A OENTENA.RIO DEAD.

Aunt Oasay Ketohum a Colored Women Aeed 102 Years Passed Away. There were a week ago three "persons in Crawfordsville, whose united ages was a fraction over 300 yeani. One of them haa dropped off the roll, passed away to the majority. AuDt Casey Ketchum, born Oct. 1790, died at theresidence of Zack Williams,! on east Wabash Avenue on Saturday evening last Speaking of her early life some time aso she said: "I was born a slave in Prince George eounty, Maryland, on October 13, 1790. I knew very little of my parents, my mother dying while I was a baby and my father living on a distant plantation and the property of a man named John Alien. I remember of seeing him only once or twice, but remember my sister and two brothers quite well. I was owned in Maryland by Miss Nancy Spriggs. She was placed at early age in the family of Dr. Canby, father of Qen. Canby, near 70 years ago and with them came to Madison Indiana. Continuing further along in incidents of her life she related: "We lived there some time and one day Goneral Jackson, who had recently been made President, passed through on his way to Washington from New Orleans. He visited Dr. Canby and appointed him land agent at Crawfordsville, to succeed Mr. Whitlock the Whig. We came in wagons and again had to go through the woods. We made our last stop at Jimtown. There was only one house there then, owned by a blacksmith named Wick. Crawfordsville was a very

town then and Dr.

Canby was a great man in it.

house Btood where the central school building is now and the pre sent school yard was his door with yard. He built a big house 40 rooms in it and the folks called it "Canby's Polly." The doctor was married twice and had nine children Dick Canby, who

dians, was the best one of all. I remember so well when ho was born, and I nursed him whilo ho was a baby."

Tho city officials attended in body the funeral of John W. Rauasoy yesterday. There is no improvement in the caBe of Judge Davidson for somo days past.

The opening of Elston Grove for the construction of streets has been abandoned for,the present.

Tho republicans of tho county make township nominations to-day for their convention next Saturday.

An oxtra passenger train to run during the summer months will bo placed on the Vandalia lino in a few weeks.

Work toward repairing the central school building began this week, and three months will be required to complete it.

The "County Pair'" combination at Music Hall drew out a big house and tho entertainment gave general satisfaction.

Thero is is yet much work for the street commissioners in making repairs on tho stroets caused by placing gas mains in them.

Tho Washington street pump needs repairing, as it has fooled enough individuals who have sought to eot water from it lately and failed.

Louis Bischof and John Gilbert have bought two lots in Elston Grove, fronting on Wabash Avenue, and will build residences theron this summer.

A. number of tax payers desire tho Pike street bridge over the Monon removed and the grade lowered. It would cost cousiderablo and it is not probable the change will bo made soon.

One of the most imposing structures of modern architecture is certainly to be found in the Vandalia station at Waveland. The building is a relic of early history of the United States and was built when people wore moccasins without socks and cared little for grandeur— the lattor we'll swear to. We ware unfortunate enough to be thrust ruthlessly into this pig-sty one day this week to await the'coming of a northbound train. The spacious waiting room in this antideiuvian ark is certainly a naecca for the relic crank for upon its time worn board walls are to be found autographs of some illiterate, persons who "stood" thoroughbreds and talked about their neighbors before the flood and a few who have been knocked out of the ring by Daddy Time since that date. But there it stands to-day in all its prestine glory,, surrounded by a halo of its former greatnese»antl the stench of a neighboring hog pen. It is a disgrace to the town and the company that maintains it, and the sooner it is put oh wheels and shipped the World's Pair and placed among the other relics of the barbaric ages the better it will be for the town of Waveland and her forbearing populace.

Death in Acouchement,

One of the most remarkable caseB of aconchoment over brought under our notice occurred in this city this week. Last Tuesday a cow belonging to Joseph Grimes, living on west Wabash avenue, gave birth to two woll developed calves that at present i»ive evidence of one day enjoying a healthy heiferdom. During tho process of delivery the mother cow died. The cause of her death led a couple of veterinarios into a heated discussion and to settle tho dispute a

mortom was held, the result «of which knocked both of their theories higher than tlildoroy's kite. In tho fetus was found six other calves in a state of embryo, making in all eight calves to which the cow should have given birth. The caso is an unusually strange one and Is exciting no little interest.
