ELWOOD.
"The Phenomenal Oity" of the Gas Belt. El wood is now known as the phenomenal city of the gas belt and such it really is. Its situaccd in tho midst of a very fertile agricultural country on the P. C. & St. Louis, known as tho Pan Handle rail road, and the L. E. & W., rail road, 137 mileB from Cincinn .ti. 161 miles from Chicago and 50 miles from Indian. apoliB in the center of the Indiana gaB field. Elwood has grown from a Bleepy village of 700 people to a hustling city ot 5,000 souls within the laBt three years. The location for a city is |fine being of a level or gently rolling surface with Duck creek and Pipe creek affording a good natural drainage. The key to the secret of Elwood's phenomenal growth can be attributed first to the seemingly inexhautiblo and wonderful supply of natural gas, which nature has in reserve for us and which is now being utilized for tho benefit of her citizens, no gas being piped from the city and the eur. rounding territory being leased to pipe to the city. This being the fact mammoth manufacturing establishments representing millions of capital have been located hero by shrewd capitalists. Free gas and free sites for factories. Two weeklys and one daily newspaper keeps the people posted on political matters and occurring events.
Elwood's spiritual affaira are looked after by the following denominations: Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Protestant, Catholic, Baptists. Presbyterian?, Christians, New Lights. The Universalists also have a following.
Tho fraternal orders are K. of P.. I. O. R. M., two G. A. R's., W. R. C., D. of R. I. O. O. F., Pythian Sisters, F. &. A. M. and O. E. S.
Tho city has a good system of water works and tho Thomson & Houston electric light system, both in operation.
The public schools have boon inadequate, but with t,ho now school buildings which are being oro cted it, is hoped all scholars can be accommodated during tho coming school year.
Tho financial institutions are the Citizens Bank and First National Bank and both are doing an immense business.
There will be an unlimited amount of improvements and building hero this year. There are several miles of gravel, macadcmized and brick streets to be built during this year. The contracts are already let and work on some have already begun.
Thero are now several brick business rooms being built and all are rented even before work on them begun.
It is a low estimate to say that there .will be 700 dwelling houses built in Elwood during 1892.
Elwood not only has natural gas, but a large vein of block coal has just been discovered, since which the large factories have, determined to greatly increase their capacity.
Tho Diamond Plate Glass Works, the largest in the world covering near 14 acres of laud with mammoth brick buildings, will be enlarged ono third and will employ from 1,000 to 1.200 men.
The McBeth Pearl Top Lamp Chimney works will enlarge ono third and will employ 700 to 8.r}0 handB. Have just completed an iron foundry which is now in operation. We have a Bent wood factory, an implement factory, a ladder factory, excelsior factory, heading factory, machine shops, two saw and plaining mills, ono of which manufactures all kinds of building material and furnituro etc., and other small factories. Tho largest tin and tern plate factory on this continent is beiug built to which steejj rolling mills will bo added, Three buitfiings are now up aud eleven car loads of machinery of tremendous weight s«id gigantic proportions is now on the ground and being placed in position. This factory will bogin operation in June with 300 hands and when completed expects to employ 2,000 men..
Work has just begun on a 20 pot window glass factory. Two bottle factories havo been sccurod on which work has not yet begun.
It should not bo forgotten that Elwood has the only factory in America making fine telescopic and other lonses.
Taking all in consideration Elwood has as bright futuro prospects as any city in America' that expects to reach a population of 20,000 to 30,000.
The city is ono of tho best business towns in the state. All branches of business are florishing. R. L. Leeson's general retail store employs 25 clorks and in 1891 transacted $225,000.00 in business. Thero aro no vacant store rooms or dwellings in the city. Rents aro high owning to demand for houses. Wages good.
ThoB. McMahon, grocer, and II. H. Clark, photographer, are from Crawfordsville. H. E. Lidstor, druggist, is from Yountsvillo.
Will Zerfaco formerly of Waynetown, and well known over Montgomery county, is a member of tho firm of Minnick & Zerface, real estate agents, and yesterday located a large bottle factory on an addition which they are selling. Will will answer any inquiries from Montgomery county frionds.
Wheat Advancing
Farmers, W. M. Darter at the Big Four elevator, is booming the price of wheat. He wants and must have within the next 30 days 30,000 bushels of wheat for milling purposea. He is in earnest and will pay fancy prices for immediate delivery.
RETALIATION.
Saloonkeepers of Sioux Oity, la. in a Revengeful Mood.
THE STREET-CAR SYSTEM TIED CP.
X« U«t Even for the ClOHlnff or Their Saloons, Proprietors Cause the .Enforcement of tlie Sunday Law —Kxclting Scenes.
STOI'PKD THE CARS.
Sioux CITY, la., April 18.—About 40 miles of rapid transit were tied up Sunday by tlie Sunday law enforcement movement. The Peavy electric system, which operates 25 miles ol road, was the first to be attacked by officers armed with warrants for their arrest, but soon after the cable line and the Booge system were also assailed. The warrants charged violation of the Sunday statutes. They were served on the motormen and the conductors. As fast as the men were taken off the cars by the officers other men took their places, while arrangements were made for giving bonds.
Cliurcli-Goors Forced to Walk. The Peavy system held out for two hours, but finally at noon called its cars in and tied up for the day. The elevated railway which connects with a line to Morning Side was dealt with more easily, as it has only two trains. The enforcers timed their work so as to tie up the lines while the people were at church, and thus 500 people were cut off by the stopping of the road from Morning Side, 5 miles distant.
Scared by a Shotgun.
The Riverside Electric Company made a lively fight, and ran most of the day by skillful relays of motormen. Once when all the men were under arrest Charles II. Swan, one of tlie proprietors, took the train out. The cable oompany succeeded in running all day. At a critical time John Pierce, a Sioux City millionaire, owner of the line, took the lever and ran antrum. When the officers went to the power house to stop the engine they found the door barricaded and Mr. Pierce behind it with a shotgun, fie threatened to shoot the first man that entered. None entered.
Many Arrests .Hade.
A crowd of 4,000 assembled at the downtown terminus of the cable to witness the fight. The cable line employes mixed with the crowd and at a signal would leap on the cars and start them. About 100 arrests were made, and all on the information of two saloonkeepers. They arc the first, in retaliation for the closing up of saloons by the newlyelected mayor, who, although an anti.prohibitionist, declares that he will observe his oath of office. He ordered the police to close all the saloons. The whisky men have raised a large fund to retaliate. "Will Kxtend Their KfTortH.
They did not stop with the. rapid transit lines, but arrested every pvopri etor of cigar am* news and cand stands and similar ^"-vuess caught with open doors. ti

by clairvoyants in regard to these charms that it is almost Impossible to know the genuine. Our charms apply to either. 1 ilhistrato wo use for a BUbJect, a horseshoe, magnet and noodle You all know the power of magnetism. If there was no magnetism applied to the needle it would not Jly to the magnet, but supply the iron with magnetism and the needle seeks its affinity and flies to the magnet Now, the lady is the magnet and the gentleman the needle If the lady has enough magnotlsm si can draw the gentlemon to her, but If she has not enousli of this power tho gentleman remains at a distance. The lady may bo able to draw a number different persons to her. but tho one sho wants stays away. Why? Because he having more magnetism than the lady, he cannot bo drawn toward her. Now, what is to be done? Give the lady more magnetism than the gentleman and then note the change. In a short time the gentleman will bo drawn toward her. and a union follows.
