ONE OF THE GEEATEST TICKETS EVEK PLACED IN THE FIELD

By Montgomery County Democracy—A Bis: Convention Characterized By Hairncny and Gccd Hnuicr.

ICarly Saturday morning creat crowds of people began to assemble around tho court house in anticipation of one of tlie liveliest conventions ever held by the democracy of Montgomery county. When the big court house bell announced the hour for the convening of the convention, every available spot in the court room and corriders was occu pied by some enthusiastic democrat eager for the fray.

Chairman Johnson called the convention to order aud Secretary Thompson read the roll call. On motion of M. E. Clodfelter^ committees on resolutions, organization and business, were chosen to meet at the temporary adjournment and report at 1:30 o'clock. sis

Hon. Claude Matthews, Secretary of State, was then introduced to the convention and delivered a short address, which was received with a great deal of enthusiasm. Cornelius Canine then moved that all parties who were candidates should parade themselves before the convention that the delegates could more intelligently vote in the afternoon. This raised a good natured laugh but the candidates were not forth-coming. Tho convention then adjourned to meet at 1:30 o'clock.

When the convention reassembled in the afternoon, standing room was way above par and many spectators were turned away.

The committee oh organization* reported that they had chosen JameB G. Johnson, of Mace, Chairman, and W. E. Henkel, of THE REVIEW, and Charles Bowers, Secretaries. On taking the chair, Mr. Johnson was greeted with a round of applause and in response the old patriarch made one of the most logical speeches ever heard in the court house. Ho referred to the billion dollar congress in a way that elicited wild cheers, and when he pointed to the pictures of Cleveland, Tliurman and Hendricks, which were suspended in a profusion of flags and bunting immediately above tho Judge's stand, tho building fairly shook under the strain of exultant yells.

The committee on resolutions then reported as follows: 1st. We, tho democrats assembled in convention this day. reaffirm the doctrine as declared by Jefferson and which have been the foundation upon which the democratic party has stood from its infancy, "Equal and exact justice to all, exclusive privileges to none." 2d. Resolved, That we are now as heretofore in favor of tariff reform, and most earnestly affirm that all taxation above that which is necessary to meet the current expenses of government economically administered is unjust taxation. 3d. Resolved further, That we aro in favor of such legislation as will place the laboring and poorer classes on an equality with all other classes, and as will fully protect them in tho product of their labor."

Tho report of the committee on business will beacon in the report below. Nominations for Prosecutor were then called for, and Wintiekl S. Moffett and Read Hanna were placed in nomination. The Secretary called the roll to the end of Coal Creek at which time Mr. Hanna had 38 votes and Mr. Molfott the remainder. Before the next township could be called Mr. Hanna arose aud withdrew his name and Moffett was nominated by acclamation.

A. N. Higgins, David McCallister, Jas. B. Elmore, Wm.McBee wore offered for representative. The vote stood, Iiiggins, r3 McCallister, G8 Elmore, 17 McBeo, 2!J.

James Elmore withdrew. Second ballot, McCallister, 89, Higgins, CI, McBee, 17. McCallister nominated 'and made a short speech. He is from Franklin township and one of the representative men of tho county.

For Clerk, Wallace Sparks and David Roach were placed in nomination. Only one ballot was necessary.Mr. Sparks receiving 99^ to Roach's

Gl'/i.

Mr.

Sparks then came forward aud thanked tho convention.

1

For Sheriff, John P. Bible was nominated by acclamation. John C. Hutton, of Union, and G. W. Utterback, of Coal Creek, were placed in nomination for Treasurer, but before a ballot was taken Mr. Utterback withdrew his name and Hutton was nominated by acclamation.

Four men were trotted out for the office of Recorder, J. F. Wren, Milt M^Kee, J. A. Clark and.I. M. Vance. The ballot resulted, Wren, ST McKee, 74 Clark, 3 Vance, 3. Mr. Wren was do clared the nominee and thanked his friends in a few chosen words for the honor.

For county Asscsssor threo names were presented, viz 'Sam Johnson,Union J. H. Robbing. Walnut, and Cornelius Canine, Brown township. Tho result of tho first ballot was Cannino 51, Johnson 55, Robbins 51.

Second ballot—Johnson Gl, Canine 57, Robbins 4(5. Third ballot—Robbins, 85, Johnson, 60 Canine, 32.

Fourth ballot—Robbins, 107 John54: Canine, G. Robbins nominatson ed.

Will Hunt had no opposition for Sur

veyor and was nominated with a whoop and hurrah. At this point Chairman Johnson announced that the convention had gotten down to the serious part of the business and advised them to be careful in their selection as he called for nomination for Coroner. Drs. Bronaugh,of Walnut Culver, of Wayne aud Bcatty, of Scott were placcd in nomination. After three townships had balloted Dr. Bronaugh withdrew his name and the vote resulted Culver, 84 Beatty, 52 Bronaugh, 31 Culver securing the necessary number was decliyod tho nominee.

The following resolution offered by O. W. Stingley was adopted: Resolved, that it is the sense of this convention that the delegates heretofore selected to attend tho state convention bo requested to cast'the vote of this county for the Hon. Claud Matthews for Governor.

After short speeches by Judge Smiley, of Greencastle, and Mike Foley, of Coal Creek, the convention adjourned.
