, defeat Chase.
A
JUDGE
NOTHING would appear more hypocritical and nonsensical than the republican party's professed welfare for tho ex-soldiers. They showed this distinctly in their late county convention here. Three ex-soldiers, old party workers and time-tried republicans, sought the nomination for representative. All of them were defeated and a young school teacher, but a "christian" gentleman, was nominated. In fact, we believe of the nine or ton nominated only one had served as a soldier.
THE democrats in Congress have passed the bill on putting binding twine on on tho free list. ThiB is right, just, honest and in line with pledges made in the last canvass. Will tho repuhli
IF a first-class lawyer cannot make a will dividing his property asj to|his desires then the question is, who can? Samuel J. Tilden made a will disposing of several million dollars' worth of property, yet it was broken. The late Hon. Joseph E. McDonald made a will, Betting out in it to whom his real estate and personal property should be given yet it looks, from the litigation now going on in the court of Marion county over it, that it will be broken. Such contests generally are disgraceful to all concerned. The best way would seem for a man of wealth-to do is to deed his property while living in the enjoyment of good health, taking care that the beneficiaries support him during the rest of his life. It looks now that much of the late Senator McDonald's property would be wasted in litigation before it is finally settled who is to keep it.

l'roiiounced,Hopeless, YetSaved. From a letter written by Mrs. Ada E Ilurd, of Groton, S. D., we quote: "Was taken with a bad cold which settled on my lungs, cough set in and finally terminated in consumption. Four doctors gave me up, saying I could live but a short time. I gave myself up to my Savior determined if I could not stay with my friends'on earth, I would meet my absent ones above. My husband was advised to get Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, coughs and colds. I gave it a trial, took in all eight bottles it has cured me, and thank God I am now a well and hearty woman." Trial bottles free at Nyo & Co's Drugstore, rogular size 50c. and $1.00.
